"Tzenah Urenah is a rendering in Yiddish of the Torah the Megillot five scrolls of the Bible and the Haftarot. Though there is clear preference for pshat literal meaning the work does not refrain from combining it with drash interpretation of Scripture . Other sources are added in the rendering of the Megillot which although also based on selected verses and topics is closer to the original narrative. While the various early editions show few linguistic differences the editions of the late 18th century became a kind of laboratory for the Yiddish language. Some nineteenth-century editions contain textual variations that bear the impact of Hasidism or the Haskalah. The name of this extremely popular Yiddish work derives from the beginning of the verse O maidens of Zion go forth and gaze Song of Songs 3: 11 which appears in the frontispiece after the title. At a certain point in time unknown to us the book began to be considered as the principal and fundamental reading matter for women. Intended primarily for the Sabbath and holidays the appropriate sections were mainly read at home either silently and individually or aloud for the benefit of other members of the family. These womens readings became an inseparable part of the yearly cycles customary practice in the traditional home throughout the Ashkenazi Diaspora at least until World War II. For many generations the Tzenah Urenah played a major role in the informal education of women and their children by broadening their knowledge of many and varied Hebrew sources leading them in the ways of Jewish thought and behavior and presenting them with a treasure of stories and narratives. Moses who was born in Zaniemysl Poznan had not completed his education before he settled in the United States in the early 1870s. He was appointed to rabbinic positions in Quincy Illinois Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1901 he became rabbi of the Central Synagogue New York where he remained until his retirement in 1919. In his early days in the United States Moses was considered a radical Reformer but later he took a more moderate position. In 1884 he introduced his own prayer book Tefillat Yisrael . Moses was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a member of the Reform committee charged with compiling an official prayer book. The appearance of the Union Prayer Book in 1894 has been credited to his personal initiative in preparing and circulating a manuscript when the committee�s work seemed to be leading nowhere. Moses also published a number of sermons and textbooks for children. His Sabbath School Hymnal first issued in 1894 ran into 14 editions. While in Milwaukee he edited the weekly Der Zeitgeist� Temkin in EJ 2007. Service almost entirely in English and very condensed. Blumenfeld himself contributed very little to the "Ozar Nehmad " but Rapoport Luzzatto Geiger and other learned contributors recognized the great service which he was rendering Jewish science by giving currency to works which but for his generosity would have remained unpublished. The title page states that it will explain their intent in a clear language and explain the subject of yesh aim le-Mikra and aim le-Messorah that is whether a verse is to be understood as it is written or as it is read. It also addresses other issues in the Talmud built upon the structure of the Hebrew language. There are approbations from Rabbi Akiva Eger and from Rabbi Simha Wiel. An apologia from the author follows and then the text in a single column in rabbinic type. It begins with introductory material and continues in the order of issues in the Talmud. After the discourses based on the Talmud is a strong refutation 33a-44b on modifications to the accepted liturgy in the book Iggeret beit Tefillah by Isaac Satanof 1732-1804 . The latter was a Haskalah writer who in his book classified every word that he explained as either "Hebrew" or "talmudic " and proceeded to clarify this question at other opportunities as well. Satanof attempted to break out of the strict framework of biblical style although he himself was very adept in the biblical style called melizah. Hence he demanded that new words be coined; in Iggeret Beit Tefillah he complains that the vocabulary of biblical Hebrew had not preserved its great lexical range. Other Titles: Dr. Isaak Erter's gesammelte Schriften. Erter 1791-1851 was a �Hebrew satirist of the Haskalah. Born in Koniuszek near Przemysl Erter during the earlier part of his life lived in various places including Lvov where he together with a group of young maskilim was excommunicated in 1816 by Rabbi Jacob Ornstein; Budapest where he studied medicine; and Brody then an important commercial and cultural center for Galician Jewry where he settled in 1831 and remained for the rest of his life. In addition to his literary work Erter was also active communally among Haskalah circles showing special interest in the plans for a reform of contemporary Jewish society. Toward the end of his life he collaborated with his friend Y. H. Schorr in the early stages of the founding of He-Halutz a Hebrew periodical dedicated to the study of Judaica in the spirit of religious reform and distinguished by a boldly critical treatment of problems relating to Jewish tradition. Erter's only book Ha-Zofeh le-Veit Yisrael consists of five satires all of which had been published separately with the addition of some personal correspondence relevant to his literary career. Noteworthy among the satires are the following: Hasidut ve-Hokhmah Tashlikh and Gilgul Nefesh. Written in the form of epistles several of the satires seem to have been modeled on the work of Lucian the second-century Greek satirist whose writings were very popular in European Rationalist literature and which Erter came to know in Wieland's German translation. Lucian's satiric and ironic treatment of Greek mythology and of ignorant and boorish antiquity during its decline was adapted by Erter in his fight against the traditionalist Jewish society of his day. The recurring character � a type of "persona satirae" � "the watchman of the House of Israel " has its source in the prophet-castigator of Ezekiel 3: 17; by virtue of the authority of the biblical figure Erter's watchman reviews the reality of Jewish society in Galicia and Poland in the first half of the 19th century. In this narrative written in an autobiographical manner the "observer" gathers evidence and confronts the reader with confessions of figures belonging to an imaginary fanciful world confessions made in a dream state or after death. Having endowed them with a keen rhetoric ability Erter enables these figures to explain their character and experience by ironic exaggeration coupled with the idealistic pathos characteristic of the Haskalah movement� Werses in EJ 2007 .
