‎Die Deutschen Alpen. Ein Handbuch für Reisende durch Tyrol, Oesterreich, Steyermark, Illyrien, Oberbayern und die anstoßenden Gebiete. Jena, Friedrich Frommann, 1845-1847.‎

‎5 Teile in 2 Bdn. XX, 296 SS. IV, 284 SS. IV, 353, (1) SS. IV, 279, (1) SS. IV, 287, (1) SS. Marmorierte Halblederbände der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückentitel. Dreiseitiger marmorierter Farbschnitt. 8vo. Erste Ausgabe. Dreyer 35. NDB XXII, 587.‎

‎The scarce first edition of the first French translation of the first extensive work on Lapland and the Lapps. This highly important work by Johannes Schefferus - Skyttean professor of Eloquence and Government at Uppsala University and one of the most important humanists in Sweden at that time - originally appeared in Latin, in 1673, and was soon translated into French, English, German, and Dutch. It constitutes one of the earliest works on the Saami and is considered a basic source of information on Saami religion and beliefs. Scheffer had been commissioned by the King of Sweden to undertake a study of the Saami, primarily because rumors circulated widely in Europe about the heathen traditions and magic allegedly flourishing among the Lapps. The rumors were based uopn unserious and unfounded studies that the Swedish sought to correct. Schefferbased his work on both his own experiences among the Saami and the extensive collections of manuscripts and artifacts at Upsalla.‎

‎Recherches historiques et geographiques sur le Nouveau-Monde‎

‎- Chez Brunet, à Paris 1777, in-8 (12,5x20,2cm), xii (2f.) 352pp., relié. - SCHERER Jean-Louis Recherches historiques et geographiques sur le Nouveau-Monde Chez Brunet, Paris 1777, in-8 (12,5 x 20,2 cm), xii (2 f.) 352 pp., contemporary sheep The rare first edition with eight illustrations (Chinese coins and medals, Buddha) and a large folding map of Siberia and the river Lena. Contemporary marbled sheep, spine in compartments, roulette to head and foot, brown morocco title-piece. Triple fillet frame. Small lack at head. Wormhole to foot of upper joint, two corners rubbed. Headpieces, joints, and corners scraped. A very good, fresh copy. An important essay on the origins of the peoples of the American continent (North and South). The author uses several approaches to produce a powerful comparative study of languages (most notably those of the islands of South-East Asia, Mexico and Peru), dress and traditions. Scherer's conclusion, notably relying on Classical literature and various accounts of voyages, is that the people of the Americas had several different migratory origins, including Chinese, African and Asian tribes. North America, and especially Alaska, received several waves of migration from the Bering Strait, via Kamchatka, and from Asia.
