With 32p publisher's catalogue (dated January 1898 and partially unopened) bound in at end. Quite apart from its scientific value, Darwin's first published work (1839) is an important travel work in its own right. This is essentially a re-issue of Murray's 1890 edition (Freeman 28) with the postscript incorporated in the text, but preserving the gilt 'rhea' hunt on upper board and gilt '3/6' on backstrip first seen in the 1889 edition (Freeman 21). In addition Captain Fitzroy's name is reset as 'Fitz Roy' on title. Freeman (Darwin), 49.

Les éditeurs proposaient, pour compléter l'ouvrage, deux cartes vendues séparément, qui manquent à cet exemplaire. Tailliart 1138. Officier de cavalerie, Daumas 1803 - 1871 prit part aux campagnes de Mascara et de Tlemcen. Arabisant, il fut Consul à Mascara, auprès de l’émir Abd El-Kader de 1837 à 1839, puis dirigea et réorganisa l'administration des bureaux arabes de 1841 à 1847. A l’instigation de Bugeaud, il compose le Sahara algérien à partir de très nombreux témoignages indigènes et à l’appui d’une considérable documentation, préparant ainsi le terrain à l’exploration du désert. Un document de première ordre.
