Roman letter printed in red and black two woodcuts two monks kneeling before the Pope; the author presenting his book to Pope Gregory IV. Thirty full-page xylographic and typographic figurative verses. The poems are rendered using a combination of ordinary type rules and woodcut figures with the highlighted portions printed in red. Thomas Anshelm of Baden started printing in Strasbourg in 1488 and established the first press in Pforzheim c.1500. Rabanus Mauris the Carolingian churchman and Divine was born of noble parents in Mainz in 784 he became Archbishop of Mainz in 847. De Laudibus Sanctae Crucis In Praise of the Holy Cross is one of his most enduring works a collection of poems that present the holy cross in word and image. Written around 810 the work passed down to the middle ages in at least 80 manuscripts the most famous of which is the Vatican's Reginensis Latinus 124 from c.825. This 1503 edition represents the first appearance of the work in print and was one of the earliest books printed in Pforzheim. A fine early example of figure poetry/technopaegnia/calligrams.
