C'est en 1838 que s'était ouvert à Philadelphie le "Chinese Museum", au premier niveau du Musée de Charles Willson Peale, sur la base des objets rapportés de Chine par le négociant quaker Nathan Dunn (1782-1844), revenu d'un long séjour commercial à Canton (1818-1832). L'ensemble de cette collection fut montrée également à Londres en 1842, puis, après la mort de Dunn, en 1851, la seconde fois avec beaucoup moins de succès. Important document concernant l'histoire du Canada et des États-Unis, l'ouvrage commence par s'interroger sur les causes du conflit entre la Grande-Bretagne et la France concernant le territoire de l'Ohio. En 1756, c'est le début de la Guerre de Sept ans, ou Indian War, guerre de conquête pour une occupation légitime des territoires; cette guerre essaimera de Virginie et de la Nouvelle-Écosse à toute la région des lacs au Canada, certains Indiens combattirent aux côtés des Anglais, d'autres avec les Français. Shebbeare revient sur les défaites anglaises, sur la mauvaise politique et les généraux présents au Canada, l'intervention de la milice américaine et Washington.
