‎Autographed Business Letter‎

‎New York 1846. unbound. 1 page 10 x 8 inches New York City December 8 1846. In this letter a salesman has booked travel for a favored client: "I have sent for you by the steam boat CHAMPION which leaves here this afternoon for New Haven marked as you directed by Springfield railroad with three kegs of printing ink." An interesting memento from the days when steamships were owned by the wealthy railroads who attempted to monopolize travel and trade. In this case the steamboat Champion actually the New Champion 1846 - 1851 would leave the Port of New York and set sail up the Long Island Sound eventually entering the Connecticut River bound for New Haven. The passenger could choose to sail as far up as Springfield Massachusetts or transfer for the much faster train at New Haven all owned by Hartford & New Haven Railroads. Several folds; small chip in the left margin. Very good condition.

unknown books‎

‎pp. (6) 279 + Six plates. Text somewhat foxed and soiled. 12mo. 195 mm. Original decorated full cloth binding; faded and somewhat worn, but still attractive. Large school prize plate from the Plymouth (England) School Board to Arthur Bradford, "For Regular and Punctual Attendance, 1893." Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) was a popular Flemish author who "possessed, to a high degree, the sense of the dramatic and pathetic. and had a wonderful power of grasping the picturesque side of things. rendering it with a rare felicity of expression." A fine tale of travel and adventures, with vignettes of: sea travel; mutiny; gold prospecting; gambling; ghosts; and even a lynching. ‎Longman Green and Co 1901. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Hardcover.Gift inscription to Rose Cecil Strickland from her father and mother 1st June 1901. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition 362pages black and white illustrations fold out genealogical tables. Green cloth with gilt titles and cut page edges boards with original bevelled edge. Heavy book so will incur extra charges for overseas delivery. Corners bumped and rubbed to spine edges. Contents clean. Swallowfield situated five and a half miles south-west from Reading has certainly been no exception to the proverbial skittishness since from the time of Edward the Confessor it has constantly cast its owners. In the Domesday Survey Berkshire is divided into twenty-two hundreds and we find mention of two hundred manors forty-six of which were vested in the Crown. Amongst the latter in the hundred of "Cereledone" or Charlton were "Selingefelle" now Shinfield and "Soanesfelt" or Swalfelle now Swallowfield which two manors appear not to have been separated till the year 1553. This is a rare and valuable book featuring the history of Swallowfield and its owners the Lady Russell. The hardback binding and 1st edition special attributes add to its collectable value. The book is sure to be a valuable addition to any collection of antiquarian books comics and magazines. The pages are in excellent shape and the cover is also well-maintained for its age. This book is a must-have for any collector or history enthusiast. Longman Green and Co Hardcover‎

‎A VOYAGE TOWARDS THE NORTH POLE UNDERTAKEN BY HIS MAJESTY’S COMMAND 1773‎

‎J. Nourse Bookseller to His Majesty 1773. First Edition. Calf. Fair/No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition; viii 254 pages. The valuable appendix gives geographical and meteorological observations zoological and botanical records accounts of the distillation of fresh water from the sea and astronomical observations. The voyage is perhaps best remembered for the presence of young Horatio Nelson as midshipman aboard the Carcass and his encounter with a polar bear' Hill 1351. Phipps's narrative of his voyage was of considerable scientific interest and was the beginning of modern efforts to reach the North Pole. It also made an important addition to the knowledge of the natural productions of Spitsbergen. The first British attempt to reach the North Pole since 1615. Today the expedition is chiefly remembered because among the midshipmen was one Horatio Nelson and during the voyage he had his famous encounter with the bear the skin of which young Horatio wished to carry to his father. Nelson was fortunate that Captain Lutwidge saw the danger he was in and scared the animal off by firing one of his cannon. The midshipman received a severe reprimand and in later years when Nelson had become a celebrated admiral the story was re-told by his early biographers as an example of his courage displayed at such a tender age.
