‎[Textiles.] Nanbenya Jûzô.‎

‎Nanbenya Jûzô: Komon cho [Collection of fine patterns]. Japan, Edo period (first half of 18th century).‎

‎Large 4to (193 × 287 mm). "Komon" patterns for cloth or paper designs. 13 ff. with 159 (but: 156) katazome-dyed paper pattern sheets numbered and captioned by hand. Japanese block stitching in indigo wrappers and ms. cover label. The inside front cover has a ms. note providing the name and address of the seller or manufacturer: "Minato Onochô itchôme - Nanbenya Jûzô". The borders of the specimen sheets are fashioned by re-using an older manuscript. - "Komon" is a Japanese pattern dye style based on especially minutely patterned all-over designs. The intricacy of this style originated in 16th century Japan, when it served to decorate the "kami-shimo", or official Samurai garments, and the clothes of the Shogun's family and of some Daimyos. Occasionally, these would even have privileged ("forbidden") designs (so-called "tomegara") which nobody else could wear. Until well into the 19th century, the production of and trade in such "komon" patterns was subject to a special monitoring system. Since the end of the 18th century the patterns were increasingly used by the urban population. Due to the extreme costliness of their manufacture, such garments were worn mainly on semi-official occasions, especially for private ceremonies and celebrations. The patterns, distinguished by their superior delicacy and minute detail, are produced with the help of wax paste and paper stencils ("kata-gami-zome" or "katazome"; cf. Klein-Bednay, Japanische Musterbücher des 18. und 19. Jhs., in: Von Morris bis Memphis, p. 359). - Compared with five similar pattern books in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dated "ca. 1680" and "ca. 1700", the present specimen shows a wider range of basic colours, while some designs are slightly less intricate. In all other respects, however - such as the arrangement of the pages, the materials use, the size and the scope - show evident parallels, while the 19th century katazome pattern books or other 19th century textile design collections differ markedly. - Binding rubbed; lower wrapper and 3 leaves show slight worming near the gutter. Cf. Metropolitan Museum of Art - Digital Collections, Identifier nos. 23.88.5 through 23.88.8 and 23.88.10.‎

1 vol. 12mo manuscript (230 x 170 mm) of : [1] f. (title); 180 pp. Ex libris of Baron Martineau des Chesnes pasted to spine of front cover. Full shagreened calf, spine ribbed and titled, double framed with two gilt fillets and motifs on the covers, marbled paper endpapers (Binding rubbed, split at the jaws and missing a headpiece). Impressive handwritten treatise on the political and cultural situation of the world, written in 1651 by Baptiste du Chastiller. The work is written entirely in black ink in a small but still legible script. In this imposing treatise, the author covers the entire world known to Europeans at the time. It covers Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Each continent is dealt with through the prism of its political situation, i.e. the various kingdoms, republics, principalities and provinces found there. These are also dealt with in detail in terms of their constituent regions, where these are known. In this respect, Europe and especially France are logically particularly well developed. When it comes to a part of the world that is well known to Europeans, the following themes are developed: government, currency, inhabitants, religion, language, customs, etc. As the work aims to cover the whole of the known world at the time, each section is nevertheless succinct. The author concludes this colossal work by declaring: "I () humbly and wholeheartedly submit this present book as my writing to the censure or to the () of the Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church, which can only judge it as being the congregation of the faithful governed by the Holy Spirit and in which, by the grace of God, I wish to live and die, as () in which it can make its salvation and reach the heavenly and divine ()". A remarkable work, well preserved in its original binding.‎

‎London: John Murray. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1826. First Edition. Leather. 4to 11.5"; 2 volumes in one 4to 268 x 211 mm. Engraved frontispiece 32 engraved plates one hand-colored 11 in-text woodcut illustrations 2 plans 6 engraved maps 5 full-page one folding. Some occasional spotting or offsetting. Modern half calf over green cloth gilt smooth spine gilt 3 black morocco lettering-pieces gilt edges faintly marbled marbled endsheets chipping to lettering-piece some small scuffs. Provenance: W. Conway signature. FIRST EDITION of important explorations in Africa. The first volume is an official expedition to discover the course of the Niger from the starting point of Tripoli rather than West Africa. Clapperton and Oudney were the original members of the party to which Denham was added but whose "arrogance malice and contempt for his colleagues from the start soured relations between them" DNB. This famous "Bornu Mission" provided the earliest European report on the Central Sudan and Northern Nigeria. From the Mediterranean they reached Murzuk and Bornu on the west of Lake Chad and eventually Sokota. Failing to ascertain the source and termination of the Niger Denham explored Lake Chad and Oudney and Clapperton journeyed westward to the Niger. Clapperton continued alone after Oudney's death at Murmur reaching Sokota and rejoining Denham at Kuka. On the second expedition Clapperton had been promoted to Commander and was sent back to Sokota to open up trade with the west coast. He died in 1827 having crossed Yoruba Country and the Niger. He was survived by his "servant" Richard Lander who carried on alone. Lander brought Clapperton's journals back to England and wrote the "Life of Clapperton" which appears in this second work. ‎Relacion del viage de la Señora Reina de Ungria y alegrissimo recebimiento que la cesare magestad del Señor Emperador de Alemania y Rey de Ungria su esposo le hizieron en primero de março de 1631.‎

‎Seville 1631. Folio. Simon Faxardo With the engraved Spanish royal coat of arms and a woodcut decorated initial both on the first leaf. 4 pp. An account of the Spanish Infanta Maria Anna’s 1606-46 journey to Vienna to marry Prince Ferdinand King of Hungary and Bohemia and future Holy Roman Emperor. This tract describes the final leg of the journey Maria Anna having originally set out from Madrid in 1629 from Naples across the Papal States to Ancona where she was received on board a Venetian squadron and sailed along the Adriatic coast to Trieste. At Trieste she was met by Archduke Leopold and then travelled overland to Vienna. On her arrival she celebrated her marriage to Ferdinand on 20 February 1631. Maria Anna was considered intelligent and capable and after Ferdinand became Holy Roman Emperor she regularly governed in his place when he was away on military campaigns. The union which further cemented the ties between the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs was cause for celebration in the Iberian peninsula where this tract published in Seville in the same year as the marriage was evidently issued to spread the news of the happy event. Its nature as popular newsletter most likely explains its rarity. With contemporary manuscript foliation in the upper outer corners of the leaves "449" and "450". Unstitched and edges untrimmed scattered foxing else very good.l Palau 257999; USTC 5012456 5 copies; WorldCat 928677536 2 copies. unknown‎
