Damp staining throughout tops of some pages worn away damaged but contents all still readable and clear. Hardly surprising considering the age. .Scheffer 1621-1679 Swedish philologist and archaeologist was appointed professor at Uppsala University in 1647 where he undertook important archaeological research and translations of classical texts some of which were illustrated with woodcuts after his designs. The present work translated by Anton Cremer was originally published as 'Lapponia' in Frankfurt in 1673 and is Scheffer's best-known publication. In addition to a general description of Lapland it includes observations on Lapp shamanism with illustrations of shamanic drums and details of Lapp language hunting national dress trade Lapp houses and other ethnographic material. Headpieces, joints, and corners scraped. A very good, fresh copy. An important essay on the origins of the peoples of the American continent (North and South). The author uses several approaches to produce a powerful comparative study of languages (most notably those of the islands of South-East Asia, Mexico and Peru), dress and traditions. Scherer's conclusion, notably relying on Classical literature and various accounts of voyages, is that the people of the Americas had several different migratory origins, including Chinese, African and Asian tribes. North America, and especially Alaska, received several waves of migration from the Bering Strait, via Kamchatka, and from Asia. L'auteur adopte plusieurs méthodes pour parvenir à son but : une étude comparative poussée des langues (notamment des îles du Sud-Est asiatique, du Mexique, du Pérou...), des coutumes et des traditions. Scherer en vient à conclure, notamment en se servant de la littérature antique et de divers voyages, que les populations de l'Amérique ont plusieurs origines migratoires : chinois, africaine et de tribus asiatiques. L'Amérique du Nord, et notamment l'Alaska aurait subi plusieurs flux migratoires par le détroit de Béring, via le Kamtchatka, en provenance de l'Asie.

Auch als Bd. 15 der Reihe "Schütz's Allgemeine Erdkunde", hier aber ohne den Reihentitel. - Der sächsische Statistiker und Geodät W. E. A. v. Schlieben (1780-1839) unterrichtete als Offizier seit 1800 Militärwissenschaften. "1800-07 beteiligte er sich an einer geodätischen Gradmessung Thüringens, trat als Oberlandfeldmesser in den sächsischen Verwaltungsdienst ein und wurde 1815 Direktor der Kameralvermessung, 1823 königlicher Kammerrat und Oberaufseher der Zivilplankammer. Schlieben gründete 1831 den sächsischen statistischen Verein" (DBE). - Titel mit verblaßtem ungar. Bibliotheksstempel. Die Tafeln zeigen u. a. Ansichten von Kynast im Riesengebirge, der Deutschordenskirche zu Marienburg, Stubbenkammer auf Rügen sowie Koblenz und Ehrenbreitstein. Vgl. Engelmann 35 (EA 1830).
