The work sometimes called The Women's Bible is a didactic prose work written in Yiddish circa 1590s whose structure parallels the weekly Torah portions of the Pentateuch and Haftarot which are read in the weekly synagogue services. The work mixes Biblical passages with teachings from the Oral Torah such as the Talmud's Aggadot and Midrashim allegories legends tales and commentary and interpretations of the Torah. The name of the book derives from a verse of the Song of Songs that begins: Tzenha urenha bnot Tziyyon "Go forth and see O ye daughters of Zion" Song 3:11. The nature of the source of the name indicates that the book was intended for women who at the time would have been less versed in the Hebrew language and less educated than men. There have been at least 300 editions of the book printed starting in the 1590s first three printed in Poland. The author Rabbi Jacob ben Isaac Ashkenazi 1550-1624 was born near Lublin Poland. He would tour the neighbouring communities and to publicly read the weekly Torah portions Parashat HaShavua. He has written a few works on the Halacha and the interpretations of the scriptures but Tzena U'rena remains his most famous work. Vinograd Amsterdam 1905. Modern full calf; spine sunned. First edition of highly important collection of eclectic Kabbalah essays. An exhaustive treatise on philosophical scientific and theological subjects. The work consists of ten chapters covering various topics such as: God and his qualities; the creation and order of the world; human anatomy physiology and pathology; rules for enjoying good health and long life; the soul and its functions; the redemption of Israel; and the resurrection and afterlife. Meir Ibn Aldabi was a 14th century Rabbi philosopher doctor and writer son of Isaac Aldabi "He-Chasid" The Pious grandson of Asher ben Yechiel the Rosh and a descendant of the exiles from Jerusalem. His name is ascertained from this text his chief work wherein a poem is found in which every line begins with a letter of his name and there it reads "Aldabi". Shviley Emunah considered being his most important work. Aldabi belonged to the class of popular writers who possessing extensive theological and scientific knowledge commented upon the assertions of their predecessors with a clear understanding expressing here and there their own opinions and presenting some subjects from the standpoint of the Kabbalah. Aldabi was also one of those Talmudists whose conception of religion was wholly spiritual and who revered the Kabbalah he cannot however be called a true Kabbalist. In 1360 he wrote Shvilei Emunah which judging by its numerous editions was for centuries a favourite book with the educated. The book is signed by two Christian sensors on its last printed leaf. The oldest inscription in brown ink reads in Italian: "Checked by my Brother Luigi da Bologna July 1599". On pages 525-526 some words in the text are crossed out using the same ink. The translator states in the preface that the text is designed "for the service of the Synagogue both German and Portuguese" with the parallel English translation facing each page of the Hebrew text strictly following the paragraph breaks. The text indicates the subdivisions within each Parasha i.e. Torah sections with a star. It also includes in the footnotes some noteworthy comments by Rashi Onkelos Mendelssohn or Arnheim as well as Leeser's own observations. The second part of each of the five books after the Parachiot contains the Haftarot a series of selections from the books of Nevi'im Prophets of the Hebrew Bible that are publicly read in synagogues after the Torah reading on each Sabbath and on Jewish festivals and fast days. The culmination of seven years of scholarship this Hebrew and English Pentateuch was published at Leeser's expense both in this tall format and in a smaller version. Leeser's Pentateuch remained the standard English version for American Jews until the Jewish Publication Society translation appeared in 1917. Leeser had a number of reasons to pursue this publication. First he was the chief academic resource person of the Rebecca Gratz's Sunday School which was started in March 1838 in Philadelphia. Students were obliged to use the King James Bible because they did not have a Jewish alternative. Therefore Leeser aimed to provide them with an appropriate translation. Second a popular German-Jewish translation of the Hebrew Bible by Leopold Zunz was published in 1837-38 which Leeser used as a prototype for his own work. Finally Leeser had always wished to provide the Jews of America with an English text of the Bible that was produced by one of their own and not tainted by conversionist motivations. In the preface to the first volume the Rabbi clearly explains that "however much a revised translation may be desired by all believers in the Word of God there is no probability that the gentiles will encourage any publication of this nature emanating from a Jewish writer". Rabbi Isaac Leeser 1806-1868 was born in Westphalia and emigrated to America in 1824. The head Rabbi of the Synagogue Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia he became America's most influential Jewish writer editor and teacher. He promulgated Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States by providing American Jews with numerous basic religious texts and conceptual tools they needed. Singerman 88 Goldman 7.
