‎Depuis l'invasion de l'Irak, l'actualité proche-orientale a propulsé sur la scène médiatique un chiisme dont la "montée", signalée comme une donnée géopolitique majeure au Moyen-Orient, est parfois appréhendée comme un nouveau "péril", en Occident et par certains régimes arabes. C'est ce contexte qui a popularisé l'expression de "croissant chiite" pour désigner et souvent stigmatiser, de l'Afghanistan au Liban, une série de zones chiites, articulées autour de l'Iran et susceptibles de former un bloc servant les intérêts de la République islamique d'Iran. A l'encontre de ce "croissant chiite", ce livre présente les "mondes chiites", au pluriel, dans toute leur complexité. De l'Afrique à la Chine, sans compter les diasporas, on trouve des groupes chiites duodécimains souvent minoritaires, parfois majoritaires. Par sa position géographique et son rôle dans l'histoire, l'Iran est au centre de ces mondes chiites, mais que signifie et que recouvre vraiment cette centralité ? Ce livre réunit des spécialistes des aires géographiques concernées. Il offre un parcours au cœur de ces contextes multiples, où être chiite ne correspond jamais exactement à une même réalité sociale et culturelle, malgré des références communes, doctrinales et politiques. L'exportation de la révolution, qui fut longtemps le paradigme de l'influence iranienne sur les mondes chiites, a fait son temps, même si dans certains cas, tel celui du Hezbollah libanais, son héritage est évident. Quel rôle joue réellement l'Iran dans les chiismes en construction, à Istanbul, Bakou, Boukhara et Tachkent, ou encore chez les chiites de Dakar ?.
