‎br. Questo libro tratta dell'ascesa dell'islamismo nel mondo arabo. Non è, però, un trattato accademico né un'inchiesta giornalistica, ma una ricostruzione narrativa basata sulla testimonianza di uno scrittore il cui paese, l'Algeria, già dai primi anni Sessanta si è dovuto misurare con tale fenomeno. I primi predicatori religiosi islamisti, per lo più membri dei Fratelli musulmani, fecero infatti la loro comparsa in Algeria all'indomani della guerra di liberazione dalla colonizzazione francese (1954-1962). Arrivavano tutti dai paesi del Medio Oriente, dove venivano puntualmente perseguitati dai regimi e dalle tirannie al potere. L'Algeria era in quegli anni «la Mecca dei rivoluzionari», un paese socialista, terzomondista, profondamente laico, guardato con ammirazione in tutto il mondo progressista. Algeri era una città dove accorrevano Che Guevara, Castro, Mandela, il generale Giap e altri celebrati «eroi» delle guerre di liberazione dell'epoca. Agli occhi della società progressista algerina i predicatori islamisti apparivano perciò come individui bizzarri dall'abbigliamento e dal vocabolario così stravaganti da suscitare simpatia. Anni dopo quella stessa società scoprì, dapprima con sommo stupore e poi con somma impotenza, che quell'islamismo così misero e insignificante si era talmente diffuso in tutto il paese, attraverso la rete delle moschee e dei suk, da mobilitare folle immense, organizzare milizie capaci di imporre l'ordine islamista nelle strade, sviluppare un'economia cosiddetta islamica, accaparrarsi in modo massiccio le attività caritatevoli, estirpare la delinquenza nei quartieri sotto il suo controllo, sfidare ogni giorno lo Stato, infiltrarsi nelle rivolte popolari, installarsi in Occidente e attaccare la democrazia utilizzando la democrazia stessa con abilità e astuzia. Nel nome di Allah è un'agile storia delle varie correnti, scuole e movimenti dell'islamismo, e del suo rapporto con la cultura «araba», che getta luce su un fenomeno che, benché abbia offuscato l'immagine dell'Islam, trasformandosi in un fascismo assassino che obbedisce solo alla volontà di potenza, continua a piantare radici nel mondo musulmano.‎

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was one of the first establishments to introduce a Western-style educational system to the peoples of the Ottoman Empire. This thesis is an examination of the emergence of interest in foreign missions among American women in particular, and the latter s contribution to missionary activities. It seeks to determine how and why educational facilities for Armenian females were established and their social and religious impact, largely from the perspective of the missionaries themselves. It looks at how contact with Armenians prompted adjustments in missionary approaches and policies towards educational missions. The notion of educated Christian womanhood entailed the championing of female education and a re-imaging of the role of women as wives and mothers. The promotion of female education facilitated new opportunities for Armenian women via teaching and evangelism. The central argument of this thesis is that American missionary activity significantly contributed to the increased interest in female education among the Armenian communities of the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century.‎
