Very rare separately published editions of two articles, accompanying the first and second sheet of an equally rare hydrographic chart published in 1843 and 1846 by the Dutch cartographer and hydrographer Pieter baron Melvill van Carnbée (1816-1856). The chart was published in three sheets showing the waters between Sumatra and Borneo, the first two sheets, discussed here, cover the waters around the Riau Islands, the Lingga Islands and Singapore and the South China Sea. - The texts open with a brief introduction, a cartobibliography (printed and manuscript maps) and a general bibliography. The main texts note and comment on the coordinates of different places given by various sources, and include many of the small islands, cliffs and shoals in these waters. The first article ends with a table giving different spellings of geographical names in English/Dutch and Malay. - The articles were originally published in "Verhandelingen en berigten betrekkelijk het zeewezen en de zeevaartkunde". - With library stamps of the Royal Danish maritime library ("Marinens Bibliotek"). Edition à la date de l’originale de cet ouvrage donné pour une traduction de l'allemand Pfeil, que Léon Béclard le biographe de Mercier, tout comme ses contemporains, identifie comme une "oeuvre personnelle authentique". L'auteur se prononce avec originalité sur l'état de nature, en marquant ses différences par rapport à Rousseau et en parvenant à une conclusion analogue à celle du "Supplément au voyage de Bougainville" de Diderot. "Beaucoup de précautions pour faire passer cette histoire qui touche à des tabous. Elle n'en fut pas moins interdite dès sa parution. L'ancien sauvage a eu plusieurs contacts pénibles avec les peuples "civilisés", il a alors pour un temps vécu dans l'heureux état de nature - dans l'inceste - avec son père, sa sœur et un domestique. Mais un Européen qu'ils ont sauvé des mains des Espagnols a détruit l'idylle..." (Hartig & Soboul, 'Utopies', p. 59). H. Coulet ("Le roman jusqu'à la Révolution") voit dans cet ouvrage une source du "René" de Chateaubriand. Cette édition qui pourrait être une contrefaçon est rare. WorldCat n’en localise que 4 exemplaires dans le monde dont celui de la BnF. (A. Martin 67.42). Quelques rousseurs et piqûres. Petit accroc au dos. Bon exemplaire, relié à l’époque.
