Morrill, G L [Gulian Lansing]
Golightly 'Round The Globe
Chicago: M. A. Donohue & Co 1913. HB. Blindstamped blue cloth gilt lettering on front cover and spine 12mo 216 pp. Humorous account of this authors' travels. G.L. "Golightly" Morrill 1857-1928 received a degree in theology from the University of Chicago. He became a minister but gained national attention by breaking away from all established churches and founded an unorthodox "People's Church" in Minneapolis. He traveled widely and was the author of dozens of books. In his obituary in the Los Angeles Times it is noted "Probably the most unique funeral service ever conducted was held here today when the voice of Rev. G.L. "Golightly" Morrill was heard preaching his own funeral service. The words were heard over the body of the noted writer and world traveler in a local funeral parlor this morning. They issued from a phonograph which was playing a record dictated by Morrill himself months ago in preparation for his final rites. After the sermon another record was placed on the machine and Morrill's voice was heard singing a religious song." He picked up the nickname "Golightly" from an an associate who told him the Baptist Church officials were getting uneasy about his church services where he told jokes had musicians drummers slide projected images and Hula Dancers. The associate told him he had better "go lightly" in the future. GL did not change his methods but did adopt "Golightly" as his pen-name. Illustrated with sketches and photos by Lowell L. Morrill. Some penciled bracketing of text binding tight. Spine lightly sunned faint soiling rear cover. Book condition VG-. M. A. Donohue & Co hardcover

Notes by a Naturalist on the Challenger; being an Account of Observations Made During the Voyage of H. M. S. Challenger Round the World in the Years 1872-1876 Under the Command of Capt. Sir G. S. Nares and Capt. F. T. Thomson
8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xvi, 620, [iv, ads] pp, colored plates including frontis, folding color map, numerous illus, bibliog, index. original brown cloth, gilt title lettering on spine, lower edge lightly rubbed, interior hinge cracked but firm, light foxing on some leaves, mostly marginal, very good copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Ferguson 12883. Spence 820. British Museum Natural History Catalogue 1359. Wood 473. The Challenger expedition was one of the largest and most important natural history projects of the nineteenth century, and traveled extensively in the Atlantic and the Pacific. 'Without considerable reservation, Wyville Thompson's narrative cannot be recommended for general reading; but Moseley's Notes unequivocally can because Moseley, who was as dedicated a naturalist as Thomson, also had a perceptually inquisitive mind that looked for more' (Linklater, The Voyage of the Challenger, 1972). A fascinating and important work, first published in 1879. 'Of all his writings, Moseley's Notes of a Naturalist on the Challenger, is the one that appeals to the widest circle of readers and approaches Darwin's Journal of the Cruise of the Beagle in interest and importance' [DNB]. The work is dedicated to Charles Darwin.

The Broads New Naturalist 89
London: Harper Collins 2001. First edition. Illustrated large 8vo pp 392 a very good new copy in an unfaded dustwrapper. This book gives a comprehensive account of the history of the Broads an area of great interest to natural historians and tourists alike. Broadland is set mostly in Norfolk and partly in Suffolk. The peat deposits in Broadland were dug in many places mainly during the 9th to 13th centuries. The pits eventually filled with water giving us the Broads 190 km of navigable water unimpeded by dams or locks. Before the Second World War Broadland was the epitome of richness of water plants and their associated animals and was of international importance as a diverse wetland. Sadly much of the richness has now gone and the significance of Broadland lies more now in its significance in environmental restoration. The problems faced by the Broads are being experienced world-wide and devising ways in which the Broads may be managed to restore the previous richness has produced a strategy of value throughout the world. This book discusses the history of the Broads the waters in the past and the waters now the people who come into contact with and influence these waterways and what the future holds for this small but important area of the countryside. First Edition. Cloth. New/New. Harper Collins Hardcover
