Cunningham, Robert O
Notes on the Natural History of the Straits of Magellan and West Coast Patagonia made during the voyage of H.M.S. 'Nassua' in the years 1866 67 68 & 69 John Ruskin's copy
Edinburgh: Edmondston & Douglas 1871. Illustrated with a folding coloured chart 17 plain litho plates 4 tinted litho plates of which two are waterstained thick octavo pp xviii 517 slightly age-toned internally one gathering proruding and a little loose the endpapers are also stained but the remaining contents clear and clean original green cloth very slightly marked slight wear to the corners small tears at head and tail of the spine. With the tiny book label of John Ruskin Brantwood. An inscription on the half-title reads "Dr Waller With Mr Cunningham's kindest regards in grateful recollection of July and August 1870". The Ruskin bookplate helps identify Dr Waller as David Waller the founder of Queenswood School. The name Queenswood derives from a lecture by John Ruskin 1819-1900 "Of Queens Gardens" published in 1865 in Sesame and Lilies and so does the school motto 'in hortis reginæ' "In Queens Gardens". Ruskins ideas on the education power and place of women in society formed the basis of the school ethos. Ruskin acquired the house in 1871 and it may be that this book was an ealry gift from Waller At some stage it was acquired by Professor Jack Hawkes and his signature dated 1945 is written below the Ruskin label. An intriguing copy. Signed by Author. First Edition. Cloth. Good. Edmondston & Douglas Hardcover

Curwen, Eliot; Rompkey, Ronald (Editor)
Labrador Odyssey: The Journal and Photographs of Eliot Curwen on the Second Voyage of Wilfred Grenfell, 1893
xxxix, 231 pages. Footnotes and index. Black and white reproductions of photos. "A religious, well-educated Victorian, Eliot Curwen takes us into the heart of the colonial society he encountered. His journal provides insights into its pervasive sectariansim, the tawdry political world of St. John's, the rudimentary conditions aboard the fishing schooners, and the poverty of the Labrador 'livyers,' the permanent white settlers who had intermarried with the Inuit. His candid remarks about Grenfell reveal details about the young missionary and social reformer not found elsewhere." - dust jacket. Faint pencil erasure atop half-title page, otherwise book clean, bright and unmarked with light wear. Dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A pleasing copy. Book
