LIV [of LVI, lacking half-title], 444 pp. (2), 344, (148) pp. With engr. frontispiece portrait of Mariner by Bragg after Mouchet, and a folding engraved map of the Tonga Islands. 19th century half calf. Second enlarged edition. The young William Mariner sailed in the privateer Porte au Prince to the New World with the objective of attacking Spanish ships and searching for whales. The crew seized several Spanish vessels and picked up a number of Hawaiian crew in 1806. A visit to the Tonga Islands proved fatal: almost the entire the crew was massacred by the natives. The author, however, survived and lived in the 'Friendly Islands' from circa 1806 until 1810, observing and recording the Tonga culture with a keen eye for detail. His account contains an elaborate dictionary and grammar of the Tonga language as well as several songs. Volume two, moreover, includes some interesting notes on James Cook, who had named the Tonga Islands the Friendly Islands in remembrance of the friendly reception accorded to him and his crew. Mariner states that the Tonga chiefs had in fact planned to kill Cook, but due to a disagreement on "the exact mode and time of making the assault" (p. 60) this plan was never executed. "Mariner's meticulous observations on Tonga make this a key historical text on the history and culture of this island group" (Forbes). - With inscription on endpapers and title pages; vol. 1 lacking half-title; spines chafed. The ink inscription on the title page by Markham reads, 'Charles C. Bowen with the translator's affectionate regards, Dec 9th, 1864'. This is the 33rd publication of the first series of the Hakluyt Society and includes Markham's translation of the original edition printed in Antwerp in 1554 as well as his detailed 40 page introduction that provides a good historical perspective and biographical details of Cieza de Leon. Markham had become an expert on Peru and on the native peoples there, having researched and written several works on the subject. Cieza de Leon's work provides an important reference of the time. He was the first European to give a name to the avocado and likely the first to write of the potato, which would be introduced to Europe. His was the first account of the Spanish conquest of Peru and provides details on the Incas, their customs, institutions, beliefs, economy, military. He was a sympathetic observer of the Spanish caused carnage and provides a valuable first-hand account of the area and the peoples.

This edition includes the appendices of the programs of entertainment of the crews, the table of game, etc, but was omitted in later editions. This copy includes the two double page color plates of crews and flags of the spring and autumn sledges, not included with all copies. Arctic Bibliog 10926: 'The author commanded the Alert during the British Arctic Expedition under Nares to the North Polar Sea, wintering at Cape Sheridan, North Ellesmer Island. . . His narrative contains detailed account of the passage through the ice from Smith Sound northward, wintering the ship, entertaining the crew, itineraries'.

8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; 2 volumes, xlv, 295; xiii, [295] - 551 pp, index. original blue blind-stamped cloth, gilt vignette, gilt spine title lettering, spines a little faded and bit worn at edges, rear endpaper of volume I pasted down, very good, clean copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. 'It contains an exposition of the ideas of learned men of the sixteenth century on physical geography, and it is one of the leading authorities on the ancient civilizations of Peru and Mexico.. . . The Natural History of Acosta has been much used by subsequent writers on Peru and Mexico.' [Introduction]. Markham provides a good historical introduction to the work. Volume I is devoted to the natural history of the regions with considerable detail. Volume II is on the customs, beliefs, festivals, ceremonies, etc, of the native peoples.

Based on the original manuscript and first published here, the author describes his 'adventures in Spain, Italy, Sicily, Germany, Flanders, the Balearic Isles and Peru and is one of the very few works in which the feuds of the Pizarros and Amagro are described by an eye witness. . . it had escaped the notice of Prescott and others who have written on Peru' [from the introduction which provides a good historical perspective]. This is from the Hakluyt Society first series, scarce in any condition.
