Dorothy Black (Delius) (1899-1985), English romantic novelist, travel and short-story writer [Ladies' Home Journal; Eimar O'Duff
Dorothy Black Delius romantic novelist Typed Letter Signed 'Dorothy Black' to Kathleen Cruise O'Brien O'Duffy the wife of the Irish writer Eimar O'Duffy.
26 June 1925; La Chaumiere Shillong Assam. 4to: 3 pp. Text clear and entire on creased chipped airmail paper. A chatty vivacious and entertaining letter casting light on the state of mind of an English colonial wife. Thanks her for her 'kind remarks about my stories. May I say in return that I also like your story very much and it appears to have what all the Editors are clamouring for all the time - a happy ending!' Congratulates O'Duffy on her marriage 'You say they told you that you were mad to get married and without a certain amount of madness I do not see how any of us would ever take that awful step!' But you were not half as mad as people who marry for money or position or a shooting in Scotland or a motor car or a diamond tiara'. The Blacks 'live as a rule in Rangoon Burma a very hot place indeed where beads of honest sweat decorate every brow all the time.' Finds 'the opportunity of giving a description of herself a rare and glorious one!' Gives a physical description she has 'the slightly wilted appearance of all women who have to live in the Tropics for any length of time' and describes her career as a journalist before marriage. 'I used to look down from the tops of busses into motor cars where the Really Wealthy sat and think how nice life must be from the back seat of a Rolls. And when last I was in England I sat in the back seat of a Sunbeam and looked up onto the top of the passing busses and thought what fun life could be on 2d all the way. If you are still fairly poor remember that. I am not sure one does not get a great deal more pleasure on 2/6d saved up than on trips to Paris when expense is no object. I have tried both and this is my candid opinion.' Explains how 'the only story I ever more or less lived is Marcia's'. 'For last summer I had been working very hard and one day I put a suit case into the back of my two seater Standard and threw my children to the Nurse and went off into the blue.' She has no photograph to send 'I have as I already said one of those Noses.' but says that there is a photograph of her in the June number of the Ladies' Home Journal. As for her age her seven-year-old son says she is twenty-one 'or at the very most . she may be twenty-two'. 'Shall we leave it at that It is so much kinder.' Wishes she could visit O'Duffy at Daffodil Cottage. 'Here we are perched so to speak upon the kettle lid of the world.' Mentions earthquake jungle jackals. 'And it rains rains rains and the newspapers say "The Monsoon is progressing satisfactorily in Assam."' Short autograph postscript. 26 June 1925; La Chaumiere, Shillong, Assam. unknown

Douglas Mawson, (Sir)
THE HOME OF THE BLIZZARD. Being the Story of the Australasian Expedition 1911-1914
<p>William Heinemann London 1915. First Edition. Hardcover Original Cloth. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 1st 2 Volume Edition; Vol I xxx 349 pages illustrated. Frontispiece 8 colour plates 108 b/w plates 4 folding 17 text illustrations. Vol II xiii 338 pages. Frontispiece 10 colour plates 93 b/w plates 5 folding 20 text illustrations 3 folding maps in rear pocket. Original decorative covers "Leaning into the Wind" - in silver to front cover. The book is in the same format as Shackleton's Heart of the Antarctic which is advertised on the first half-title verso. Shelf wear some fading to spine and odd page loosening but all complete contents clean and bright all maps as called for and are all in good condition overall a lovely copy. Initially intending to be a member of Scott's party Mawson decided to command his own expedition the first official Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Mawson charted more than 2000 miles of coastline and nearly lost his life in a wild sledge journey. In the process he developed a detailed scientific analysis of George V Land and Macquarie Island and produced this classic account of heroic age exploits which includes stunning photography from the camera of Frank Hurley. Shore parties wintered at Cape Denison and on the Shackleton Ice Shelf. The former base was unfortunately located in an area of constant gale-force winds hence the title. In December 1912 a sledge party reached the South Magnetic Pole located by Eric Webb. Meanwhile another party consisting of Mawson Ninnis and Mertz explored eastwards across George V Land. Only Mawson returned to base Ninnis having fallen down a crevasse. With him went the 6 fittest dogs & the most indispensable supplies. Mertz & Mawson improvised feeding the dogs worn out mitts raw-hide straps but eventually the weakest dogs were killed to feed them all until all the dogs were gone. The two men reserved the dog's livers as the meat easiest to chew unaware that liver's toxins were slowly poisoning the men as they consumed it. Mertz became delirious and died. Mawson continued the soles of his feet separating and his toes and fingers festering. Miraculously he found a depot of food and arrived eventually at the main depot to see the ship departing on the horizon. He wintered over with the 6 men who had remained to continue the search. On Dec. 24 1913 their 2 year journey was finally over. The expedition would discover 1320 miles of land including the Mertz Denman and Scott Glaciers and the Davis Sea and map 800 miles of coastline between Gaussberg and Cape Adare all along the Adelie Land coast and beyond. Taurus 100; Rosove 217.A1; Spence 774; Conrad p208. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 5 kilogram. Category: Arctic & Antarctic; Exploration. The book is in the same format as Shackletons Heart of the Antarctic. Initially intending to be a member of Scotts party Mawson decided to command his own expedition the first official Australasian Antarctic Expedition. The former base was unfortunately located in an area of constant gale-force winds -- hence the title. In December 1912 a sledge party reached the South Magnetic Pole located by Eric Webb. Meanwhwile another party consisting of Mawson Ninnis and Mertz explored eastwards across George V Land. Only Mawson returned to base Ninnis having fallen down a crevasse and Mertz having died of starvation and compliications. The expedition would discover 1320 miles of land including the Mertz Denman and Scott Glaciers and the Davis Sea and map 800 miles of coastline between Gaussberg and Cape Adare all along the Adelie Land coast and beyond. Mawson's tale is one of the great stories of survival of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 2 kilogram.
