Langlès est également responsable des diverses notes et du mémoire sur les oasis, composé d'après les auteurs arabes. Une autre édition française parue en 1802 et fut faite d'après la traduction anglaise, fautive. Introduction par William Young, président de la Société Africaine de Londres. Plusieurs mémoires viennent enrichir l'édition : Eclaicissements sur la géographie de l'Afrique par Rennel. Mémoire sur les oasis. Observations sur la langue de Syouah. Notice sur la langue berbère (Conjugaison, grammaire, vocabulaire). Reliure en demi veau vert d'époque. Dos lisse orné. Titre doré. Fente au mors inférieur en tête sur 3 cm. Pertes de papier marbré sur le plat inférieur. Bon exemplaire, bien frais. Hornemann se mit au service de la Société Africaine de Londres avec pour mission de parachever la découverte de l'Afrique du nord par l'Egypte. Après avoir appris l'Arabe, il se rendit au Caire et rencontra le Général Bonaparte qui lui facilita son entrée en Afrique du nord. Se faisant passer pour un marchand mahométan, il joignit une caravane en 1798, ce qui lui permit d'atteindre les oasis de Siwa, Aujilla et Mourzouq. il y vécut jusqu'en juin 1799, puis il rejoignit Tripoli d'où il expédia le récit de ses aventures à Londres. Le consul britannique à Tripoli fut amené à penser qu'en juin 1803, Hornemann était à Caina (Katsina), dans le Nord du Nigeria, en bonne santé et vénéré comme marabout. Un rapport dira plus tard (en 1819) que l'explorateur s'était rendu parmi le peuple Nupe, où il était mort. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]

Robinson 283: 'Dora Hort was forceful, outspoken and blessed with a sublime sense of self-importance. An American whose travel book for some reason were published only in London', until this recent reprint, making it the first American edition, if a trifle late. She travelled from New York to San Francisco, via Nicaragua, with much of the description of her experiences and especially with her struggle to complete the trip, its hardships, including the journey mainly by horseback through Nicaragua.

This is a military communication from the Department of the Army which was forwarded to the Department of the Air Force to be disseminated further down the chain. The communication has a green paper covers and a single staple at the top left corner. The communication is in Very Good- condition overall. The front cover has several long tears wear and one circular chip to the front foredge. The rear cover is clean and bright and the text pages are generally clean copied photocopy mimeo etc - style pages. Under the cover letters is an article by Marilyn W. Hoskins called Building Rapport with the Vietnamese and was used to help members of the Air Force " it is necessary that all assigned personnel familiarize themselves with Vietnamese customs and cultural backgrounds" and also "to advise and assist the Vietnamese Air Force in it's effort towards Self-Sufficiency" from the top cover letter. . Deux agens de la Société établie en Angleterre, pour favoriser les progrès des découvertes dans cette partie du Monde. Rédigés par le Comité de la Société, et publiés à son ordre, avec trois cartes et des éclaircissements sur la géographie d'Afrique, par le Major Rennel. A Paris, chez Tavernier (An VI [1798]). Suivi de: HORNEMAN (Frédéric). Voyages dans l'intérieur de l'Afrique pendant les années 1797, 1798. Traduit de l'Anglais. A Paris, chez André (An XI - 1802). 1 volume in-8 de (8)+243 pages et LVI+390 pages, reliure en demi-veau blond, pièces de titre et de tomaisons (le 1er cahier de HOUGHTON et MUNGO-PARK est relié après le 2ème, une des cartes est déchirée à moitié et remplacée par un fac-similé, un autre carte est restaurée avec mouillures, quelques frottements d'usage, fissure sur 1 cm du plat inférieur). Ex-libris sur contreplat. Edition originale française de ces deux rares ouvrages. La traduction française des lettres de Houghton, qui avaient paru en 1793 en Angleterre, est faite par Lallemant. Daniel Houghton (1740-1791) avait été chargé par l'African Association de se rendre en Afrique pour tenter de déterminer la source du fleuve Niger et de visiter les villes de Tombouctou et de Houssa. Il ne réussit pas à mener à bien sa mission et périt alors qu'il essayait de pénétrer au Soudan occidental. Il fut remplacé par Mungo-Park (1771-1806) qui devint le premier occidental à explorer le Niger et dont on trouve la relation dans la seconde partie de cet ouvrage. Frédéric Hornemann (1772-1801) offrit ses services à l'African Association en 1796. Il atteignit l'oasis de Siwa, puis Aujila et enfin Mourzouq en 1798. Hornemann y vécut jusqu'en juin 1799, rejoignant ensuite Tripoli pour expédier au mois d'août son journal à Londres. Il disparut ensuite.
