[China - Beijing: Khanbaliq]. Flemish / Dutch school.

Woodcut ovoid roundel (60 x 75 mm), contemporarily trimmed to just outside neatline and contemporarily mounted to a larger sheet of paper (in excellent condition). One of the earliest printed views of what is today Beijing: an unrecorded bird's eye prospect over 'Cambalu', or Khanbaliq (on the site of modern Beijing), the capital of China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Yuan Dynasty was founded by the legendary Mongol warrior Kublai Khan, who after conquering China proclaimed his new capital at Khanbaliq, although the city would not be completed until 1293. During the succeeding Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Khanbaliq was transformed into what is known as Beijing. Interestingly, as seen in the view, the walled rectangular form of the old city of Beijing is already evident in the design of Khanbaliq. Marco Polo visited Khanbaliq, but his description of its location was vague. For over two centuries thereafter Europeans were confused as to not only the location of "Cambaluc", but they even sometimes confused its identify with "Cathay" (China), thinking that it was the name for the entire country. This confusion was cleared up by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci during his first visit to Beijing in 1598, when he definitively identified Khanbaliq as the precursor to the modern Chinese capital. The present work is one of a series of 26 woodcut roundels of views and maps that were found together as collection. Charming, mysterious and apparently unique, in the absence of any accompanying documentation we are left to make educated guesses about their genesis. By all appearances they seem to be late 16th or early 17th century Flemish or Dutch woodcuts, probably proofs for vignettes to adorn the sides of an unrealized copper-engraved wall map (or maps). Indeed, this period saw the beginnings of the "carte à figures" wall maps that became all the rage during the 17th century, and which occupied an iconic place in the art world of the Low Countries. In the fluid and fast-paced environment of the large European print shops, it was common for artists to experiment with designs for copperplate maps by making woodcut proofs, as carving into wood was much quicker and cheaper. Only if the design was accepted for publication was it engraved into copper (an expensive and demanding process). The views within the roundels were generally predicated on the most authoritative recent sources. Many of the views are based on those published within the first four volumes of Braun & Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (6 vols., 1572-1618), the first great "town book", featuring bird's eye views of cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Inspired by Ortelius's ground-breaking world atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terraum" (1570), which featured all of the world's known regions in detail, this monumental endeavour featured 546 views and maps of cities. The views from the "Civitates" are imbued with profound historical importance as, in many cases, they are the first accurate and detailed views of many great cities and towns, and were the most popular and influential images of these urban centres available to Europeans during the late 16th and much of the 17th centuries. Other fantastic sources include Jan van Linschoten's "Itinerario" (Amsterdam, 1596), one of the most consequential books ever written, responsible for breaking the Portuguese monopoly on European trade in South and East Asia. Likewise, other views were borrowed from important and pioneering 16th century prints and manuscripts. The unknown maker of the set of roundels to which the present view belongs likely intended for them to serve as proofs for the vignettes adorning the sides of an intended "carte à figures" wall map (or more likely maps). The creation of such woodcut proofs was commonplace, although very few examples survive to this day, as most were destroyed once their incidental use had transpired. In any event, these woodcut roundels are a fascinating insight into the operations of a large cartographic workshop in the late 16th century.

Original printed grey waxed paper wrappers with cloth-reinforced spine edges, screw-bound. Rare CIA-produced atlas of the People's Republic a decade after the "loss of China", at the onset of the country's "Great Leap Forward". It was designed to provide U.S. analysts with "fuller information on Communist adminstrative units" and to aid their interpretation of data emanating from the PRC, of "its statistical reporting, and the complexity of the administrative structure". The names of counties, districts, and municipalities are listed in the margin of each provincial map in Chinese and English. As the editors write in their introduction, the "catastrophic overhaul now in progress requires that the atlas be provisional in content and economical in format". Curiously, the 25 provincial maps are larger-scale reproductions from a 1956 Communist Chinese school atlas, the pocket-size "Chung-kuo fen-sheng ti-t’u" ("Provincial Atlas of a China"), with additional Agency annotations, while the "maps give place names, hsien (county) seats, and some hydrography and roads. The accompanying marginal lists [...] are based on the '1957 Handbook of Administrative Subdivisions of the PRC' (Chung-hua jenmin kung-ho-kuo hsing-cheng ch’ü-hua chien-ts’e) which lists and indexes all administrative units at the hsien level and above as of 1 January 1957." - Maps, captions, and index are carefully coordinated by the editors, including tables of comparative keys to the Wade-Giles, Yale, and the then-new Pinyin romanization system as well as of the standard abbreviations of Chinese characters. A prefixed letter-sized typescript advises readers that the atlas is not intended foremost to convey topographical information, but rather "to aid research workers faced with problems of interpreting current information on Communist China in the light of its complex administrational structure", and requests recipients who find it "does not serve their needs" to return it ("because of the expense involved in the production of the atlas and the limited size of the edition") to the CIA's Record Center at the old CIA Headquarters in the E Street complex of Washington, DC. - A very light waterstain to the upper edge throughout; insignificant wrinkling, more pronounced in upper cover, which also shows light scuff marks and tiny loss to the lower right corner. Rare and impressive photograph made by the very first photographer of Yosemite and featuring one of the pioneers of ecology. The American photographer Carleton Watkins first came to Yosemite in 1861 with his "mammoth" camera, where he took an impressive series of views of the valley. It was partly because of his splendid photographs that President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Valley Grant Act on June 30, 1864, declaring the site protected and thus initiating the national park service. Watkins continued to take photographs of Yosemite Valley and became acquainted with Galen Clark, pictured here at the foot of the 300-year-old "Grizzly Giant" redwood. Born in Quebec and carried away like many of his compatriots by the California gold rush, Galen Clark - whose doctor gave him no more than six months to live - was the first Westerner to discover the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees. He never left the grove, becoming its first guardian in 1864 and remaining there for twenty-four years. Although Yosemite Valley attracted artists and wealthy travelers as early as the 1850s, Watkins' images did much to promote the site, especially after the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. Watkins presented his photographs (displayed in redwood frames...) at the Paris World's Fair in 1867. They are now preserved in major American institutions such as the MoMa, the Getty Museum and the MET. Public appetite for a detailed narrative encouraged a publishing race of which this work published less than three months after the expedition's return to England and almost two years prior to Hawkesworth's authorised version was the winner. This first issue containing the dedication leaf was swiftly withdrawn following the publicly advertised consternation of the dedicatees the Admiralty Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Published anonymously the work is generally attributed to James Magra an American mid-shipman aboard. First edition first issue; 4to 30.75 x 25 cm 4102 2 errata pp. uncut in original boards neatly rebacked to style light brown stain to inner upper quarter of pages through to C1 spotting to last 6 pages overall a super rarity in very good condition well preserved in modern blue cloth box red morocco label.<br /> The rarest of all the surreptitious accounts of Cook's voyages issued with a title phrased to mislead the public into believing it to be Cook's own account it was initially accepted as an authentic account but the book was quickly exposed and denounced.<br /><br />Following the return of the Third Voyage with news of Cook's death in 1780 and the subsequent heightened public interest in Cook the original title-leaf was cancelled and replaced by a rephrased title-page with a new date now attributing authorship to 'An Officer on Board'. This ploy seems also to have been unsuccessful – the public was interested in the Third Voyage – and consequently that second issue is as rare as the first.<br /><br />Beaglehole remarks that 'it recounts a few incidents not otherwise known which do not seem out of key with the voyage as a whole' but goes on to say that 'the rest is so palpably fake and in the most sensational terms that it must be regarded as original invention – on the basis perhaps of a reading of Marra or conversation with a stray sailor.'. Georg Forster declared that it was the work of a Cambridge undergraduate and subsequent opinion has tended to echo contemporary sentiment. Nevertheless Renard ventures that the account derives 'from the journal of one of the officers on board' while it has even been suggested that the journal of Lieutenant Pickersgill may have been the source. <br /><br />ESTC lists just sixteen copies worldwide of which only three are in the UK BL two copies Suffolk Record Office.<br /> Beddie 1245; Davidson Collection 83 second issue; Hill 1545; Holmes 39; Kroepelien 1172; cf.
