‎A COMPENDIOUS VIEW OF NATURAL AND REVEALED RELIGION IN SEVEN BOOKS.‎

‎pp. xxiv, 650 + 3 p. Publisher's advertisement, including a Proposal to publish the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Old foxing and age stain. 8vo. Contemporary full leather binding, worn. Boards almost detached. FIRST EDITION. A note to a modern reprint of this important and scarce indicates the regard in which he is still held: John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington, was a leading Scottish minister in the early eighteenth-century. He was a gifted preacher, and prolific writer of theology. He began life in obscure poverty, without advantage of wealth, position, title, or education. He taught himself Greek while working in the fields. He became a man of deep spiritual experience with skill in preaching the doctrines of free grace and piety. This Compendious View, is based on his seminary lectures. It contains more than 26,000 proof texts and numerous exegetical insights. This single volume of Reformed systematic theology is rich in content and an indispensable tool for students, pastors, and professors of theology. "Eighteenth Century Scotland produced many noted ministers, scholars and educators, but none greater, or so greatly loved in his own day or afterwards, as John Brown of Haddington" - Joel R. Beeke. Though the Library of Congress apparently once held this First Edition, OCLC does not record any other U.S. library as having it. This original edition is very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151‎

Double column throughout. Marbled endpapers. Slight margin loss on in sig A of Book of Common Prayer. Mild damp stain last few signatures of The Whole Book of Psalms. Hardbound. In 1789 the American Episcopal church adopted its first version of the Book of Common Prayer, which was used from 1790 until a major revision was completed in 1892. During this time, several editions of the Book of Common Prayer were published with corrections and other minor changes, of which this 1793 edition was the first. No priority has been established for the several 1793 Gaine varieties and variants. Because of format differences with those found in the record, we think that this is an unrecorded variant (closely allied to: Evans/Shipton & Mooney 26043; Griffiths 1793:11). The text follows the 1707 edition by John Mill (1645-1707), with seven variations. This quarto edition was limited to 500 copies, and is much scarcer than the 8vo edition issued around the same time. Gaskell - Add. 1; Darlow & Moule 4755. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he became printer to Cambridge University. There he designed other fonts, including his remarkable Greek type. All of his books bear the marks of fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design.**PRICE JUST REDUCED! RARE. SAFE ADD 1‎

Imgleichen: eine kurz gefasste biblische geschichte und lebenbeschreibung doctor Martin Luthers.‎

‎pp. (5) [Subscribers List], 100, 13, 738, 227, 92 + 2 Frontis plates engraved by John Henry. Plates and title page foxed as usual. The double column fraktur letter German text includes a brief biography of Luther; as well as advice on how to read Scripture by the famous Pietist August Herman Franke (1663-1727). Folio. 398 mm. Original full leather over beveled oak boards binding, with the original leather and brass clasps. Six thick raised bands. On the front pastedown is a large printed binder's ticket for "Henrich Miller, buchbinder, in der Ost-Dranien Strasse, gegeneuber der Lancaster." This was the largest German bible printed in America up to its time (and long after). In spite of subscribers from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and elsewhere, young 19 year old Johann Bar (John Bear) very nearly went bankrupt from the costs of production and distribution. The binder is also interesting: Henrich Miller, the Lancaster binder, was probably the son of the Philadelphia printer Henrich Miller (1702-1782). Legend has it that he learned bookbinding at the Ephrata Cloister. In any case, he and his children bound books in Lancaster over a period of almost fifty years. Aside from the rather plain but still impressive bindings done for the 1819 folio German Lancaster bible, very few Miller family bindings survive in any kind of acceptable condition. It is an impressive example of early German American printing. Hardbound. Very Good. S&S\AI 47206; Wright 154; GLP/USA 2363. SE Cent 3x2‎

Canstein, was a German aristocrat who became friends with the Pietists Philipp Spener and August Hermann Francke in 1691. The orphanage at Halle became a great center of German religious printing (especially Pietist). SE 2 /3‎

Printing the bible was an enormous undertaking, especially in the wilderness that was then Somerset. It involved: the setting of millions of pieces of type; carving the titlepage and ornament blocks; purchasing, storing, and printing at least 50,000 large full sheets of paper; binding probably 500 copies. In addition, he apparently also wrote: the Preface, the Remarks prefixed to each chapter of the Five Books of Moses, the Commentary to the Song of Solomon and St. John's Revelations. Goeb calls this the 'Die Erste Auflage (First Edition) on both the General and New Testament title pages. He may have been referring to the remarks that he added.GLP/USA 2004; Studer. DIVI AURELII AUGUSTINI DE DOCTRINA CHRISTIANA, LIBRI QUATUOR, UNA CUM SINGULORUM ARGUMENTIS: Omnibus sacram scripturam et recte intelligere cupientibus, et de rebus diuinis facrisque populum fructuose docere volentibus, perquam utiles et necessari, stella duce peruemendu Bethleem. VINCENTII LIRINENSIS GALLI, PRO CATHOLICAE FIDEI ANTIQUITATE & VERIATE : ADUERSUS PROPHANAS OMNIUM HAERESEON NOUATIONES LIBER ELEGANTISSIMUS : Ante annos mille ab authore conscriptus. additum est breue commentariolum, per Joannem Costerium. Apud haeredes Arnoldi Birckmani. Coloniae [Koln]: 1560. / BOUND WITH / 3). Arnoldus Vesalien‎

‎Three works bound in one. 1). pp. [353] Adams 2201; 2). ff. 63, [1]; 3). ff. 155. 24 mo. 120 mm. Attractive contemporary full leather binding over beveled oak boards. Leather worn smooth, though some the old armorial design can be made out. Unusual original twisted metal clasps. Gauphered gilt edges. The first of these works is by St. Augustine (354-430) an early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are 'The City of God'; 'On Christian Doctrine' [included here]; and 'Confessions.' The second title is by St. Vincent of Lerins, who died ca. 445. He was a Gallic monk and author of important early Christian writings. He was probably a proponent of semipelagianism and opposed the Augustine model of grace. The third is by Arnoldus Vesaliensis (Arnold Haldrein), (1484-1534). He was a German Humanist. Here he is joined with Peter Lombard (1096-1160), a scholastic theologian, Bishop of Paris, and author of Four Books of Sentences, which became the standard textbook of theology. Each of these editions are very scarce, and there are only a handful of examples in libraries worldwide. A treasured collection in a wonderful contemporary binding. CHEST 2/1‎
