‎Ce nouveau volume du Corpus Nazianzenum est consacre a l'edition des versions syriaques des Discours 27, 38 et 39 de Gregoire de Nazianze. Dans la tradition grecque les Discours 38 et 39, dont le sujet est respectivement la Theophanie et la fete des Lumieres, forment un ensemble avec le Discours 40 (Sur le Bapteme) deja edite en syriaque dans le Corpus Nazianzenum. Le Discours 27, le premier des " Discours theologiques " (Or. 27-31) que Gregoire a ecrits a Constantinople vers 380, est dirige contre les disciples du redoutable champion arien que fut Eunome de Cyzique contre lequel Basile eut du reste aussi a lutter. Les autres discours theologiques seront edites dans un prochain volume. La tradition syriaque a conserve deux (Or. 27), voire trois (Or. 38 et 39) versions des discours gregoriens. La premiere version se rattache aux travaux de traduction que l'ecole d'Edesse a entrepris a partir du deuxieme quart du Ve siecle. Elle n'est plus representee que par un manuscrit date des environs de 700. La version moyenne a du etre realisee dans le courant du VIe s. ; elle aussi n'est connue, pour le discours 39, que par un seul manuscrit du VIIe s. La version recente est l'?uvre de Paul d'Edesse. On sait que c'est durant son exil a Chypre qu'il a entrepris cette revision en 623/624. Dans certains manuscrits, on decouvre encore les traces d'une revision ulterieure attribuee a Jacques d'Edesse. Ces trois versions n'ont cependant pas ete realisees independamment l'une de l'autre. Elles sont en effet le fruit d'une continuelle activite de revision : la version moyenne relit le texte de la version ancienne, et Paul d'Edesse beneficie du travail entrepris par ses devanciers. Celui qui s'intesesse aux techniques de traduction est donc a la fete dans le cas de Gregoire. Il dispose en effet de trois versions successives realisees a partir d'un texte grec quasiment identique (il y a bien quelques variantes) ; il peut ainsi etudier chacune des modifications du texte syriaque du point de vue lexicographique et syntaxique. ‎Les discours de Gregoire de Nazianze appartiennent aux chefs-d'? uvre de la litterature patristique grecque qui ont fait leur chemin dans la litterature des Syriens. Quarante-quatre discours de Gregoire ont ete successivement traduits et recenses en syriaque entre les Ve et VIIe siecles. La moitie d'entre eux se presente dans deux versions principales. L'une represente la version ancienne (fin du Ve siecle) ou moyenne (premiere moitie du VIe siecle) ; l'autre est une revision systematique sur la base des textes grecs et syriaques. Cette version recente date du debut du VIIe siecle et a pour auteur Paul, eveque d'Edesse, et d'autres scoliastes connus apres lui. L'existence de recensions differentes des discours comporte des avantages. Grace a son anciennete et a sa grande fidelite par rapport au grec, la tradition syriaque aide a reconstituer l'original grec des discours du Pere Cappadocien. Par ailleurs, sa portee pour l'histoire de la philologie syriaque est primordiale. Les recensions, effectuees au moment ou l'ecole hellenophile des Syriens etait a son apogee, permettent de reconnaitre l'evolution de la technique de traduction du grec en syriaque et l'elargissement du vocabulaire syriaque par la formation de nombreux neologismes. La presente edition syriaque en tient compte. Elle presente deux discours de Gregoire: le discours 13 (Sur l'ordination episcopale d'Eulalios de Doara) et le discours 41 (Sur la Pentecote), chacun dans ses deux versions (V/VIe et VIIe siecles) sur la base de plusieurs manuscrits. Les editions sont accompagnees d'apparats critiques et de notes qui detaillent les rapports avec l'original grec et les differences entre les deux versions syriaques qui sont separees dans le temps par 150 ans de developpement philologique et litteraire. ‎Die Mehrzahl der Bussbucher ist zwar im 19. Jahrhundert durch die Publikationen von Migne, Wasserschleben und Schmitz bekannt gemacht worden, aber ihre Editionen sind unzuverlassig, insbesondere weil die handschriftliche Uberlieferung unzureichend bekannt war und nicht alle bekannten Handschriften kollationiert worden sind. Die Editionen werden uberdies dem besonderen Charakter der Bussbucher als Gebrauchstexten nicht gerecht. Sie berucksichtigen namlich nicht dass der Text so, wie er uns in einer Handschrift heute vorliegt, fur die Praxis an einem Ort bestimmt war, dass jeder Textzeuge also einen 'Sitz im Leben' gehabt hat. Unterschiedliche Bussmasse in verschiedenen Handschrifte, etwa IV oder VI Jahre, konnen z. B. auf die Unachtsamkeit eines Schreibers zuruckgehen, sie konnen auch Ausdruck eines raumlich oder zeitlich bedingten Wandels in der Beurteilung einer Schuld sein. In jedem Fall sind die Angaben der jeweiligen Handschrift fur ihre Benutzer massgebend gewesen und haben evtl. weiteren Abschriften als Vorlage gedient. Aufgabe einer kritischen Edition der Bussbucher kann daher nicht die Prasentation eines auf Grund der Handschriftenkollation rekonstruierten Archetyps sein, der dem Originaltext moglichst nahekommt, demgegenuber Abweichungen (Varianten) in den Handschriften als Fehler gewertet und lediglich im textkritischen Apparat genannt werden. Die Edition der Bussbucher verlangt viel mehr, dass jede handschriftliche Uberlieferung eines Textes als grundsatzlich gleichwertig gilt, weil jede Zeugnis des Ortes oder Raumes ihrer Niederschrift oder ihres Uberlieferungszusammenhanges ist. Abgesehen von eindeutigen Schreibfehlern, die oft auch das Verstandnis erschweren, mussen die Texte deshalb moglichst als solche zur Geltung kommen. Demgemass ist fur die Neuedition der Bussbucher dann, wenn ein Text in mehreren Handschriften erhalten ist, eine von diesen als Leithandschrift gewahlt. Languages: Latin.‎

‎This edition brings together the narratives of three important 12th-century travellers to the newly established Crusader States in the Holy Land, one Anglo-Saxon: Saewulf, and two Germans: John of Wurzburg and Theoderic(us). All three narratives clearly convey the tremendous impression that these visits to the scene of Christ's wanderings on earth produced on our pilgrims. Apart from the independend value of their observations (mainly in Jerusalem, much less in Judea and Samaria), Saewulf is interesting for being the first to give a description of the situation in the Holy Land immediately after the capture of Jerusalem. His narrative reflects the often sorry state of affairs which prevailed at the end of the Fatimid period. ‎Written in 1159, the full text of Policraticus survives in over 60 manuscripts. This new critical edition is the first to examine all the surviving twelfth and thirteenth century manuscripts, as well as some later ones. The text is based on 11 manuscripts, ranging in date from c. 1160 to 1406. The detailed examination of the manuscripts and the manuscript tradition in the Introduction isolates two authorial versions of the text. Both versions were recorded in London BL Royal 13 D IV, the earliest and most authoritative of the extants manuscripts. This manuscript was used by the last editor, C.C.J. Webb, for his 1909 edition, but his preference for MS Corpus Christi College, Cambridge 48 meant that in effect he printed the earlier version of the text. The evidence of Royal 13 D IV suggests that Salisbury revised the text to produce his second version before he went into exile in 1166. The evidence of two later manuscripts indicates that a major revision of the text, constituting a non-authorial third version, originated in Italian jurist circles in the mid-fourteenth century. The manuscript tradition bears comparison with that of Salisbury's other major work, Metalogicon (the subject of a recent exhaustive study by Dr Keats-Rohan), which has been revealed as the key to Policraticus by P. von Moos and others. The readings of the four previous editions have been added to those of the MSS in the apparatus criticus, in order to produce a full account of the textual transmission of the work. The new edition adopts C.C.J. Webb's acclaimed apparatus fontium in extenso, though the opportunity has been taken to revise and to augment it, based on the publications of recent years as well as archive work. In addition, quite apart from reference to John's sources, Webb's app. font. contains much information about the way that Policraticus was used by later writers. Languages: Latin.‎

‎Composed between the years 1267 and 1275 by the Dominican and Parisian Master, William of Luxi, Postilla super Baruch and Postilla super Ionam were produced to provide ideal material for equipping preachers with accessible sermon material. The commentaries, doctrinally informed and containing exempla, distictiones and advice for the confessional, assisted in bridging the gap between scriptural exegesis and its practical and pastoral application to preaching. Although little is known about William, he was considered to be an exegete of some repute. In a list compiled by one medieval source proposing the best biblical commentaries, William's postill on the Twelve Minor Prophets (Postilla super Ionam) is as highly esteemed as commentaries by Hugh of St. Cher, Thomas Aquinas, and Nicholas of Lyra. His commentary on the Book of Baruch (Postilla super Baruch) holds an important place within the commentary tradition of that book in the Latin West, since it is a valuable witness to the only two surviving Latin commentaries on it: the Dean of Salisbury's Glossa super Baruch (ante 1230) and Hugh of St. Cher's Postilla super Baruch (ca. 1230-1235). William's commentaries contribute to our understanding of the history of the formal shaping of scholastic exegesis and its contribution to the broader pastoral reform movement unfolding throughout the thirteenth century. Set side by side with university sermons, Sentence commentaries and disputations, they also give the modern scholar a more balanced view of the thought of teachers and students during this remarkable period of theological activity. ‎The Psuedo-Nonnos Commentaries on Sermons IV, V, XXXIX and XLIII by Gregory of Nanzianos collect and explain most of the references to Hellenic learning and mythology made therein. They reflect the views (and level of education) of a tolerant but committed Eastern Christian of the early sixth century A.D., and excited much interest, both in the Byzantine world, and, after they were printed, in the West. Later commentators and scholiasts on St. Gregory made much use of the work, as did other writers and compilers of encyclopaedias. The edition is based upon an investigation of almost all of the 150 known manuscripts, and provides a text which is largely supported by the Syriac and Armenian versions. These are of early date. Recent collations of their texts are included in the apparatus criticus. The Introduction defines the relationship between the versions and the Greek text, the latter's recensions and the history of its tradition, with detailed stemmata. It surveys and updates previous and contemporary studies through the extent of the evidence at its disposal and the generous help of others. ‎The Anjou Bible, now kept in the Theology Faculty's Maurits Sabbe Library of the University of Leuven (Belgium) is a superbly illuminated manuscript created at the Royal Court of Naples in the turbulent fourteenth century. At this time much of Central and Southern Europe was governed by the successful dynasty of Anjou, which continued to expand its territories and encouraged artists and writers like Giotto, Simone Martini, Boccaccio and Petrarch. In 1328, after the death of her father, Joanna of Anjou became the official heir to the prosperous Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Several years later her grandfather, Robert I, gave Joanna and her young fiance Andrew of Hungary a precious gift, which became known as the Anjou Bible, a manuscript that is priceless from a historical and art-historical point of view. In addition to Bible texts and splendid miniatures, it contains a wealth of historical information about the house of Anjou and the book's origins. One of the artists responsible for the magnificent painting was Cristophorus Orimina, the leading illuminator in Naples, who signed the work. The Anjou Bible has now been carefully conserved and studied: the research findings are brought together in this book. Essays by some of the most noted experts in the field describe how the arts were promoted at the court of Robert I of Anjou and also shed light on the Bible's genesis and on all the research methods and results. ‎Rubens studied his own artistic heritage. In his early youth he copied German illustrated books, such as Holbein's Dance of Death, Tobias Stimmer's Bible (1576), Jost Amman's Flavius Josephus (1580) and the immensely popular Petrarch edition with woodcuts attributed to Hans Weiditz (1532). He also made drawings after engravings by Hendrick Goltzius (1596-97) and Johannes Stradanus (1589). These copies fall into Rubens?s youth or the years immediately following his return to Antwerp. In later years, he occasionally copied from the paintings of his predecessors and compatriots, but he preferred to retain their compositions and designs by collecting and retouching their works. He reworked drawings by German masters such as Hans Holbein the Younger, Hans Suss von Kulmbach and several artists from the school of Durer. Sheets of Netherlandish masters were retouched by Rubens: Cornelis Bos, Bernard van Orley, Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Michiel Coxcie, Aertgen and Lucas van Leyden, Jan Swart van Groningen and Marten van Heemskerck. He also painted copies from works by artists such as Hans Holbein, Quinten Massys, Willem Key, Joos van Cleve, Jan Vermeyen and Adam Elsheimer. Although no direct copies by Rubens after Pieter Bruegel the Elder are known, his late landscapes and genre scenes betray a profound influence from this great Flemish predecessor. He owned a number of drawings and paintings of peasant festivities with their accompanying scenes of drunkenness and brawls. It is in this category of works that we encounter all but one of the surviving Northern paintings retouched by Rubens. Among the Netherlandish paintings retouched by Rubens listed in seventeenth-century Antwerp inventories but no longer identifiable, at least one is also of a low-life subject: a Brothel Scene, possibly by Marten van Cleve.‎

‎Alors que le Nouveau Testament ne fait que mentionner le nom de l'apotre Barthelemy, une tradition ancienne a vu en lui le depositaire de certains mysteres, relatifs a la descente aux enfers et a la resurrection de Jesus. Les deux ecrits apocryphes qui sont reunis ici, les Questions de Barthelemy et le Livre copte de la Resurrection, se rattachent a cette tradition. Publies pour la premiere fois en traduction francaise, ils permettent de decouvrir des aspects mal connus du christianisme des premiers siecles. Jean-Daniel Kaestli est professeur a la Faculte de theologie et directeur de l'Institut des sciences bibliques de l'Universite de Lausanne. Il a publie, avec Eric Junod, l'edition critique et le commentaire des Actes apocryphes de Jean. Depuis 1987, il est president de l'Association pour l'etude de la litterature apocryphe chretienne (AELAC). Pierre Cherix, privat-docent a la Faculte de theologie de l'Universite de Lausanne, est un specialiste de la langue copte. Il collabore a la publication de la concordance des ecrits de Nag Hammadi et a prepare l'edition de textes apocryphes coptes, notamment des Actes de Paul. Nouveau.‎
