‎Der Kupferstich von Isaac Mills, gezeichnet von William Hogarth. Von der Kanzel aus predigt laut rufend und wild gestikulierend ein Mann. Die Zuhörer wirken wenig interessiert. - William Hogarth, 1697 - 1764, sozialkritischer englischer Maler und Graphiker. Als Vorläufer moderner Karikaturisten prangerte er die Moden, Sitten, Gebräuche und soziale Missstände seiner Zeit schonungslos an. Neben der Popularität seiner Werke kursierten schon früh Fälschungen, Raubkopien und Nachdrucke. Der Künstler erwirkte 1735 ein Urheberrechtsschutzgesetz, das auch heute noch seinen Namen trägt (Hogarth Act). - Das Blatt frisch in leuchtender Farbigkeit. Beeindruckend die Vielfalt der dargestellten Charaktere. Ein schönes, interessantes Blatt.‎

‎Graff 2040. - Titelauflage eines bei Trattner in Wien im Jahre 1766 erschienen Drucks dieser auf der 1748 in Rom von Ruggiero Giuseppe Boscovich (Rugjer Josip Boskovic) erschienen optischen Abhandlung "Dissertationis de lumine" aufbauenden Arbeit. - "Having reflected on the problems of light, Boskovic published in 1748 a treatise (in two parts) of a broadly critical nature. The central Newtonian positions in optics did not all appear to him to be securely established. It is perhaps the most interesting feature of his critical attitude that he regarded rectilinear propagation as an unproved hypothesis, a question on which he dealt in detail. ... He formulated, and was the first to do so, a general photometruc law of illumination and enounced the law of emission Lambert`s name. He was critical to Newton`s account of colors arising from the passage of light through thin plates involving the ether and peridicity, and he provided an alternative interpretation in the spirit of his own theory of natural forces ..." ‎This is an about very good hardcover copy in dark blue cloth boards with title in gilt on the front cover. Very clean inside and out. Top right corners of boards worn. Internally very clean, some handling of the pages, not crisp. This was the first catalog published by the Greenwich Gallery located in Greenwich Village, on 71 Washington Place, in the area around New York University, which itself surrounds Washington Square Park. The exhibition featured paintings and sculpture by 50 American contemporary artists. Many of them immigrants from Russia or Eastern Europe, many Jewish. The gallery intended to show American modern, but representational or figurative art. They included: Milton Avery, Saul Baizerman, Isabel Bishop, Byron Browne, Charles Burchfield, David Burliuk, Doris Caesar, Jose de Creeft, Philip Evergood, William Gropper, Chaim Gross, George Grosz, Edward Hopper, Leon Kroll, Jack Levine, Jacques Lipchitz, Georgia O'Keefe, Henry Varnum Poor, Larry Rivers, Ben Shahn, the Soyer brothers Raphael, Isaac and Moses, Abraham Walkowitz, Max Weber, Andrew Wyeth and William Zorach, among many others. Each artist gets two pages: one biographical information and a black & white illustration. Essay by A.L. Chanin. 10" high X 7" wide. This book will be securely packed and shipped with tracking.‎

Rarissima ediz. orig. di questo importante trattato sul moto dei mari e dei venti dell'erudito ugonotto olandese Isaac Voss (Leida, 1618-Londra, 1689). A seguito della crescente importanza dei commerci marittimi e delle esplorazioni via mare, cominciarono ad essere studiate le cause delle maree. Voss respinge l'influenza della luna e delle stelle, sostenendo che e' il calore del sole a generare venti, maree e correnti oceaniche. Attribuisce infatti al riscaldamento solare l'aumento del livello del mare nella regione equatoriale con la conseguente formazione di maree e correnti. In maniera corretta sostiene che la circolazione del Nord Atlantico sia in senso orario. Il testo include riferimenti a vari luoghi del Nord e Sud America, fra i quali California, Florida, Virginia. Vossel, nel 1649, si trasferi' a Stoccolma, dove divenne bibliotecario ed insegnante di greco di Cristina di Svezia. Poi ando' in Inghilterra dove rimase fino alla morte. Qui fu canonico dei Windsor. Appassionato collezionista di libri ed egli stesso autore di opere di svariato genere (letteratura classica, geografia, cronologia biblica), lascio' alla morte una fra le piu' grandi biblioteche private del mondo.
