‎Sneyd Kynnersley, Thomas Alfred.‎

‎Log of H.M.S. Cumberland [commanded by] Captain J. B. Dickson bearing the flag of Rear Admiral Provo W. P. Wallis[,] kept by T. A. Sneyd Kynnersley midshipman, commencing 5th April 1857, ending 30th April 1858. [In the Atlantic, along the European, African and especially the South American coasts, 1857-1860].‎

‎Small folio (320 x 205 mm). With: (2) The same. Log of H.M.S. Siren. 16 guns[,] commanded from May 1st to May 8th 1858 by Captain J.H. Selwyn, from May 9th 1858 to [27th July 1858] by Com[ande]r G.M. Balfour, kept by T. A. Sneyd Kynnersley naval cadet & midshipman, acting mate & acting lieut[enan]t commencing May 1st 1858, ending April 11th 1860. (3) The same. Journal of T. A. Sneyd Kynnersley acting mate H.M.S. Siren, 16 [guns], commencing July 28 1858, ending [11 April 1860]. (215) pp. (including 5 blanks); (117 blank pp.). Three English manuscript ships' logs written in a single album during the voyages, in black ink on laid paper with a blue cast, with 3 hand-lettered title-pages, the 3rd with the title in a drawn and coloured loop of rope and all three with drop-shadowed sans-serif capitals, the first two with the drop-shadow in colour, 2 sea charts showing the routes and 8 colour views (in watercolour, coloured pencil and sepia and black ink, mostly ships on the South American coast, but also camps) are drawn on 9 separate leaves (7 mounted in the album and 2 loosely inserted, probably all by Sneyd-Kynnersley and 4 signed by him, with one sea chart on the back of a loosely inserted view), and 6 sea charts showing the routes and about 15 views drawn directly on the album leaves, mostly in black ink, but including a colour plan of one of the ships.Contemporary black half sheepskin, sewn on 3 green vellum tapes, with a hollow back, shell-marbled sides (small blue shell spots with red veins), the smooth spine gold-tooled with 5 horizontal rolls and the title (apparently made for Sneyd-Kynnersley when he acquired it): "Log / H.M.S. Cumberland / 1857" (with a blank space left for the year of completion). A manuscript log book and journal of voyages to, from and along the coast of South America in the British navy ships Cumberland and Siren, all kept in a single album by the midshipman Thomas Alfred Sneyd Kynnersley (1839-74) in the years 1857 to 1860. The first voyage sailed from Cornwall to Rio de Janeiro, while others sailed along the South American coast, including the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Bahia, Pernambuco, Port and Cape Frio and Bahia de São Marcos. The album includes views from nearly all of these sites, probably all by Sneyd Kynnersly and some signed by him, plus a full-page survey (with coastal profiles) of Atol das Rocas, a volcanic and coral atoll off the coast of Brazil, providing a detailed record of its state 160 years ago. The drawings are excellent, especially when one considers that Sneyd Kynnersley set off on these voyages as a 17-year-old junior officer. - Sneyd Kynnersley was born in Uttoxeter in Staffordshire. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1860 but had to take leave soon after due to illness and settled in New Zealand, where he remained to his death. - All the album leaves, including the paste-downs and three leaves inserted in the regular quires, are made of laid paper with a bluish cast, watermarked: E Towgood / 1856 = Brittania in a crowned triple oval. Sneyd Kynnersley no doubt acquired the album for the purpose of keeping his logs before he set off in 1857. The logs occupy the first 209 pages, with some additional notes on the following 3 rectos. The rest is blank and about 15 leaves at the end have been torn out, no doubt partly to use for other matters, though 3 may have been used to make the 3 inserted leaves. - The bluish paper has some white spots throughout and 1 leaf is tattered at the fore-edge, but the text and drawings are in very good condition. The bookblock has separated from the binding at the inside front hinge and shows minor damage at the head and foot of the spine and along the board edges, and a few small, minor scuffs on the boards, but has survived its voyages in surprisingly good condition. A detailed and well-illustrated set of ships' logs, mostly concerning South America. For the author: A. Hutchison, "Kynnersley, Thomas Alfred Sneyd", in" Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (online); for Admiral Wallis: T. A. Heathcote, The British admirals of the fleet 1734-1995 (2002), pp. 248f.‎

‎Archipel Indonesia, Kingdoms of the Sea‎

‎Hardcover, 208 pages, ENG, 285 x 225 mm, book is New, dustjacket, over 200 illustrations / images in colour of the thousands of islands of Indonesia. ISBN 9789461614292. Indonesia and its more than 17,000 islands are spread out over a surface area equivalent to that of the European Union. As an area of confluences and encounters, the Indonesian archipelago has always been one of the most important crossroads of world trade, where Austronesian ships, Arab dhows, Chinese junks, Iberian caravels, and other ships of the East India Companies berthed long before the container ships and oil tankers of today. The history of this archipelago is that of a multitude of links and connections, where the near and the far intermingle, forced to compete by a ubiquitous maritime world. The sea brings together more than she separates, and the monsoon winds have made this intersection a mandatory stop for merchants, clerics, and foreign diplomats, whose presence has left traces in the myths, monuments, arts, and traditions of contemporary Indonesia. Overlapped, blended, reinterpreted by rich and complex societies, these inflows have forged multiple worlds that the relationship with the sea has finely coloured and chiselled. This publication invites us to discover this world, with the sea as the common thread, and an exceptional collection of major artworks as markers of a history to be discovered and admired.‎

‎- Ex typographia Francisco Martinez, Matriti (Madrid) 1629, petit in-folio (20x29,5cm), (6) 751pp. (100), relié. - SOLÓRZANO PEREIRA Juan de De iusta indiarum occidentalium inquisitione, acquisitione & retentione Ex typographia Francisco Martinez, Matriti (Madrid) 1629, small in-folio (20 x 29,5 cm), (6) 751 pp. (100), contemporary vellum First edition, very rare. A very attractive frontispiece-title by Roberto Cordier showing an altar with allegories of Faith and Religion, the king of Spain with one foot on an Globe supported by Neptune. A second volume was published in 1639 on the government of the West Indies. Contemporary speckled limp vellum. Jansenist spine. Red morocco title-piece. Spine faded with black spots. Small lacks to head and foot of joints. Trace of a yellow dampstain to right-hand corner of last twenty leaves. Letter to Phillip IV of Spain and introductory portions lacking, a total of 11 leaves. In 1618, Juan de Solórzano Pereira wrote the king a petition to make him part of a book project on the West Indies. King Philip IV was seduced by the general idea of legally asserting once and for all the legitimacy of the Spanish possessions in America and financed the first book on justice, but not the second on the forms of government, which appeared in 1639. The author had been a judge in Lima since 1609 by Royal appointment. The Viceroy of Peru appointed him Governor of Huancavelica, a mining outpost of key economic importance to Spain, an office he was to fill during his eighteen years in Peru, as well as Procurator to the Supreme Council of the Indies (Real y supremo consejo de Indias). Pereira developed an extensive and detailed knowledge of Spanish jurisprudence in the West Indies, studied numerous documents, and ended up with a significant wealth of knowledge, especially on the ancient customs of the indigenous peoples. The first part of the book is dedicated to studying the laws that allowed the attachment of the American possessions to the crown of Castille. Here, the focus is the definitive legitimation of the Spanish possessions in America. The author then looks at the question of the Church and its relations with the Spanish crown, as well as laws on government in general, the administration of justice, and finally the laws regulating relations with the indigenous peoples and territories. The importance of Pereira's work is to be found in his relentless effort to find the history and origin of each law. 1680 saw the publication of the famous collection of the laws of the Indies, (the Recopilacion de las leyes des las Indias), but this could not replace the excellent work of Pereira, who spent a long time studying the oldest laws as well as those of the Indies. In fact, all the ancient laws, and their indigenous origins, disappeared from the collection of the laws of the Indies, and Pereira's work would remain key for the history of the West Indies and Spanish Americas.
