The author [1804-1865] was one of the most important explorers of northeastern South America, and especially of Guiana, where he was commissioned to survey the boundaries of British Guiana and explored the rivers Essequibo, Corentyne, Berbice and Rio Branco, and to Mount Roraima, being the first to reach the source of the Essequibo, and discovered many new species of plants. He reports on the geography, natural history, inhabitants, society, towns, government, climate, etc of the country as well as the resources and current conditions. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1845 for his achievements. This book is the first detailed account of the colony.

Contemporary half calf and marbled paper rather rubbed and a bit worn the spine is dull and the lettering indistinct. A contemporary signature on the first blank page. The first French edition Some library copies mention a plate as well as a map but there is no trace of one ever being present in this copy. Schreiber was a teacher and professor of aesthetics court historian and writer. His works on the Rhine were immensely popular and are often viewed as forerunners of the Baedeker travel guides. 2 Teile in 1 Bd. (2), IX, (1), 292 SS. IV (falsch: VI), 308 SS. Mit 2 Frontispizen in Stahlstich, 2 gefalt. lith. Karten und 1 Falttabelle. Späterer Leinenband mit goldgepr. Rückenschildchen. 8vo. Zweite Ausgabe des berühmten, erstmals 1827 erschienenen Führers für den gesamten Bodenseeraum. Enthält unter anderem auch Schwabs wohl einzige weithin bekannte Ballade, "Der Reiter und der Bodensee". Die aus der Erstausgabe wiederabgedruckten Karten zeigen den Bodensee mit Umgegend sowie das Rheintal von Ragaz und Sargans bis Rheinegg und Bregenz. Die hier neu hinzugekommenen Stiche zeigen die Aussicht vom Konstanzer Dom über die Reichenau sowie eine Ansicht von Friedrichshafen. - Teils etwas gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig.
