‎brossura La storia di Newton è fatta per sorprendere: bambino gracile e malato, sopravvisse a quasi tutti i suoi coetanei; ragazzo destinato a fare il contadino, diventò un sommo scienziato; giovane di umili origini, entrato come servo all'Università di Cambridge, diventò il suo più illustre professore, oltre a essere eletto presidente della Royal Society, direttore della Zecca di Stato e membro del Parlamento. Lo scienziato, sulla scia di Galileo, riuscì a sconvolgere a un tempo la matematica, la fisica e l'astronomia. Eppure Newton non fu (come spesso si crede) un eroe della razionalità ma piuttosto, come disse John Keynes, "l'ultimo dei maghi". Uno spirito inquieto, bruciato da una curiosità quasi maniacale che spaziava dalla scienza, alla religione, all'alchimia.‎

‎Newton. Il sacerdote della natura‎

‎ril. Isaac Newton si staglia come una figura di assoluto primo piano sulla scena della sua epoca. La pubblicazione dei Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (1687) e dell'Opticks (1704), due capolavori destinati a cambiare per sempre la storia della scienza, rivelò ai contemporanei un genio eclettico e versatile, che aveva scoperto le leggi dell'universo e la natura composita della luce solare. La fama che Newton si era conquistato con i risultati delle sue ricerche fu così pervasiva da sconfinare ben oltre le sue competenze scientifiche, tanto che nel corso della sua lunga carriera ricoprì cariche prestigiose e di potere: consigliere di fiducia del governo, direttore della Zecca, presidente della Royal Society. Eppure, questa immagine pubblica faceva da schermo a un altro Newton, che nascondeva in privato delle convinzioni religiose in contrasto con la legge e la dottrina anglicana tali che, se fossero state rese note, avrebbero messo in pericolo non solo il suo lavoro, ma perfino la sua vita. Religione e fede dominarono il pensiero di Newton. E le migliaia di pagine manoscritte dedicate all'esegesi biblica e all'interpretazione delle profezie testimoniano appunto che le sue posizioni teologiche, a partire dalla negazione del concetto centrale di Trinità, erano quelle di un vero e proprio eretico. Non stupisce quindi che lui stesso e gli eredi le avessero deliberatamente occultate, rimanendo per secoli pressoché inaccessibili. ‎br. "A proposito del silenzio, sono un gran maestro in questo genere letterario". Isaak Babel' amava circondarsi di leggenda, ricordando di sé episodi e aneddoti di non mai accertata verità. Dopo i capolavori dell' Armata a cavallo e dei Racconti di Odessa, che ne hanno fatto tra i massimi prosatori russi e forse il più grande tra gli scrittori russi ebrei, visse nell'epoca di Stalin non senza alcuni privilegi, prima di tutto quello di poter viaggiare in Europa. Era amico e protetto di Gorki e quando questi morì nel 1936, pare scrivesse "ora verranno a cercarmi". Fu arrestato processato e fucilato nel 1940 dietro accuse ancora incerte e la sua morte fu conosciuta dalla seconda moglie (la prima viveva in Francia) solo nel 1953, un anno prima della riabilitazione completa "data l'inesistenza dei reati". Non scrisse molto e la sua scarsa alacrità, criticata entro l'associazionismo degli scrittori sovietici, era forse dovuta più all'impossibilità di restare "impuro e innocente" come nei suoi capolavori, che al dissenso attivo verso il Realismo socialista. Era tutto sommato "avvolto in un mantello di enigmatiche ambiguità", come disse la figlia Natalia. E sono queste enigmatiche ambiguità le profondità che questo libro intende scandagliare, afferrando la storia di Babel' da quei momenti e da quegli sprazzi simultaneamente veri nella sostanza e inaffidabili. Quindi non una biografia sistematica ma una rapsodia di voci e scene.‎

A partire da quando la tecnologia si configurò come imprescindibile e fondamentale orizzonte di senso dell'uomo per l'uomo, come universale e macchinatrice nuova scienza della natura all'interno di quella sorta di preistoria del lavoro industriale, meglio ancora, in quella protostoria del lavoro macchinico che fu l'età della manifattura, tra il XVII e la prima metà del XVIII secolo? E ancora: per opera di quali processi la macchina fu posta a un certo punto della storia umana dall'epidermide al cuore della civiltà europea, già prima che essa con la Rivoluzione industriale del carbone, dell'acciaio e dei cavalli vapore divenisse medium privilegiato della divisione del lavoro? Per rispondere a questi urgenti interrogativi, come ad altri in essi impliciti, al tempo della Rivoluzione industriale 4.0, dello sviluppo dell'Intelligenza artificiale e della Smart economy, occorre risalire fino alle origini della prima modernità e precisamente al tempo in cui filosofi del calibro di Galileo Galilei e Isaac Newton, indipendentemente da Dio, dalla Sapienza e dal senso comune, fecero delle loro macchine di misurazione i nuovi ed esclusivi strumenti di ricerca della verità.‎
