The expedition led by Franklin also included George Back and John Richardson both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The desperate retreat soon after making the coast across uncharted territory in a state of starvation left eleven of the twenty strong party dead before the survivors were rescued by native people of the Yellowknife tribe. De 1837 à 1840, il fit imprimer La Svizzera italiana, son ouvrage statistique le plus achevé, dans lequel il voulait présenter "le véritable et réel état du pays" dont le présent ouvrage est une réédition : une somme de connaissance sur le pays à la mi-19è.
