A descriptive catalogue of the Fyzee Collection of Ismaili manuscripts.Most of the Western Isma'ili literature is in Arabic. A number of these works are extant in manuscript form and are preserved by some of the followers of ad-Da'watu'l-Qadîma, mainly by the Dâ'ûdî Bohras of India. It is said that large numbers of manuscripts are also preserved in the Yemen. Besides these two major sources, manuscripts are found in some other places also. The Ismaili Society has collected manuscripts and preserved them in their library. Non-Ismaailis are taking an interest in this literature, so we find some valuable manuscripts in some public libraries and private collections. This collection of Ismaili manuscripts, belnging to Asaf A. A. Fyzee and presented tothe Bombay University Library, contains some valuable works. The first Ismâ'îlî author is Abû Hâtîm ar-Râzî (see no. ii). He was a contemporary of the famous Razes. His twoimportant works. Kitâbu'l-Islâh (see no. 11) and A'Lâmu'n-nubûwa (see no. 10) are found in this collection . Then Ismâ'îlî literature in the Fatimid period developed fully in the time of Hamîdu'd-dîn al-Kirmânî (see no. viii)ç. Most of his works are also included in this collection. With few exceptions, these Christians invited execution by committing capital offenses: some appeared before the Muslim authorities to denounce Mohammed; others, Christian children of mixed Islamic-Christian marriages, publicly proclaimed their Christianity. Coope investigates the origins of this "martyrs' movement" in Córdoba, then flourishing as a center of Islamic culture. She cites the fears of radical Christians that conversions to Islam were on the increase and that still more Christians were being assimilated into Arab Muslim culture. These fears were well-founded, and the executions further divided Cordovan Christians: some believed the executed to be martyrs, others argued that these were not martyrs but fanatics and troublemakers. For their part, the Muslim authorities, disposed to be tolerant, would have preferred sectarian peace; the martyrs were given every opportunity to recant. Using Christian sources (particularly the hagiographies of St. Eulogius) and Arabic accounts to understand the complex tensions in Muslim Spain between and among the Muslim majority and Christian minority, Coope presents a valuable and fresh view of this society at the apogee of al-Andalus, Muslim Spain.

Il lavoro di Du Ryer servì come base per ulteriori traduzioni del Corano in inglese, tedesco, olandese e russo e fu determinante per introdurre gli europei ai principi della fede musulmana. Du Ryer era un celebre linguista e aveva vissuto in Egitto e Turchia, dove aveva studiato arabo classico. La sua introduzione riassume brevemente la religione musulmana per i lettori cristiani, osservando usanze come il Ramadan, la circoncisione, la pratica di avere fino a quattro mogli, il significato della Mecca e Medina, le confraternite sufi e gli asceti erranti, e infine il riconoscimento islamico di Gesù come un profeta ma non il figlio di Dio. Una preghiera stampata in arabo è inclusa sul verso del foglio e2. Du Ryer usò commentari islamici come Anwar al-tanzil di al-Bayawi, il Tafsir al-Jalalayan di al-Mahalli (m. 864/1459) e al-Suyu i (m. 911 / 1505), e un estratto dal grande commento di al-Razi († 606/1210) fatto da l-Raghi l-Tunisi († 715/1315) intitolato al-Tanwir fi l-tafsir. "Du Ryer parlava correntemente turco e arabo, e trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita in viaggi lunghi e ardui, probabilmente intrapresi nell'interesse dell'Ordine del Santo Sepolcro di cui era un cavaliere" (Grand -Larousse). E tuttavia Corbin ci mostra come questo monoteismo sia fin dall'inizio e per sempre minacciato da una doppia trappola: quella di una rinascita idolatrica che fa di Dio un ente tra gli enti, confondendolo nella storia e nella società, e quella di una trascendenza portata all'estremo che, senza mediazioni teofaniche, si tramuta in disperante nichilismo. A queste tendenze Corbin oppone le lezioni della gnosi islamica, ebraica e cristiana, la loro ontologia integrale, e angelologia, il loro mundus imaginalis mediatore e risolutore di ogni falsa opposizione. Con "Il paradosso del monoteismo" Corbin, oltre che proporre un cammino, ha lanciato una sfida: certamente per chi sa ed è in grado di coglierla. Ha voluto spalancare dinnanzi a una umanità stanca, sfiduciata e depressa l'abisso dell'Essere-Uno, invitando i migliori non a sostarvi dinnanzi cercando di capirne - razionalmente, astrattamente e vanamente - la profondità e il significato, ma a lasciarvisi coraggiosamente. I Saggi sono coloro che in tre meravigliosi capitoli Ibn 'Arabi ci descrive come i "cavalieri" o i "cavalieri dell'Invisibile"; è grazie a essi che in questo mondo terreno può esistere una "scienza delle corrispondenze". [.. .] Ta bir al-ru'ya è l'interpretazione delle visioni, dei sogni, ed è una delle applicazioni per eccellenza della "scienza della Bilancia". Essa permette di compiere il passaggio dalle forme percepite nella visione al significato segreto della loro apparizione. Le nostre visioni in sogno nel mondo della Notte. come quelle che percepiamo in ciò che chiamiamo il mondo del Giorno, necessitano del medesimo passaggio, affinché noi possiamo percepirne il significato segreto. La ragione di questo è che sia le une che le altre sono motivate da un'intenzione segreta propria a un altro mondo e da esso proveniente. Ecco perché il mondo del nostro presente, della Notte come del Giorno, è un ponte che si tratta di oltrepassare. Un ponte è un luogo di transito; non ci si ferma, né si prende dimora su un ponte. Lo si varca, e occorre varcarlo per comprendere il significato segreto, la "corrispondenza" invisibile di quel che è trasceso e lasciato da questa parte. Tale è il compito degli interpreti, degli ermeneuti del senso esoterico, promossi al rango di "cavalieri dell'Invisibile"».
