ÖBL III, 228. - Joseph Karabacek (1845 - 1918) studierte zunächst Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Wien, wandte sich 1866 der Orientalistik zu und wurde 1868 zum Dr. phil. promoviert. 1869 habilitierte er sich für arabische Paläographie, wurde 1885 Ordinarius für Geschichte des Orients und ihrer Hilfswissenschaften und lehrte als solcher bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1915. 1899-1917 war Joseph von Karabacek auch Direktor der Hofbibliothek. Bereits 1868 hatte er die Gründung der Wiener Numismatischen Gesellschaft angeregt und war lange Mitredakteur der "Wiener numismatischen Monatshefte". Zu seinen bedeutendsten Forschungsarbeiten gehört die Entzifferung der weltberühmten Sammlung antiker Papyri, u.a. des Papyrus Erzherzog Rainer aus dem Fund von El Faijûm. - Die vorliegende erste größere Monographie von Joseph von Karabacek behandelt die Geschichte der Mazyadyden unter besonderer Berücksichtigung einer von Philipp Politzer in Bosra (Busra) in Syrien gefundenen Steininschrift. Neben den allgemeinen historischen Bemerkungen zur Geschichte des Mazyadiden und der Geschichte Arabiens um 1000 n. Chr. enthält das Werk eine detaillierte paläographische Analyse dieses wichtigen Quellenfundes aus Bosra. - Etw. gebräunt und kaum fleckig.‎

Kasim Hadzic (Zaostar near Priboj (Novopazarski Sandzak, 1917 - Sarajevo 1990)) was a sharia judge and teacher, graduated from the Great Madrasa in Skopje in 1937, and graduated from "Visem islamskom serijatsko-bogoslovnom ucilistu" [i.e. the Higher Islamic Sharia Theological College] in Sarajevo in 1941. In the summer of 1941 he served as mayor of Priboj during the short-lived rule of the Independent State of Croatia in Sandzak, and since 1942 he has been an intern at the District Sharia Court in Sarajevo. From 1942 to 1945 he was the editor of the Sarajevo Croatian Muslim weekly 'Osvit' [i.e. Dawn]. He has been a teacher at the Gazi Husrev-Beg Madrasa in Sarajevo since 1957. He died in Sarajevo.‎

Kate Fleet's book examines the trade links which existed between European merchants and their Muslim counterparts from the beginnings of the Ottoman empire in 1300 to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. By using previously unexploited Latin and Turkish sources, and by focusing on the trading partnership between the Genoese and the Turks, she demonstrates how this interaction contributed to the economic development of the early Ottoman state and, indeed, to Ottoman territorial expansion. Where other studies have emphasized the military prowess of the early Ottoman state and its role as 'the infidel enemy', the book offers an insight into its economic aspirations and eventual integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin.
