VERY SCARCE. The author educated at Eton where he was proficient in Oriental languages. Davies then joined the Army and was sent to British-controlled Burma in 1887 and to Siam in 1892. In 1893 he was attached to a survey unit which surveyed the passes between Burma and China which located the Crouching Tiger Pass the Heavenly Horse Pass and the Han Dragon Pass. On completion of the team's objectives Davies remained in China to explore the Yunnan area. On his return to England he was asked to survey a potential railway route from India to the Yangtze river via Yunnan and in 1898 returned to Burma. The last 14 pages are a Supplement - Indices of States Places and Railroad Routes of Mexico. Pringle 1838 - 1911 was an American botanist who spent a career of 35 years cataloguing the plants of North America. He was a prolific collector and accomplished botanical explorer. In 1880 he received three commissions: collecting wood samples for the Jesup Collection under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History; exploring American forests and collecting data for a final report for the United States Census Bureau working for Charles Sprague Sargent; and general botanical collecting on behalf of Asa Gray. In 1884 he made a botanical survey of the northern portions of Arizona under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution. Pringle was appointed to the Gray Herbarium as a botanical collector in 1885 eventually making 39 expeditions to Mexico over the next 24 years. In April 1896 he was elected a member of the newly established New England Botanical Club and attended the meetings when in Boston. He was a charter member and later vice-president of the Vermont Botanical Club. During his 35 years of field work in the United States Canada and Mexico Pringle collected over 500000 specimens which included some 1200 species new to science. All edges untrimmed and pages on top edge of both volumes partially unopened. 181 and 175 pages respectively. Edited by John Vance Cheney. Limited private printing offered for subscription only to members of the Bibliophile Society. Text reprinted from the first edition of 1803 with some minor abridgment. No previous ownership marks. The account of four and a half years of travel through the Southern States of North America which began at the very end of the 18th century by a witty and observant Englishman. His observations and comments on the state of slavery are of particular interest as are his comments of the new capital Washington D.C. A clean square unmarked set. Vellum spine lightly toned but clean with none of the blotching usually present. A hint of foxing to title-page in volume I else a very clean set inside and out. Near fine. Clark vol.
