Rousseurs aux pages de faux-titres et titres, des 2 volumes, sinon très bon exemplaire.‎ ‎Édition originale de l'un des premiers grands récits de voyage au Japon en français. Cet ouvrage a d'abord paru en feuilleton dans la revue "Le Tour du Monde" à partir de 1866. Il est remarquablement illustré de 5 plans en couleurs de Kyoto, Osaka, Yedo (dépliant), Asaksa Imato et Yokohama, et d'une grande carte du Japon, de deux planches représentant des spécimens de syllabaires japonais (Katakana et Hirakana) ainsi que de 476 illustrations sur bois dans le texte et hors-texte. (Cordier, Japonica, 670). Aimé Humbert (1819-1900), homme politique suisse, fut envoyé par son pays en mission diplomatique au Japon en novembre 1862. Il profita de son long séjour pour établir un panorama complet de ce pays. Les illustrations réalisés d'après des croquis et des photographies, mais aussi d'après des estampes japonaises du temps, en font un témoignage rare du Japon à l'époque de la décadence des mikado. Curieux de tout, il se livre à des expériences sur l'électricité et sur la météorolie. Il s'installe à Paris en 1797 puis il entreprend un voyage d'exploration en Amérique du Sud avec le botaniste français Bonpland, notamment en Amazonie puis à Cuba, au Pérou et dans les Andes, au Mexique et enfin aux états Unis. Après cinq années (1799-1804) passées à amasser des matériaux de toutes sortes dans de nombreux domaines (botanique, zoologie, climatologie, géographie, cartographie, géologie, etc....), ils regagnent Paris, qui est alors une grande capitale scientifique. Humboldt est alors considéré comme une encyclopédie vivante et fréquente Berthollet, Laplace, Gay-Lussac, etc. En 1826, il est obligé de rentrer en Prusse. Il ne se plaît pas beaucoup et entreprend, dès 1827, un voyage d'exploration dans l'Oural et en Sibérie. Son Cosmos est le véritable condensé et la lumineuse synthèse des connaissances humaines de l'époque sur la géographie et les phénomènes physiques inter-dépendants qui font de lui le créateur de la météorologie moderne, de la géophysique, l'inspirateur de Darwin de vin Buch et Agassiz, il fut aussi le père spirituel du Canal de Panama et c'est son tracé que retint Ferdinand de Lesseps. Humboldt fut aussi un philosophe largement inspiré des lumières qui l'amenèrent à combattre l'esclavage et à promouvoir l'instruction publique. Curious about everything, he carried out experiments on electricity and meteorology. He settled in Paris in 1797 and then undertook a voyage of exploration in South America with the French botanist Bonpland, notably in the Amazon, then in Cuba, Peru and the Andes, Mexico and finally the United States. After five years (1799-1804) spent collecting materials of all kinds in many fields (botany, zoology, climatology, geography, cartography, geology, etc.), they returned to Paris, which was then a great scientific capital. Schoell, A Paris 1811, In-8 (12,5x20,8cm), 5 volumes reliés. - Première édition in-8 qui suit de près l'originale parue au format in-4, laquelle contient un atlas. Un tableau physique dépliant de la Nouvelle-Espagne, la carte dépliante est absente. Dans le tome I, 5 feuillets manquants ont été remplacés par des feuilles vierges à l'époque, de la p.435 à 446 ; ils concernent le chapitre VI sur le degré de civilisation des Indiens. Dans le tome 2, 6 feuillets manquants également remplacés par 6 feuillets vierges, de la p.3 à 14 ; ils concernent le chapitreé VII sur les créoles, les blancs et les Indiens. Ces feuillets étaient malheureusement absents lors de la reliure à l'époque, vers 1811. Reliure en pleine basane blonde racinée d'époque. Dos lisse orné de 2 fleurons et d'une partie centrale à la grotesque, roulette en queue et tête et en place des nerfs. Pièces de titre de veau rouge,; pièces de tomaison de veau vert. Frise d'encadrement sur les plats. Mors supérieur ouvert en queue au tome 1 sur 1,5cm. Premier feuillet de l'index du tome I restauré maladroitement en coin. Les 3 premiers feuillets du tome 2, faux-titre, titre et première page texte avec une déchirure restaurée (un manque en page de titre restauré), avec un décalage des lettres pour le texte. Au tome 5, les 2 derniers feuillets, un d'index, l'autre de publicité concernant les voyages de Humboldt portent de larges taches rousses en marge basse. Au tome 3, trace de mouillure pâle en marge haute sur le troisième feuillet. Petite trace de mouillure jaune sur les premiers feuillets du tome 4, au coin en marge haute ; sinon exemplaire bien frais dans l'ensemble. Etat descriptif le plus complet paru jusqu'alors sur la Nouvelle-Espagne, qui comprend alors non seulement le Mexique, mais également la Californie, le Nouveau Mexique, et le Texas. En compagnie du naturaliste français Aimé Bonpland, Humboldt sera présenté au roi d'Espagne Charles VI qui lui fournira papiers et permissions pour se rendre dans les colonies espagnoles. Ils partent de La Corogne le 5 juin 1799 et Humboldt ne reviendra en France qu'en 1804. Récit très important pour la connaissance de la Californie. Nachdem die erste Übersetzung von Humboldts Bericht über die "in den Jahren 1799-1804 in Gesellschaft von Bonpland unternommene Reise in das tropische Amerika" durch Therese Huber und ihren Sohn Victor Aime als "gänzlich verfehlt" angesehen werden mußte, hat Cotta den Bruder Wilhelm Hauffs beauftragt, eine neue Bearbeitung unter Mitwirkung des Autors zu erstellen. Humboldts "Mitarbeit" beschränkt sich allerdings nur auf das kurz vor seinem Tode verfasste "Vorwort". Den von Hauff vorgenommenen Kürzungen stimmte Humboldt zugunsten eines besseren Leseflusses zu.
