ill., br. Il rapporto tra Milano, l'Islam e le sue popolazioni è una pagina di storia rimasta finora inesplorata. L'apertura della città ai grandi temi dell'illuminismo europeo, poi il suo progressivo coinvolgimento nelle vicende mediterranee con il Risorgimento e la politica coloniale del giovane Regno d'Italia, ebbero l'inevitabile conseguenza di metterla in contatto con i molteplici mondi dell'Islam, in precedenza qui poco o nulla conosciuti. Nel corso del libro, attraverso gli occhi di studiosi, viaggiatori, esuli, esploratori, artisti e pellegrini, ritroviamo l'Islam che essi si rappresentarono, che raffigurarono nei loro libri, nelle scenografie e nella pittura, che apprezzarono negli oggetti delle loro collezioni e vollero imitare nella decorazione e nell'architettura, che presentarono all'opinione pubblica sulla stampa e nelle grandi esposizioni. Non ne venne un'immagine coerente, come uno stile della città nel rapporto con questi mondi, piuttosto una molteplicità di giudizi, spesso tra loro contraddittori. Prevalsero le descrizioni distaccate, prive di coinvolgimento, cariche di pregiudizio, qualche volta potentemente negative; vi furono tuttavia anche donne e uomini capaci di andare oltre il muro dell'estraneità e costruire con le realtà incontrate un rapporto di reciproco scambio, ricco di possibili sviluppi. La doppia eredità di quel lungo Ottocento è ancora attiva nell'opinione pubblica e nelle istituzioni.

br. Migliaia di cittadini occidentali, immigrati di seconda generazione ma anche autoctoni convertiti, combattono in Siria e in Iraq tra le fila dell'Is o di Al Qgeda. Chi sono e cosa li spinge a compiere una simile scelta? I foreign fighters occidentali non hanno un profilo tipo: tra essi si trovano giovani che provengono da ceti medi e popolari, da periferie metropolitane come da zone residenziali, piccoli delinquenti di quartiere e laureati in buone università. Le biografie dei combattenti jihadisti mostrano la loro eterogeneità sociale e culturale. E permettono di analizzare il contesto nel quale matura la loro scelta estrema. A spingerli verso lo jihadismo è, innanzitutto, l'adesione a un'ideologia totalizzante vissuta come ultima grande narrazione capace di inrterpretare e dare forma al mondo. Ideologia che legittima una violenza dilatata sino al limite estremo e che induce chi vi aderisce a imboccare la via del "martirio" nei deserti mesopotamici o nelle città occidentali. Nel libro sono analizzate le cause politiche, culturali, religiose che inducono i giovani europei a partecipare al jihad. Volgendo lo sguardo verso i luoghi sociali, dalla Rete alle moschee, dalle periferie alle carceri, nei quali avviene la radicalizzazione che precede tale scelta. Per compiere, infine, una ricognizione nelle storie di vita di alcuni foreign fighters francesi, il gruppo più numeroso tra i combattenti europei, e di alcuni convertiti italiani.

So we decided to invite some Turkish researchers and scholars on a private basis and ask them to present their work and experience as far as it touched on the subject and to engage in discussion on their papers. The book has three prominent themes. The first is the emergence of new orientations on all sides towards Muslims and Europeans living together at the present time, and possibly coming to practical cooperation and dialogue. The second is Turkish Muslim self-understanding and views of Europe, as far as they are expressed in intellectual terms. The third is the ways in which Turkish Muslim life in the European diaspora is organized. It will be clear that these three themes are interrelated and consequently the three parts of the book are not independent of each other.
