Bilderwelt-Kat. 505. - Das perforierte kleinere erste Blatt mit Erläuterungen fehlt wie meist. - Ernst Friedrich Sophus Hansen 1871-1959 ein Schüler Leopold von Kalckreuths hatte sich nach einer kurzen impressionistischen und pointillistischen Phase einer anderen Richtung zugewandt und u.a. Hans Leibl zu seinen Vorbildern gewählt. Hansen gewann 1907 einen Wettbewerb der Hamburger Lehrerschaft. Auftrag war ein Bilderbuch ohne Worte zu schaffen das Erstklässlern das Großstadtleben anschaulich vor Augen führt. Dafür suchte Hansen reizvolle Orte und Situationen aus: Schlittenfahren am Alsterhang einen Stau von Pferdefuhrwerken in der Innenstadt einen Orangenstand vor dem Hauptbahnhof Angeln unter einer Alsterbrücke mit Schwänen eine Parade Besuche bei Hagenbeck im Zirkus und auf dem Rummel Eislaufen auf der Alster u.a.m. - Die Hinweise auf Hamburg sind dezent aber nicht zu übersehen: ob das die Türme der Hauptkirchen im Hintergrund die Abfahrtshalle des Dammtorbahnhofs auf dem Schild ist nur "MMTOR" zu lesen der Rest wird durch den Dampf eines einfahrenden Zuges verdeckt oder der ebenfalls nur teilweise zu lesende "Hamburg"-Schriftzug auf einem Feuerwehrwagen sind. Dennoch ist dieses besonders schöne Jugendstil-Bilderbuch ein allgemein gültiges Kinderbuch über das Leben in einer Großstadt. Immer sind Kinder zu sehen; sehr oft sind sie im Vordergrund des Bildes mit von der Partie. - Einband berieben u. fleckig Ecken bestoßen obere Ecke des Buchblocks gestaucht innen etwas gebräunt Ränder leicht fingerfleckig Bl. 1 gering stockfleckig u. mit verso repariertem kl. Jacket complete and fairly attractive though edgeworn rubbed and edge chipped. A tight and lovely first edition of Hanson's second book a travelogue along the French river of World War One fame -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Hanson 1876-1960 1p 8½" X 11" Manassas Virginia 6 January 1955. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. Excellent content thanking Gates for the New York City Civil War Round Table newsletter he'd created. He agrees to send Gates flyers for his first Civil War book "Bull Run Remembers" and discusses some reviews it's gotten -- including that of John T. Winterich "who served with me on the original 'Stars and Stripes' in Paris in 1918-19." It was here and as a writer in Europe after WW1 that Hanson researched the Marne for this book. "The Civil War Round Table is to me the most interesting organization to which I belong -- of course I am a 'fan' on the subject. But there is a world of sturdy Americanism to be derived by anybody from study and discussion of the heroism and devotion of Americans of that era both North and South to their conceptions of their rights under the constitution which had been framed to implement a democracy. I think that today every American can get a better grip on the essentials of patriotism through familiarity with the intense efforts put forth by both sides in that struggle." A picture of this book is Griffin 263: 'An account based on Harcourt's colonizing voyage to Guiana in 1608-1609, reprinted from the 1613 first edition, but includes the additions made by Harcourt in the second edition. Another appendix contains a report on the Marwin (Maroni) River sent to Harcourt in about 1612. The Relation is useful for its ethnography, natural history and scheme for colonization.' Cox ii, 256: 'A valuable supplement to Raleigh's narrative of 1596.' National Maritime Museum 299. Sabin 30297, referring to the 1613 and 1626 editions:' Both editions are very rare'.
