Title translates into English as �Rabbi Ephraim Elncaoua The Rabbi of Tlemcen 1360-1442.� Scarce Holocaust-era publication about Rabbi Ephraim ben Israel Alnaqua 1360-1442 here published in Tlemcen itself. Alnaqua was �a physician rabbi theological writer and founder of the Jewish community at Tlem�en North Africa� According to a legend Alnaqua escaped from the Spanish Inquisition which had martyred his father and mother at the stake and came to Maghreb mounted on a lion using a serpent as a halter. Azulai refered to him as a miracle-worker. Alnaqua succeeded after all other physicians had failed in curing the only daughter of a king of the Zayyanid dynasty. Refusing the reward of gold and silver offered him by the king he begged only that the Jews living near Tlem�en might be united in it. In this way the community was formed. Alnaqua's first care was to establish a large synagogue: this is still in existence as of 1906 and bears his name. Above the rabbi's chair on which the verse Jer. Xvii.12 is engraved a lamp burns perpetually. Alnaqua's grave surrounded by those of his family is in the old cemetery: it is sacred to North African Jews and as of 1906 is frequently visited by pilgrims from all Algeria�� Wikipedia 2016 No holdings worldwide on OCLC. Written by Israel Rabinovitch 1894-1964 �an accomplished musician and writer was chief editor of the Montreal Yiddish daily newspaper the Keneder Adler from 1924 to 1964. � Following in the tradition of fellow musicologist Professor Abraham Tzvi Idelsohn whom he greatly admired Rabinovitch used the Keneder Adler as a platform to share his love for Jewish music writing widely about it and contributing to the status and knowledge of hazzanut cantorial arts in Canada. In 1940 Rabinovitch published the book Muzik bai Yidn Music by Jews which was translated from Yiddish into English by A. M. Klein in 1952 under the title Jewish Music: Ancient and Modern. � Rabinovitch was one of the founders of the Jewish Public Library a leader in the Labour Zionist group Poale Zion and also the first president of the Jewish Music Council of Montreal. He passed away in Montreal in 1964. Inscribed by Israel Davidson in script on title page. �Yannai liturgical poet one of the principal representatives of the old Palestinian piyyut. � Davidson's publications opened new horizons for research into Yannai. In 1910 he found a Genizah fragment with quotations and beginnings of poems from the 'Mahzor Yannai'; this established the existence of a greater poetic work of Yannai's. In 1919 he found in some Greek-Hebrew genizah fragment palimpsests published by F. C. Burkitt in Fragments of the Book of Kings 1897 and by C.
