Osbeck, Peter (Pehr) [TRanslated by John Reinhold Forster]
A Voyage to China and the East Indies. Together with A Voyage to Suratte by Olof Toreen and An Account of the Chinese Husbandry by Captain Charles Gustavus Eckeberg.; to which are added a faunula ad florula sinensis
Horace's Head Fleet Street London: Benjamin White 1771. First English edition. Two volumes 13 engraved plates of which 11 are of plants pp xx 396; 367 35 lacking the half-titles a general age-toning throughout a few very minor marginal tears there is some marginal staining in the second volume which I would not call offensive otherwise this is a very good wide-margined copy uncut and unpressed; bound in a recent full panelled calf blind-stamped raised bands on the spines with a red labels very good. Osbeck 1723 - 1805 was a Swedish explorer naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. In 1750 - 1752 he travelled as chaplain on the ship Prins Carl to Asia where he spent four months studying the flora fauna and people of the Canton region of China. He returned home just in time to contribute more than 600 species of plant to Linnaeus' Species Plantarum published in 1753. Ekeberg 1716 - 1784 was a Swedish physician chemist and explorer. He made several voyages to the East Indies and China as a sea captain. He brought back reports of the tea tree and wrote a number of books. Trained as a pharmacist and chemist Ekeberg started his career as a ship's doctor and became an expert navigator. Between 1742 and 1778 he made ten trips to India and China becoming a captain in 1750 for the Swedish East India Company. He brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Carl Linnaeus with whom he had a close friendship and was honoured by having the genus Ekebergia created. First English edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. Benjamin White Hardcover

Osborn Chase Salmon
The Andean Land South America
Chicago: A.C. McClurg 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes pp. 312; 331 bound in illustrated blue cloth with more than 50 illustrations from photographs and 4 maps 3 folding. Light rubbing to extremities spines toned but fully legible. Internals clean and sound. Bookplate of S. James Tuffree on front free endpaper of each volume. Osborne 1860-1949 was a journalist entrepreneur and ultimately Governor of Michigan. In the Introduction he describes a recent rise in interest in South America: "Even touring agents and travelling people both commerical and otherwise are awakening to the fact that there are other Rivieras that the Patagonian channel rivals the Norse coast and that there is a charm of nature and newness in South America quite equalling in attractiveness the ancient monuments of Egypt. Nowhere are there wilder men than in the Amazon jungles; not even in the Himalayas are there more majestic peaks;.Africa presents no greater range for the botanist or zoologist and is not so accessible. If one seeks rest adventure or the exploitation of new regions he can find all in South America. This volume understakes to tell some things of South America.and to give routes of travel and suggestions as the author found valuable in travelling in South America from Pamana to Patagonia." A.C. "As a surveying expedition, it was eminently successful. . . due to the steam- tenders, which, during the summers of 1850 and 1851, held out new prospects for arctic navigation. The way in which the Pioneer or Intrepid cut through rotten ice, or steamed through the loose pack in a calm, was an object-lesson to the whalers, and led directly to the employment of powerful screw-steamers in the whaling fleet" [DNB]. One of the important Franklin search expedition and dedicated to Lady Franklin, the fine and attractive colored view plates, the appendix nor the map, were not included in the US edition.
