‎Rarissime édition originale de cette relation rédigée à partir des notes du Père Alexandre de Rhodes, de la mission jésuite établie en Perse au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Sommervogel, Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus, V, p. 255; Carayon, Bibliographie historique de la Compagnie de Jésus, 987. Inconnu de Chadenat, Brunet, … Le missionnaire français Alexandre de Rhodes (Avignon, 1591- Perse, 1660) fut admis chez les Jésuites en 1612. Il prêcha l’Evangile dans de nombreux pays tels Goa, Macao, la Cochinchine, le Tonquin… «En 1648, il traversa tout le royaume de Perse, rencontra chemin faisant Le Gouz de La Boullaye, et se rendit par l’Anatolie et l’Arménie à Smyrne, où il mit la voile pour Gênes. Trois années d’un paisible séjour à Rome ne le guérirent pas de la passion des voyages; il alla faire à Paris les préparatifs de sa dernière entreprise, et partir pour la Perse à la tête d’une nouvelle mission. On s’accorde à dire qu’il a donné sur les pays qu’il a parcourus des détails généralement exacts.» (Biographie générale, 41, 104). «La permission du Provincial, Jacques Renault, dit que cette Relation du P. de Rhodes a été dressée par le P. Jacques de Machault». (Sommervogel) Le Père Jacques de Machault (1600–1680) est un littérateur français qui entra chez les Jésuites à 18 ans. Il professait les humanités et la philosophie dans divers collèges jésuites. Il devint recteur à Alençon, à Orléans et à Caen. C’est lui qui composa le présent ouvrage sur les notes prises par Alexandre de Rhodes lors de son séjour en Perse. Séduisant exemplaire conservé dans sa première reliure en vélin de l’époque. Nous n’avons pu localiser aucun exemplaire sur le marché public depuis le début des relevés.‎

‎Le massif du Diois, drainé par la Drôme, est un monde "subtil", une mosaïque de milieux variés qui associe la rigueur alpine et la douceur provençale. L'histoire de ce pays est d'autant plus intéressante qu'il est resté longtemps à l'écart. L'auteur, grand connaisseur du milieu naturel, nous fait aussi découvrir l'occupation humaine à travers les siècles, les activités traditionnelles, les légendes. Il aborde les enjeux actuels de la randonnée, le seul avenir du Diois et qui se développe donc à grands pas tant il est vrai que la recherche de régions authentiques est dans l'air du temps. ‎Small 4to. (14), 646 [but: 648], (10) pp. With engraved title page by Wolfgang Kilian and an engraved folding plan. 19th-century tanned half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine, marbled sides. First edition of "the most influential description of China to appear during the first half of the 17th century" (Hanotiau). Ricci (1552-1610), an Italian Jesuit missionary, arrived in China in 1582. Adopting Chinese dress and learning the language, he succeeded where other missionaries had failed. He served in Nanchang, Nanking, and received permission to establish a missionary post in Beijing in 1610. During these years, he kept a journal which presented the history of Jesuit mission in China from its beginning in 1582 to 1610, the year of his death. This manuscript was translated from the Italian into Latin by Ricci's successor Trigault (1577-1628), who tried to elicit support for the mission in China. Trigault, however, changed many passages of Ricci's journal and augmented it with information based on several Portuguese reports. "The resulting volume contains not only a history of the Jesuit mission but also includes a wealth of information about China in the chapters describing Chinese geography, people, laws, government, religion, learning, commerce and the like" (Hanotiau). - The title-page, engraved by Wolfgang Kilian, gives the title on a cloth hanging in a portico, flanked by the figures of St Francis Xavier and Matteo Ricci, and with a small map of China, Korea, Japan and Formosa, with the Great Wall depicted, at the foot. - With library and de-accession stamps. Engraved title-page trimmed down and mounted on browned leaf; some thumbing on the few first and last pages and some minor foxing thoughout, not affecting the text, otherwise in very good condition. Shelf wear covers slightly grubby contents clean. Extremely scarce especially in this condition. A reprint was issued by Erskine Press in 2003. In August 1914 Shackleton set sail for the South Pole on the Endurance. His Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition was to attempt a trans-continental journey from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. Shackleton was doubtful if enough provisions could be carried by the trans- continental party for the complete journey so his plan called for a second ship to land a team in McMurdo Sound whose task it would be to lay food depots every 60 miles as far south as the Beardmore Glacier. This party on board the Aurora sailed late in the same year. In January 1915 they landed at McMurdo. However after a fearful storm their ship was ripped from its moorings and along with it went most of their supplies. Refusing to give up the men scavenged enough from an earlier expedition and set out to do their work. They trekked across some 2000 miles always convinced that when they completed their task Shackleton would have sufficient supplies for the latter part of his journey. Three men died along the way. It is one of the really notable polar journeys; ten men marooned with none of their own fuel clothes or stores yet by improvisation managing to stock depots for a party that would never arrive. R.W. "During the first half of the nineteenth century artists fanned out across the northeastern United States to find aesthetic inspiration in nature (and historic architecture). Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900) was one of the few who traveled extensively in the South. Through his paintings, illustrated magazine articles, and guidebooks, Richards introduced the natural beauty and distinct characteristics of this region to a national audience. Born in London, his family immigrated to America in 1831, moving first to Hudson, New York, and then to Charleston, South Carolina. Around 1837 they settled in the small town of Penfield, Georgia, the original site of Mercer University, where Richards's father, a Baptist minister, served as a charter trustee. In 1838 the young Richards left for Augusta, where for the next two years he offered lessons in painting and drawing and contributed travelogues about his rambles around Georgia to the Augusta Mirror, a local literary magazine. In 1841, sketchbook in hand, he left Augusta to travel around the South in search of picturesque scenes. In 1844 he settled permanently in New York City, where he gave art lessons from his studio and began taking classes at the National Academy of Design. He subsequently became a full academician and served as the institution's corresponding secretary from 1852 to 1892. Many of the paintings he regularly contributed to academy exhibitions were romantic landscapes of the South. Throughout the 1850s Richards penned numerous articles and books. He supplied illustrated articles based on his travels around the Northeast to Graham's Magazine (Philadelphia) and the Knickerbocker (New York). For the weekly Southern Literary Gazette, published by his brother out of Athens, Georgia, and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (New York), he submitted essays on his travels through the South. Richards enlivened his travelogues with personal anecdotes, legendary stories, tips on lodging, and engravings after his on-site drawings. In1854 a series of engravings after Richards's southern sketches appeared in Romance of American Landscape / American Scenery. In 1857 Richards married Mary E. Anthony, an author of children's stories. Thereafter, Richards concentrated on teaching and painting. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York, a position he held from 1858 to 1860, and taught at New York University from 1867 to 1887.
