L'expédition Ryckmans - Philby - Lippens est une expédition scientifique belge effectuée en 1951 en Arabie par l'Université catholique de Louvain, sous les auspices du roi Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud. Unique en son genre, elle dura trois mois et eût pour objectif de trouver, photographier et analyser un grand nombre d'inscriptions et de pétroglyphes d'époque pré-islamique, encore très peu étudiés à l'époque. L'itinéraire de l'expédition traversa le désert de Djeddah à Riyadh, sur plus de 5400 kilomètres, reliant puits et anciennes routes caravanières. Third Edition on laid paper with frontispiece 34 plates on 28 and large folding coloured map neatly repaired on inner surface at folds at rear neat contemporary signature on half-title; original pictorial cloth upper board blocked in red and black backstrip lettered in black gilt top uncut expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down a very good bright clean crisp copy. The author's record of a two month's journey from Shanghai to Chung-king with perceptive and detailed observations on the revolution trade imports exports taxation and other commercial aspects. In addition Little makes copious notes on the geography flora and fauna commercial and cultural activities and historical contexts. Through his journey he argues for the voyage to be repeated by steamship a venture not realised until he himself attempted it in a tiny steamboat some fifteen years later. This best and considerably extended edition includes in the final chapter an account of his remarkable achievement. VERY SCARCE ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.
