‎Manuscripts of the 'Evangelium Nicodemi', A Census.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1994 Hardcover. 292 p., 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9780888443700.‎

‎The so-called Evangelium Nicodmi (EN), a fifth-century apocryphal passion narrative, showed remarkable vitality throughout the Middle Ages and by the close of the period established itself as one of the most influential religious texts, its authority approaching - though not often attaining - that of the canonical gospels. The importance of the EN for the religious culture of the Middle Ages has long been recognized, yet its scope and vicissitudes, its gradual evolution and transmission, have occasioned but a few tentative explorations. The reason for this paucity of detailed studies and for the continued absence of a comprehensive edition of the EN lies in the circumstances that make them all the more desirable - the apocryphon's enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and, as a natural corollary, the daunting abundance of extant manuscripts. Manuscripts of the Evangelium Nicodemi offers the first comprehensive listing of all known Latin manuscripts of the apocryphon. Descriptions of individual manuscripts provide information about the coodices (writing material, number of folios, size, date, place of origin, scribes, owners, contents) and about the texts those codices contain (incipits and explicit of the texts that make up the Evangelium). A series of five analytical and interpretative indexes serves as a guide to the composition of the Evangelium and its satellites, to the chronology of the manuscripts, to their contents, and to persons and places connected with them. The information gathered in this volume may be of assistance in studying the sources of vernacular translations of the Evangelium, patterns of its ownership and readership, medieval attitudes towards it, and the dynamics of its textual evolution; in investigating scribal practices of selection and compilation; and in identifying manuscripts of other apocrypha.‎

‎Life of Christ before the Passion The Youth of Christ - 2 volumes SET‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2015 Hardback with dusjackets Languages: English 2 volumes set; , approx. 560 p., 95 b/w ill. + 120 colour ill., 180 x 265 mm Fine copy. ISBN 9781872501710.‎

‎The paintings that Rubens devoted to the theme of the youth of Christ are among the most impressive and influential examples of art that expressed Roman Catholic spirituality as reasserted at the Council of Trent. The vast majority of these works are his numerous images of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The oldest sources for these and other scenes from Christ's youth are of course the accounts of the Gospels, but these were usefully completed by several supplementary descriptions, more especially the Apocrypha, patristic literature, and the pious legends woven around the birth of Christ in the course of the Middle Ages. In his interpretations of the scenes from Christ's youth, Rubens built to a large extent on a pictorial tradition that had developed in the Low Countries and Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which mediaeval views and patterns originating from Northern Europe had merged with those of the Italian Renaissance. In Rubens's representations of scenes from Christ's youth, and especially in his many interpretations of the themes of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, the ideas of Counter-Reformation iconography found their most explicit embodiment in the clear Eucharistic connotations that are present in these works.‎

‎Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo . Mélanges en l?honneur de Gilbert Dahan‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 472 pages, Size:160 x 245 mm, Illustrations:7 b/w, 5 tables b/w., Language: French. ISBN 9782851213303.‎

‎Summary Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, « Thy word have I hid in mine heart » (Ps 119, 11). Under this title, colleagues, disciples and friends of Gilbert Dahan have decided, on the initiative and under the direction of Annie Noblesse, to address him a collection of Mélanges in homage to his scientific work and the profound renewal he has brought to various fields of research: the phenomenology of medieval liturgical games, relations between Jewish intellectuals and Christians in the Middle Ages, and medieval Christian exegesis. Based on his interest in medieval exegesis, its history and reception, they offer twenty-one contributions, classified under five headings: elucidating, glossing and commenting, interpreting, conferring and preaching. A study of the musical setting of Ps 101 by Pierre César Abeille (1674-1733), whose works appeared in a manuscript of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, also pays tribute to the musician and music lover to whom this book is dedicated. The volume also includes a list of Gilbert Dahan's works and publications. Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, « J'ai ton parler reserré en mon cueur » (Ps 119, 11).

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 191 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503596785.‎

‎Summary The Liber de ordine creaturarum is an anonymous Latin work with an Irish provenance that dates back to the seventh century. It presents the creation as the divine handiwork and is notable for serving as both a commentary on the Hexaemeron (Six-day Work) in Genesis and as one of the earliest works of systematic theology. Although previously attributed to Isidore of Seville, the Liber de ordine creaturarum is far more than a mere compilation of 'authorities.' Instead, it emphasizes the inherent order that exists within the creation itself. ‎Repertorio di letteratura biblica in italiano a stampa (Ca 1462-1650)‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 637 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503584058.‎

‎Summary This catalogue collects Italian biblical works issued from the beginning of print to the middle of the 17th century. The abundant literature had multiple uses: the transmission of the sacred text, its interpretation, preaching, religious education, and devotional uses (meditation and prayer). It was also used as a foundation of learning and general knowledge, ethics, professional practices (i.e. in medecine and politics), domestic piety and everyday life, as well as literary and theatrical entertainment. This catalogue will help to reconstruct the access to the Bible by Italian lay people. It contributes to the historiographical debate on how Italians could read the Bible after the ban of biblical translations. It represents an extremely rich source of information for future research about authorship, readership and the very nature and use of this production, shedding light on forgotten bestsellers of Italian Renaissance.‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 349 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503609898.‎

‎Summary The rich literary production of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries AD has received quite some attention in recent scholarship. Yet, the figure and work of Procopius the Sophist, as author of catenae, compiler, and epitomist of patristic exegesis, have remained relatively unknown and under-explored. This collection of essays delves deeply into Procopius' exegetical work. At the outset, a strong case is made that one should distinguish between the famous orator of Gaza and "the Christian sophist" Procopius. A first large section of the book deals with the Genesis Epitome that is studied from three different angles: the limited and as a rule critical use of Origen and his tradition; the importance given to Theodore of Mopsuestia's exegesis of Gen 1-3; and the relations between Procopius' Epitome and John Philoponus' De opificio mundi. The section on the Exodus Epitome studies the specificity of Procopius' work in comparison to the Catena on Exodus, the way the material is organised, and the literary genre of the work. The volume further contains contributions on the connections between the Scholia on Kings attributed to Procopius, the type B catena, and the so-called "Catena Lipsiensis"; the relations between Procopius' Catena on Proverbs and other catenae on this book; the sources of the Isaiah Epitome that show a diligent and able compiler at work; and the comparison between the characteristic features of Procopius' Epitomes and those of the Catena III on Obadiah. As a whole, it offers a wide perspective and significantly advances research on, and our knowledge of, Procopius the Christian sophist, a still somewhat mysterious early Byzantine author and scholar. ‎Andrew of Saint Victor, Commentary on Isaiah‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 492 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin, Hebrew. ISBN 9782503605050.‎

‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, founded in 1108, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "according to the Hebrew." This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. The source text of this volume was published in 2021 by Frans van Liere (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis, 53C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Summary This volume explores the reception of biblical figures in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with a particular focus on Antiquity and incursions in the Middle Ages and modernity. The contributions included here offer a glimpse of the complexity of the mechanics of transmission to which these figures were subjected in extra-biblical texts, either concentrating on one author or corpus in particular, or broadening the scope across time and cultural contexts. The volume intends to shed light on how these biblical figures and their legacies appear as channels of collective memory and identity; how they became tools for authors to achieve specific goals; how they gained new and powerful authority for communities; and how they transcend traditions and cultural boundaries. As a result, the vitality and fluidity of the developments of traditions become clear and prompt caution when using modern categories. ‎Sacred Texts & Sacred Figures: The Reception and Use of Inherited Traditions in Early Christian Literature. A Festschrift in Honor of Edmondo F. Lupieri‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 386 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 1 col., 2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, French, German. ISBN 9782503599182.‎

‎Summary In tribute to the scholarly legacy of Edmondo F. Lupieri, in Sacred Texts & Sacred Figures an international group of esteemed biblical scholars offer essays on the ways religious traditions, texts, and even the legacies of notable figures were received, re-interpreted, and used by the authors of gospels, epistles, and apocalypses to address the ever-evolving circumstances of emerging Christianity. In the first and second centuries CE, oral and written traditions about the life of Jesus proliferated and formed the basis for written narratives. The authors of the gospels received and redacted those traditions to make distinctive theological claims about Jesus and to address their specific milieu and the wider movement of Jesus-followers. Among some groups of Jesus-followers the sacred texts of Judaism remained paramount. Authors like that of the Epistle to the Hebrews re-examined their inheritance of Jewish scriptures in order to demonstrate the continuity of their novel claims about Jesus with the sacred texts and traditions of Judaism. Similarly, the authors of first- and second-century apocalypses drew on the heritage of Jewish apocalypticism to write and record new revelations of and about Jesus. In addition to traditions and texts, authors in the first and second centuries re-examined the legacy of significant Jewish figures and followers of Jesus and wrote about them in the context of their own contemporary circumstances. Using innovative strategies and written in an engaging style, the essays assembled here explore the reception and reinterpretation of sacred traditions, texts, and figures in the writings of early Christianity. ‎À l'origine des femmes martyres. La mère de 2 Maccabées 7‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 308 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):French, Greek, Hebrew. ISBN 9782503594798.‎

TABLE OF CONTENTS Remerciements Abréviations Introduction Chapitre I. ‎Summary La principale entreprise exégétique de Jérôme est un commentaire des prophètes, qui est resté sans concurrence en Occident pendant plusieurs siècles.

‎Spiritual Formation and Mystical Symbolism. A Selection of Works of Hugh and Richard of St Victor, and of Thomas Gallus‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 625 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503553115.‎

‎Summary Biblical interpretation, writings on the contemplative/mystical life and a continuing deep reflection on the nature and meaning of symbols come together in powerful ways in Victorine writers, particularly Hugh and Richard, as well as the lesser-known writer Thomas Gallus (Thomas of Vercelli), a Victorine canon who became the abbot of a house of regular canons in Vercelli, Italy. This volume contains: (1) Hugh's On the Ark of Noah and A Short Treatise on the Form of the Ark, treatises that unfold Hugh's teaching on stages and fruition of the mystical quest in relation to a complex drawing that incorporates a figure of Christ seated in majesty, embracing a map of the world on which is superimposed a diagram of Noah's Ark, representing the 12 stages of the contemplative quest; (2) Richard's On the Ark of Moses, a work that uses the symbolic (allegorical and tropological) interpretation of the Ark of the Covenant and the figures of the Cherubim that accompany the Ark in the Jerusalem Temple to convey Richard's vivid and compelling teaching on the varieties of contemplative experience as he understood them in twelfth-century Paris; and (3) Thomas Gallus' Commentary on the Song of Songs, which offers a window into a formative period of transition in the western Christian spiritual tradition, with Gallus's commentary on the Song of Songs giving voice to a more ?affective? (versus ?speculative?) understanding of the mystical quest and experience, drawing upon and extending earlier Victorine explorations of the interrelationship of love and knowing in the experience of contemplation. For those interested in the dynamics of the spiritual quest and symbolic understanding in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, as well as insights that can inform the modern quest for knowledge and love of God, these are essential works for any library.‎

‎Summary This volume collects contributions from the international conference Biblia regum. IV-XIII) held at the University of L'Aquila, 16-17 April 2018. The collection sheds a new light on the relation between the Bible and royal authority in the late antique and medieval West. By focussing both on the use of biblical quotations and on distinct features of biblical manuscripts - such as dedications, comments, translations and illustrations - contributors investigate how the Bible functioned as a behavioural model to which rulers and their subjects should conform, as well as a text that supported royal power. Collectively, the contributions address significant aspects of the layered interconnection between royal power and the Holy Writ, and lead to a fruitful dialogue between different fields of research. ‎Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Judges. A Critical Edition (BL Royal 1 C III)‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 169 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503600116.‎

‎Summary A silver-tongued assassin, a motherly prophetess, a consecrated strongman unable to resist the charms of foreign women: the Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Judges features a roll-call of unlikely heroes. At the book's core is a cycle of saviour stories. Twelve times the Israelites embrace foreign gods, succumb to neighbouring enemies, repent and are delivered by a 'judge'. As Israel itself descends into ever-greater religious, moral and political decay, the narrative pattern also unravels. The book ends bleakly, with stories of rape, murder and civil war. The stage is set for a king. Gideon?a doubting Thomas who repeatedly 'tests' God?and Samson?lion-killer and lover of Delilah?were firm medieval favourites. Their tales and those of other flawed judges inspired heroic deeds on the battlefield and provided lessons on how to behave (and indeed how not to behave). With its remarkable heroines, moreover?from cut-throat Jael, who wields a tent-peg to devastating effect, to Jephthah's dignified daughter, sacrificed because of her father's rash vow?this is a book that prompted much reflection in the Middle Ages on the place of women in society. The Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Judges survives in two fourteenth-century manuscripts: British Library Royal MS 1 C III (L), noted for its multilingual glosses, and the richly illustrated Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fonds français 1 (P). The critical text, based on L, has been prepared by Pitts. An introduction and notes by Grange aim to elucidate and interpret the Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Judges for the modern reader. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 420 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, Language(s):Latin, French. ISBN 9782503610030.‎

TABLE OF CONTENTS Préface de Gilbert Dahan Introduction Texte latin et traduction‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 316 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language(s):Latin, French. ISBN 9782503614649.‎

‎Summary For many years, the Septuagint of Ruth (LXX-Ruth) has been considered a literal translation. Several authors have emphasized the similarities between the Greek text and the Masoretic Text, while others have also noted the divergences. In the wake of this second stream, this book seeks to answer the crucial question: How can we nuance the definition of ?literalism? for LXX-Ruth, and which innovations and specifics can be detected in this text? A fresh analysis of the Greek rendering of the Hebrew proper names, toponyms, hapax legomena as well as legal aspects makes it possible to develop new perspectives on the translation technique of LXX-Ruth and to highlight several characteristics of this text. This volume, moreover, extends the discussion by including the analysis of the theological accents of LXX-Ruth and an up-to-date presentation of its textual history including the fragments of the book in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Overall, this volume enhances our understanding of the linguistic and literary background of the LXX, as well as its specific features. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 443 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503583822.‎

‎Summary John Wyclif (d. 1384), famous Oxford philosopher-theologian and controversialist, was posthumously condemned as a heretic at the Council of Constance in 1415. Wyclif's influence was pan-European and had a particular impact on Prague, where Jan Hus, from Charles University, was his avowed disciple and the leader of a dissident reformist movement. Hus, condemned to the stake at Constance, gathered around him a prolific circle of disciples who changed the landscape of late medieval religion and literature in Bohemia, just as Wyclif's own followers had done in England. Both thinkers, and the movements associated with them, played a crucial role in the transformation of later medieval European thought, in particular through a radically enlarged role of textual production in the vernaculars (especially Middle English and Old Czech), as well as in Latin, in the philosophical, theological, and ecclesiological realms. This interdisciplinary volume of essays brings together cutting-edge research from scholars working in these and contiguous fields and asks fundamental questions about the methods that informed Wycliffite and Hussite writings and those by their interlocutors and opponents. Viewing these debates through a methodological lens enables a reassessment of the impact that they had, and the responses they elicited, across a range of European cultures, from England in the west via France and Austria to Bohemia in the east. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 276 pages, Size:148 x 210 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language: French. ISBN 9782503596983.‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 726 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503593937.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter was a master at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in the late 12th century. Among his many works is The Abel Distinctions, an alphabetized collection that treats key words by 'distinguishing' their various symbolic meanings in accordance with the traditions of biblical exegesis. The work was innovative in form and deeply conservative in content. Of special use to preachers who would shape a sermon around such sets of distinctions, it also appealed in general to clerics and laity interested in biblical meaning and allegory. The Abel Distinctions may have been the first collection of its kind; it spawned dozens of imitators through the next two centuries and more. Its immense popularity and influence is indicated by its nearly ninety extant manuscripts. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Petrus Cantor, Distinctiones Abel (CC CM, 288-288A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.‎

‎Summary For manuscript historians, the Bible in the form of a codex represents a handcrafted object of the utmost importance: it was the sacred text par excellence and served as a vital reference point in the lives of medieval monks. In addition, it functioned as an indispensable tool for daily liturgical celebration, and as a study text and individual reading book for the purpose of moral edification. The manuscript collection of the Montecassino Abbey presents an exemplary case study, both for the total number of biblical manuscripts it preserves (just under a hundred, and for the diversity of types (complete 'monolithic' Bibles, Old and/or New Testament sequences of varying size and physiognomy, and individual glossed books with commentary beside the text), as well as for the presence of a significant group of codices in Beneventan minuscule produced for internal use within the same Abbey or in its dependencies in a period centered around the eleventh century (with sporadic extensions into the twelfth and thirteenth). The present catalogue aims to deepen our current knowledge of the presence, transmission and reception of the Bible in one of the most important and emblematic medieval Benedictine monasteries. ‎Summary This volume, the first in the new series Transcultural Medieval Studies, draws together scholars from around the world to offer new insights into the importance and role of the Bible across the varied cultures of medieval Europe. The papers gathered here take a comparative and multidisciplinary approach to the subject, focusing on the biblical background of perceptions of the religious and cultural 'Self ' and 'Other' in the Mediterranean, in Latin Europe, and in the Baltic. In doing so, the contributions identify commonalities and differences of the 'uses of the Bible' in these various worlds, combining and contrasting studies on Bible manuscripts, their exegesis, and their use for historical writing. ‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "secundum Hebraeos." Scholars have seen Andrew of St Victor as standing at the cradle of a scholarly interest in the Biblical text, which influenced scholars such as the fourteenth-century Franciscan Nicholas of Lyra, and, in the long run, reformers such as John Wycliff, Martin Luther, and John Calvin.‎

‎Nouveau Testament d'Érasme (1516). Regards sur l'Europe des humanistes‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, xx + 370 pages, Size:150 x 250 mm, Illustrations:19 col., 7 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Languages: French, English. ISBN 9782503593852.‎

‎The Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Joshua. A Critical Edition (BL Royal 1 C III)‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 208 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, Languages: English, Middle English. ISBN 9782503591339.‎

‎Summary The Anglo-Norman Bible's Joshua includes tales of spies, giants, the prostitute Rahab, the punishment of Achan, oracles, and Joshua's brilliant military victories. Joshua stops the sun. The first half of the book relates Joshua's stunning conquests in Canaan. The second half, the apportionment of the land among the tribes, detailed geographical surveys of territorial boundaries, and the death of Joshua. Skilful, well-paced story telling is a feature of the ANB's Joshua. To the accounts of Rahab and Achan we may add the chronicle of Joshua's successful, crushing campaign in the wake of the destruction of Makkedah. In rapid succession, and in an annalistic style involving staccato repetition of key phrases, the narrator relates the destruction of Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. The text of the ANB's Joshua is extant in British Library Royal 1 C III (base manuscript, L) and Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS français 1 (P), both c. 1350 and both the Bibles of kings. L belonged at some point in the fifteenth century to Reading's Benedictine abbey, entering the royal library in 1530. Characteristic of L is its occasional insertion of short glosses in English or Latin to clarify or correct the Anglo-Norman text. An illustrated text, P was prepared by an English workshop for the fourth baron de Welles, John, and his wife, Maud, daughter of William, Lord Ros. This is clearly the Bible of a wealthy and well-connected English family. After the Welles family, the manuscript belonged to Louis de Bruges (? 1492), then to King Louis XII of France. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 221 pages, Size:148 x 210 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, Language: French. ISBN 9782503588957.‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 383 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503591032.‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 336 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 8 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503612812.‎

‎Summary Hildebert of Lavardin is one of the great poets of the Middle Ages, praised for his elegant style by his contemporaries and by modern scholars alike. He occupies a seminal position in the revival of learning in the late Middle Ages known as the Twelfth Century Renaissance, and his mastery of classical Latin style was so refined that some of his works were long considered products of Antiquity. This collection of Hildebert's biblical epigrams and short poems introduces English-speaking readers to the best works of this neglected poet and places them in the context of his life and literary career. The translations attempt to bring the reader as close as possible to experiencing these poems in their original Latin while still being readable and comprehensible, facilitated by notes and commentary. Hildebert's poetry is sometimes challenging, dense and complicated, yet his rhetoric is often beautiful, even magnificent. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 419 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Languages: Latin, French. ISBN 9782503591162.‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 550 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:4 col., Languages: Latin, English. ISBN 9782503578057.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter's Distinctiones Abel displays the multiple senses of some eleven hundred biblical terms and arranges the terms in alphabetical order. Preserved in nearly ninety manuscript copies, it stands at the head of a series of similar aids for preachers and students of the Bible. Its immediate context is the practice of "distinguishing" the senses of terms in a biblical text as the backbone of a sermon, a novel practice employed by several masters of the late twelfth century, notably by Peter's colleague in Paris, Peter Comestor. The Distinctiones Abel was compiled in an age of organization and may be compared with such searchable reference works as Gratian's Decretum, the Glosa Ordinaria, the new Latin dictionaries, and Peter Lombard's Sentences. It is among the first scholarly works to use the alphabet as a technique of information retrieval. Only selections of the work have been printed before; this editio princeps will be of interest to intellectual historians and those interested in medieval biblical studies, homiletics, popular imagery, and allegory. The Introduction itself is a major work of scholarship in a new field. It includes a brief account of Peter the Chanter's life and work, a survey of the genre 'distinctiones,' an extensive desciption of the manuscripts, many of them treated in print for the first time, along with a thorough exposition of the sophisticated methodology of textual criticism employed.‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 223 pages, Size:148 x 210 mm, Languages: French, Italian, English. ISBN 9782503581767.‎

‎, Brepols - Institut d'Etudes Augustiniennes, 2019 Hardback, 744 pages, Size:115 x 165 mm, Languages: French, Latin. ISBN 9782851212986.‎

‎Summary Les volumes 57 et suivants de la Bibliothèque Augustinienne, fruit du travail commun de plusieurs spécialistes d'Augustin (I. Bochet, A.-I. Bouton-Touboulic, M. Dulaey, P.-M. ‎All Roads Lead to Rome. The Creation, Context & Transmission of the Codex Amiatinus‎

‎Summary The Codex Amiatinus is perhaps the most famous copy of the Bible surviving in Western Europe. A fascinating and elusive manuscript, with a suite of decorated folios, it was made in Anglo-Saxon England around the turn of the eighth century at the twin monastic foundation of Wearmouth and Jarrow as one of three such 'pandects'. Created at the monastic foundation celebrated in the work of the Venerable Bede, this vast and luxe manuscript was sent by the Northumbrian monks as a gift to the Pope in 716 and, after a sojourn of some 900 years at Monte Amiato (Tuscany), it was donated to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence in the eighteenth century. As a result of an international conference held to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the departure of the manuscript from Northumberland and coinciding with the production and presentation of a facsimile of the Codex to the Museum at Jarrow, this volume - the first devoted to the Codex Amiatinus - brings together twelve essays that offer a new appraisal of this remarkable book, and of the contexts that surrounded its production. Encompassing its text, its images, its social, political and ecclesiastical contexts and its later medieval legacy, the contributions to this volume highlight several previously unrecognised aspects and details of the manuscript that further our understanding of the Codex as a book, and as inheritor and progenitor of manuscript traditions in its own right. Leggere, interpretare, riscrivere‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 299 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:12 b/w, 3 col., Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503584065.‎

‎Origins of Christianity in the Calendar Wars of the Second Century BCE‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, 325 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language: English. *new ISBN 9782503613062.‎

‎Summary In the Gospels Jesus is called a 'Nazarene' or 'Nazoraean'. Does this mean he came from Nazareth? Basing himself on Lidzbarski's analysis of the Hebrew/Aramaic origins of the Greek terms Nazarênos and Nazôraios Dr Osborne proposes that these epithets indicate that Jesus was a nô?rî, a '(Strict) Keeper/Guardian (of the Law)'. This meant he was a follower of the 364-day liturgical calendar known to us from 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and Qumran. An examination of the passages where these terms appear shows that this hypothesis leads to a deeper understanding of the circumstances in which the first Christian communities arose and clarifies greatly the background of Jesus' crucifixion as Y??û ha-Nô?rî. The book then traces the influence of the nô?rîm on the history of Israel from their origin in the 'calendar wars' that tore apart the Jewish nation from 172-163 BCE. These broke out after the lunisolar calendar was introduced into the temple liturgy by Menelaus the high priest, and only came to an end when the 364-day calendar was reintroduced under his successor, Alcimus. In 151 BCE, however, Jonathan Maccabaeus was appointed high priest and reintroduced the lunisolar calendar. The nô?rîm were suppressed and forced to emigrate or go underground. They reappear as leaders of Jewish resistance to Roman occupation after Pompey incorporated Judaea into the empire in 63 BCE. Eventually they became the chief instigators of the revolt against Rome that led to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. Osborne argues that the nô?rîm thought to have been included in the Twelfth Benediction of the Amidah at Yavneh around 90 CE are these same '(Strict) Keepers/Guardians (of the Law)'. ‎, brepols, 2025 hardcover, 585 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:8 colour plates, Language(s):English. *New. ISBN 9780888442345.‎

‎The Antwerp Polyglot Bible (1568?1573) has long been recognized as one of the most ambitious typographical enterprises of the sixteenth century. Upon completion, it was the most elaborate Bible ever printed, a library of biblical erudition with editions of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, and Latin versions together with new scholarly instruments necessary to study and compare them. Yet powerful contemporaries also perceived it as a threat to the Church. The very idea of a polyglot Bible, especially one that included the Hebrew Bible and Aramaic Targums of Jewish tradition, ran counter to the Council of Trent?s decree that the Latin Vulgate was the only authentic version of Christian Scripture. In the middle of the sixteenth century, biblical philology and Catholic orthodoxy turned onto a frightful course of collision, and the pages of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible formed the force field at their crossroads. The Multiplicity of Scripture is the first book-length study of how the Antwerp Polyglot was made. Combining the history of the book with the history of scholarship and drawing on primary sources from archives and libraries across Europe, it reconstructs the editorial history of Christopher Plantin?s masterpiece from within his printing shop. Set in the contexts of fierce biblical controversies in Tridentine Europe and the fraught afterlife of Jewish traditions in post-expulsion Spain, it tells a story of crisis and craftsmanship, of ink-stained proofs in four different alphabets and the extraordinary team of scholars and printers that made this monument of Renaissance printing and scholarly endeavour.‎

‎Johann Buxtorf was a Hebrew scholar of prodigious energy and learning who believed that Christian scholars must master not only the Hebrew Bible but also the entire range of Jewish writing. He surveyed a vast corpus of Jewish texts and used them to describe the customs and ceremonies of Ashkenazic Jews. Working as an editor and a censor, he strove ? not always successfully ? to produce editions of the Hebrew Bible and prayerbook that contained the best of Jewish learning but were purified of anti-Christian sentiments. This book uses unpublished sources of many kinds, from Buxtorf?s marginal notes in his Jewish books to letters to him in Hebrew from Jewish print professionals, to tell his story.
