ROSS (John)
A Voyage of Discovery, made under the Orders of the Admiralty, in His Majesty's Ships Isabella and Alexander, for the purpose of Exploring Baffin's Bay, and inquiring into the probability of a North-West Passage.
First edition, 4to (280 x 210 mm), [6], xl, 252, cxlivpp., with errata slip, folding engraved chart frontispiece (lightly offset onto title), 2 folding engraved maps, 29 aquatint plates of which 15 are hand-coloured (some folding), 3 large folding engraved meteorological registers, with an appendix of scientific observations and reports, some offsetting, cont. half calf, marbled boards, five raised bands, five compartments with triple gilt filet borders, the sixth with leather label lettered in gilt, marbled edges, a very handsome copy. "A famous, even notorious, voyage, led by Captain John Ross. As his lieutenants, Ross had aboard William Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine, all of future fame as explorers. Ross attempted to proceed westward through Lancaster Sound, but being deceived, presumably by a mirage, he described the passage as barred by a range of mountains, which he named the Croker Mountains, despite the disbelief of his colleagues. On returning to England in November, the report was, at first, accepted as conclusive, and Ross was promoted to post rank in December, 1818. In the following year he published this volume. A controversy soon arose which called Ross's courage into question and opened a life-long quarrel between him and Sir John Barrow, Secretary of the Admiralty".?Hill. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Colonel Ernest William Greg (1862?1934) to front paste-down. Abbey Travel, 634; Hill, 1488; Lande, 1425.

A Voyage of Discovery made under the orders of the Admiralty in His Majesty's Ships Isabella and Alexander for the purpose of exploring Baffin's Bay and inquiring into the probability of a North-West Passage

Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown London 1819. Second Edition. Hardcover Original Cloth. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 2nd edition; Printed by Strahan and Spottiswoode For Longman Hurst Rees Orme And Brown 1819. Published first in a single quarto volume this work was reissued in a second edition of two octavo volumes the same year. Based on auction records the second edition seems the more uncommon of the two though the original remains the more desirable edition and includes aquatints and fold-outs not present in the edition offered here. Ex Libri; Nottingham Subscription Library Library bindings and bookplates pages have been trimmed. Folding plate has a closed repaired tear pages wrinkled and some spotting but overall good condition. Vol I lxix 265pages Vol II 2 258pages 2 plates1 folding 1 full page diagram. Second Edition of this famous voyage which marked the resurgence of British interest in the search for the north-west passage and inaugurated the great arctic explorations and discoveries of the nineteenth century. Among Ross's officers on the voyage were William Edward Parry James Clark Ross and Edward Sabine. Setting out in April of 1818 the expedition rediscovered Baffin Bay and its three Sounds Smith Jones and Lancaster thereby vindicating the reports made by William Baffin in 1616. Sailing some distance into Lancaster Sound Ross sited a mirage which he believed to be a range of mountains blocking further passage. These he named the Croker Mountains in honour of the first secretary of the Admiralty J.W.Croker. On his return to England Ross's report was initially accepted as conclusive and he was promoted to Captain but his contention that Lancaster Sound was landlocked was disputed by other members of the crew notably by his second-in-command William Edward Parry. Parry's view was supported by Sir John Barrow second secretary of the Admiralty with whom Ross was to carry on a life-long quarrel as a result. NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829 1830 1831 1832 1833. Including the Reports of Commander now Captain James Clark Ross.

A.W. Webster 1835. First Edition. Hardcover rebound in cloth. Good/No Dust Jacket. NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829 1830 1831 1832 1833. Including the Reports of Commander now Captain James Clark Ross and The Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. 1st Edition. xxxiii 1 740pp iilustrated with 31 plates including 6 maps and charts some outlined in colour and 2 folding 24 views some hand coloured. Rebound in blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound it took him a decade to source private backing he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wecked on North Somerset Island. For three consecutive winters Ross and his men were stuck in ice but used the time wisely to learn mapping hunting sewing transportation and language from the local inuit. Ross also organized lectures lessons and scientific inquiries one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832 Ross finally abandoned the ship and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. A whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833 and remarkably it was the same vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381.Browning foxing and marking to plates especially to the frontispiece and title pages damp staining to some pages the frontispiece and title page have been strengthened when the book was rebound. Part of Comparative chart missing interestingly many of the plates are duplicated so some are in monotone and colour. Very large folding map fragile with small tear but complete. Some old minor worm damage to margins mainly to Addenda and the odd plate. Overall in Good Condition. This work was issued with or without an appendix volume of scientific reports; it is not present here. PLEASE NOTE: This book will incur extra postage and insurance charges.
