Sotto il suo passo nascono i fiori. Goethe e l'Islam
ril. Quando, in punto di morte, Goethe mosse il suo indice dal basso verso l'alto, i testimoni che gli erano vicini rimasero sorpresi: per secoli questo gesto è rimasto emblematico e inspiegabile. Oggi, grazie alla suggestiva ricostruzione di Pietrangelo Buttafuoco e di Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre, possiamo coglierne il senso: si tratta di un gesto simbolico della shahada, la testimonianza di fede che ogni musulmano deve compiere in punto di morte per riaffermare di credere nel Dio unico. Attraverso una lunga e approfondita ricerca negli archivi e negli epistolari di Goethe, seguendo le testimonianze di coloro che gli furono più vicini, gli autori raccontano la scoperta e l'avvicinamento del grande scrittore tedesco all'Islam, rintracciandone l'influenza nell'opera poetica, teatrale e saggistica. Un'influenza vissuta però in modo estremamente peculiare e del tutto attuale, e che testimonia della capacità di Goethe di fondere nella sua riflessione elementi filosofici e religiosi appartenenti alla tradizione occidentale come a quella araba e medio-orientale, dando così forma a un pensiero coerente e vitale. Sotto il suo passo nascono i fiori offre al lettore non soltanto una ricostruzione della vita di Goethe - dalla sua prima lettura del Corano nel 1770 alla morte nel 1832 - e uno studio delle sue opere maggiormente ispirate dalla religione musulmana, ma anche l'occasione di riflettere sulla suggestione di un futuro europeo legato a "un Islam mitigato dai cieli del Mediterraneo", un orizzonte di pace verso il quale, secondo gli autori, il poeta orientò le sue più profonde tensioni personali e intellettuali.
