Dopo gli attentati terroristici che hanno colpito Parigi, Bruxelles e Londra ciascuno si è chiesto, almeno una volta, per quale motivo dei giovani nati e cresciuti in Europa finiscano per scegliere la violenza disumana del Califfato. Olivier Roy propone una chiave di lettura sconcertante: non è l'integralismo islamico la prima causa di questo terrorismo, ma un disagio tutto giovanile, un'esigenza folle, violenta e fuori controllo di rottura generazionale. Certo, per compiere questa rottura c'è bisogno di un pretesto. E questi giovani lo trovano facilmente nell'odio puro ostentato dall'lsis. Dopo "Global Muslim" e "La santa ignoranza", Roy ritorna con un'analisi attualissima che propone l'"islamizzazione del radicalismo" come soluzione interpretativa del terrorismo contemporaneo. Il fenomeno riguarda soltanto alcune migliaia di giovani musulmani e pochi convertiti, che appartengono a una generazione del tutto estranea a quella dei propri genitori. Il sociologo indaga le loro abitudini, si chiede che musica ascoltino, chi siano i loro eroi, scopre che non sanno quasi nulla del Corano e che frequentano raramente le moschee. E dimostra che la loro ostilità non affonda le radici nello scontro di religione, ma esprime un'esigenza di rottura che si rivolge non solo contro la cultura dei genitori, ma anche contro la società in cui sono nati, cioè quella occidentale. Da qui proviene il nichilismo radicale al quale il Califfato, con la sua violenza e la promessa di un aldilà paradisiaco, offre un rimedio "nobile" e un'occasione per diventare martiri, veri eroi.
