‎209 x 124 x 6 mm, bronze, signature à l'avers: "A. SOUZE", inscription au revers: "2-1/2" - In-8° (263 x 178 mm), 416 pp. et [4] ff. de planches sous serpente de papier rose, percaline verte, dos lisse orné d'une plaque, encadrement à froid sur les plats avec une plaque différente au centre de chacun des plats, tranches mouchetées (reliure éditeur de l'époque). Les premiers graveurs de plaques dont les noms nous soient parvenus furent Haarhaus et Lieberrhe qui exercèrent à Paris durant le second quart du XIXe siècle. Mais c'est Auguste Souze, ancien élève du renommé Tambon, dessinateur habile et graveur émérite, qui fut sans aucun doute le plus célèbre. Lesné nous dit : « la gravure des fers à dorer est un genre tout particulier, il tient plus de la gravure en bois que de celle en taille-douce. Peu de graveurs réussissent à graver ce genre [...] ». La gravure s'effectue au burin dans le bronze, on n'en voit parfaitement les traces ici au fond des tailles de cette plaque à gaufrer et donc à dorer (l'inverse étant impossible compte tenu de la profondeur insuffisante de la taille). Nous ne sommes pas en présence d'une simple plaque géométrique et symétrique (du type « cathédrale » par exemple), mais d'un long et complexe travail de composition artistique destiné ici, qui plus est, à orner un plat supérieur. Comme le chantait Lesné : « C'est en vain chaque jour qu'on vient les fatiguer / pour avoir de leurs fers, comme par préférence, / il faut leur demander cinq ou six mois d'avance » et selon E. Bosquet, « la composition du dessin et la gravure de la plaque constituaient la plus grosse dépense pour la reliure commerciale ». Cependant ces plaques alors nombreuses n'étaient que des outils que l'on faisait fondre quand elles étaient démodées. Il y a 30 ans, M. Ardant n'avait conservé de cette époque que quelques plaques et fers pour les livres religieux, la plupart signés Longien. Mame a été sinistré en 1940. Lenègre a changé de production dès la fin du XIXe siècle. Il n'y a qu'Engel qui conservait encore un fonds important qui fut dispersé et fondu en 1968 1. Ces plaques sont donc devenues fort rares de nos jours et d'une insigne rareté lorsqu'il s'agit de plaques d'un telle ancienneté et d'une telle qualité. On ne connaît que très peu de reliures et cartonnages de la maison d'édition Mégard alors qu'elle fut à l'époque l'imprimerie « la plus importante de Rouen ». Nous connaissons 4 décors ornant cet ouvrage tiré à 3000 ex., dont 2 sur percaline incluant celui « de luxe » issu de cette plaque. Auguste Souze, fut le plus fameux dessinateur et graveur de plaques à dorer et à gaufrer de sa génération. Il fut l'inventeur de la technique à plaques multiples amenant la polychromie au décor des cartonnages. Apprenti, ouvrier graveur puis contremaître chez Tambon, il installe son atelier vers 1855 à Paris s'établissant successivement rue Jean-de-Beauvais, 20 rue de l'École-de-Médecine de 1860 à 1867 puis 79 rue du Cherche-Midi (1891). Il Employait 25 ouvriers juste avant de cesser son activité en 1892 qui sera continuée brièvement par son fils, puis par son brillant neveu Guillaume dit Paul Souze, et enfin par les fils et le petit-fils de ce dernier dont l'activité s'éteindra en 1981.‎

‎EXTENSIVELY ANNOTATED AND PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED PHOTOGRAPHIC SCRAPBOOK OF BIGOTED AMERICANS TRAVELING IN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA‎

‎Various locations in Latin America 1938. 100pp. containing 230 photographs as well as postcards maps dozens of menus greeting cards and other travel ephemera. Thick folio. Contemporary brown paper-covered cloth string-tied. Boards lightly scuffed and worn. Some leaves loose moderate edge wear and chipping. Photographs clean and nice annotations highly legible. Good plus. An illuminating and entertaining illustrated scrapbook documenting the travels of six friends on a trip to Mexico Panama and various points in South America including Colombia Peru Chile Argentina and Brazil in 1938. One of the opening leaves has four photographs of the travellers comprised of two elderly couples and two single women captioned "Rogues to the Pampas!" Throughout the album there are numerous photographs both vernacular and professional a great many capturing locals in native dress as well as images of scenery and the city streets. The photographs are accompanied by colorful descriptive annotations. <br> <br> The voyage began January 20 1938 aboard the Japanese NYK Liner S.S. Bokuyo Maru. There are numerous menus and other ephemera from the ship as well as a photograph of the Japanese crew signed by the ship's officers. The first photographs depict Manzanillo Mexico a week later with captions such as "Worst city we ever saw says the man from Capetown South Africa who has been around the world" and "Sid Thompson says 'I bet if these Mexicans had a good hot bath they'd find a suit of underwear they didn't know they had!" They picture a "peddler of hats and drink" and a "man carrying load on his head" in the streets of Manzanillo. They then take a train to Colima Mexico on which a passenger is noted to say "Jesus Christ you'd think they never saw an American before" and where they eat papaya for the first time. In Panama on February 3 they see "a native with an iguana in each hand - we also saw our first sloth and a land crab" and they witnessed "a negro funeral." <br> <br> On February 5 the travellers stop at Buenaventura Colombia where they experienced an earthquake and their first sight of the Andes along with a "strong acrid wet odor that pervades atmosphere everywhere." There are several photographs of the city and the locals including one of "natives" fishing accompanied by significant commentary on the locals: <br> <br> "The natives have plenty of fish which they catch in nets thrown by hand - plenty of bananas and fruits and cocoanuts and will not work enough to buy anything but a little clothing rice and coffee. There are no public schools in Colombia - a few religious schools inland. All education for boys and girls of better class is in U.S. or Europe. U.S. buys 85% of Colombia's coffee. Population 80% negroes on coast. Government is unstable foreign capital will not make very much of an investment here but Standard Oil Co. has a $52000000 pipeline in Colombia. Malaria is the greatest plague here though typhoid is also guarded against in fruits and vegetables. Buenaventura is wholly tropical." <br> <br> The group then proceeds to Lime Peru where they arrive "in a dense fog - worst in 10 years." They take numerous snapshots of various cultural sights around the city images of "guano birds" along the shoreline and a "Typical Peruvian Indian of the High Andean Plateaus." They stayed three nights at the Hotel Bolivar before proceeding to Cuzco Tacua and Mollendo which they describe as "a dirty town." Still they took several photographs here including "Descendants of the Incas at Cuzco" an "Indian woman riding Burro - typical scene" in Tacua and other street scenes. <br> <br> Chile was next for the group. They were in Santiago by February 23 and shot several images at a street market such as a soap dealer the flower market a corn stand and other scenes. Shortly thereafter they traveled to Valparaiso Puerto Varas Puerto Montt and other Chilean locations. They captured the port of Valparaiso the Three Brothers at Chilean Lakes scenes in the Chilean mountains Lake Llanquihue and include in the album a professional real photo postcard captioned "Typical Araucanian Indian Hut" among other images. <br> <br> The travellers then moved on to Argentina. They describe Buenos Aires as "the most beautiful city in South America so far as the city itself is concerned." Their time in the city is illustrated exclusively with postcards but they include a plethora of descriptive text for numerous monuments landmarks harbor scenes gardens and other sites. <br> <br> During their time in Brazil the travellers document coffee production cattle and other agricultural settings as well as cities and architectural features. These include numerous images of Rio de Janeiro which "no picture however beautiful can portray with any accuracy the beauty of Rio." On March 30 the group heads "from Buenos Aires down the muddy Rio de la Plata" towards the Amazon River. Here they include real photo postcards of "Typical Indians of the Amazon" an "Amazon Indian Hut" and "More Indians - These are some of the most primitive people living." Among the images taken on the streets of Brazil is one showing a black woman walking with a bundle on her head which is captioned "N asterisks ours mammy in pink dress and head load - and was she furious when I took her picture! If looks could kill I'd be buried in Brazil." <br> <br> The group rejoined their cruise in Brazil boarding the Rio de Janeiro Maru and finished their journey at the end of April. ‎First French translation (published simultaneously a two-volume 4to-edition with identical plates) of Sparrman’s celebrated travel account, described as the “most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it” (Mendelssohn II, 414-15) published in the eighteenth century. The work ranks among the most important investigations of South African fauna in the latter half of the 1700s and is a cornerstone of Enlightenment travel and natural history literature. Sparrman (1748–1820), a Swedish naturalist and pupil of Linnaeus, sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a position as tutor. When James Cook arrived later that year at the outset of his second voyage, Sparrman joined the expedition as assistant naturalist to Johann Reinhold and Georg Forster. Following the circumnavigation, he returned to Cape Town in July 1775, where he practised medicine to finance further travels into the South African interior. His narrative combines first-hand ethnographic observations - particularly of the Khoikhoi and Xhosa peoples - with detailed zoological and botanical descriptions, substantially advancing European knowledge of the region’s natural history. ‎- Chez Buisson, A Paris 1787, in 8 (12x20cm), iii-xxxi, 389pp. (1) et 366, (1) et (iv), 366, (5), 3 volumes reliés. - Edition originale française publiée simultanément avec l'édition in 4, chez le même éditeur. Elle est illustrée d'un frontispice replié, d'une grande carte dépliante du Cap et de 15 planches dont certaines dépliantes. Reliure en pleine Basane brune racinée d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné au bouquet de blé. Pièce de titre de veau havane, pièces de tomaison de veau vert. Roulette d'encadrement sur les plats. Petits accrocs en tête du tome 1, avec le mors supérieur en tête ouvert. Accrocs avec manques en queue du tome 2. Rousseurs sur pages de garde et faux-titres. Quelques pales rousseurs éparses dans les volumes. Bel exemplaire. Naturaliste suédois, Sparrman fut désigné comme scientifique d'un voyage au Cap et reçut l'appui de Linné. Il s'y rendit en 1772. Le capitaine Cook, qui faisait escale au Cap, lui proposa de se joindre à lui pour son voyage autour du monde, qu'il entreprit par l'est. Il ne rentra au Cap que trois années plus tard, en 1775. Là, tout en exerçant la médecine et la chirurgie, il étudia la faune et la flore, poussa plusieurs expéditions dans l'intérieur de l'Afrique, tout en amassant une formidable collection naturaliste qu'il rapporta dans son pays à la fin de l'année 1776. L'ensemble est très riche en description et la plume de Sparrman est simple et claire, sans affeterie. La circumnavigation occupe les 2/3 du volume 1. Le reste étant dévolu à l'Afrique et au Cap, aux nombreuses observations naturalistes, aux populations et à leurs moeurs, mais également à la façon dont les européens vivent en ces contrées (hollandais, allemands...).
