[IMAGINARY VOYAGE].
Holland 1672. Later blue/grey paper wrappers. 4to. With 2 thin rules on the title-page. Set in roman types with incidental italic. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his fictitious voyage and several years residence on a fictitious utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.l Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders Printed pandemonium pp. 195-199; STCN 863300111; not in Gove Imaginary voyages; Van Doorninck Vermomde en naamlooze schrijvers; Ford Isle of Pines 1668 1920; Scheckter Isle of Pines 1668 2011. unknown

[India]. Niekamp, Johann Lucas.
Kurtzgefasste Missions-Geschichte oder Historischer Auszug der Evangelischen Missions-Berichte aus Ost-Indien von den Jahr 1705 bis zu Ende des Jahres 1736 [...] mit einer Vorrede Herrn Gotthilf August Franckens [...]. Halle, (in Verlegung des Wäysen-Hauses), 1740.
4to. (22), 506, (54) pp. With title-page in red and black with engraved vignette, 2 engraved folding maps (the second crudely highlighted in colour by a later hand), 4 woodcut headpieces and 3 woodcut tailpieces. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, sewn on 6 cords, gold-tooled spine with a label in the 2nd of 7 compartments. First and only edition in the original German of an account of the Dänisch-Hallesche mission on the Carnatic coast in southeast India, from the beginning in 1705 to 1736. The Dänisch-Hallesche mission was the first Protestant mission and many resulting reports were published in the magazine Hallesche Berichte. Niekamp digested its first 44 chapters and organized them in two main parts: the first dealing with geography, inhabitants, languages etc. and the second treating the mission itself in chronological order; this if followed by a comprehensive index. The work contains a preface by Gotthilf August Francke, the son of the August Hermann Francke, who was one of the driving forces in the creation of the mission. - A Latin translation of the second part on the mission was published in 1747 and a complete French translation in 1755. A continuation was published by Michael Meier in 1771, covering the period 1736-1767. - The turn-ins caused some offsetting through the endpapers to the margins of the first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy, with only some occasional spots. The binding is rubbed with chips and superificial wear to the spine, but otherwise in good condition. German Africana 1928. Robert, Converting Colonialism (2008), pp. 26-28.

[India]. Norton, W[illiam] K.
My best photographs [cover title]. Benares, 1926.
18 stiff card leaves with 61 black and white photographs, adhesive mounted on both sides, with a few items of ephemera. All photos have detailed captions on applied small sheets of typescript. An album depicting India with an emphasis on Hindus engaged in religious rituals, many of which appear quite painful. It was created by a missionary in Benares, India, W. K. Norton, who deemed these images "self-torture". His goal in creating the album was to raise funds for the mission by showing "the great need the Hindu people are in for 'something better', that is found only in accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour". To further drive home the need for funds, one caption for a photo named "Devil Dancers in India" reads "worshiping the devil is a part of nearly all heathen religions". As of 1930, it seems Norton's fundraising efforts were suffering, as his newsletter included here shows that financial conditions were dire and that there was "a serious lack of interest which alarms us". - Around 25 photos show people engaged in self-suffering. These include men who held their arms above their heads for years, one who has moved his foot above his shoulder, and several which show people lying on beds of nails or spikes, including a young boy. Others show a man with his head buried in the ground, while another shows a man buried up to his head. One shows people lying on cacti, another shows a man who vowed he would never again lie down so he slept suspended by ropes under his arms. A couple show a man hanging by his feet, his head just over a fire. Two show a man getting hooked in his back and then suspended far above the ground to swing. Other views include street scenes in villages, people worshipping stone figures of snakes and the tulsi plant, and animal sacrifices. There are two shots of preparation for a cremation, one of a souvenir shop, another showing a crowd of thousands bathing in the Ganges, and more. Although more than one online reference states Norton was the photographer, four of the photos in the book are clearly commercial, and a few appear to be photographs of photographs. We know that Norton and his wife produced another original photograph book of 12 pages in the 1920s with two copies in institutions. OCLC locates no copies of this expanded work, but we note the online sales of two others since 2012 with 61 and 53 photographs respectively. - In very good condition: front wrapper with light foxing and surface abrasions, a couple of leaves with small stains; photos fine save for two with small losses. An outstanding album filled with arresting images, all described in great detail.

[Indien - Photographie].
Cawnpore. Marble Statue by Marochetti, Memorial Well. Kanpur, 1880er Jahre.
Albuminabzug (Vintage). 235:186 mm.

[ISHIBASHI GORO, GENERAL EDITOR].
Sekai Gensei Kaisetsu Chizu. Explanatory Maps of the Present State of the World.
Osaka Asahi Shinbunsha. Showa 12 1937. 10 colour maps not including insets or sketch maps in text on 12 pages. Handsome world map features as the centre fold colour pictorial paper wrappers. A little light soiling and horizontal crease wrappers. An attractive atlas. 38 x 26.7cm. A large format atlas with six pages of coloured maps showing the nations of the world and five pages of Japanese text. The publication seems to have been produced to celebrate the 1937 world record flight from Tokyo to London by Iinuma Masaaki and Tsugayoshi Kenji in their plane 'Kamikaze' which was sponsored by the Asahi Newspaper. The front cover depicts the plane soaring over a map of the world while the back cover also had a colour image of the 'Kamikaze' with an advertisement for the Oji Paper Company which we are told donated a hundred million yen to support the flight. The name 'Kamikaze" had at that stage not yet taken on the connotations which it acquired during the Pacific War.

The maps inside the volume show political boundaries major cities and transport routes. The opening pages show the Japanese Empire including Japan proper Korea Karufuto and Manchukuo with small insets covering Taiwan the Chishima Archipelago and Japan's South Sea mandate. The accompanying text focuses on Japan's newly acquired client state of Manchukuo detailing its area population principle products etc while the map includes graphs illustrating Japan's trade with the world and with Manchukuo. China receives an entry of its own with a map of the Chinese Republic and information on the political situation population trade and infrastructure. The central pages of the volume are taken up with a double-spread map of the world including depictions of the flags of a selection of the world's nations. Other sections of the work cover Asia Europe America Africa and Oceania grouped together. The discussion of Oceania includes a section on Hawaii and some small and improbable depictions of Maori and Indigenous Australians. . [Osaka Asahi Shinbunsha]. unknown
