Publisher's original brown cloth, gold-blocked on front board and spine, marbled edges. First edition of a work on the Prussian expedition, also called the Eulenburg Expedition (1859-62), to the Far East. The expedition was commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm I and led by Friedrich Eulenburg, and aimed at establishing economic and diplomatic relations with Japan, China and Siam. "With the opening of the Far East to foreign trade, Prussia sought to claim a stake in the region..." (Howgego). In July 1860 a large party arrived in Ceylon, one of the members being the physician Gustav Adolf Spiess (1802-75). Spiess talks about his experiences and the events during his stay in Japan, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Siam, paying a lot of attention to the economic (dis)advantages of the different regions. They managed to ascertain several trade treaties, the one with China happened to be signed two days before the death of the emperor. Spiess gives an idea of the attitudes of the locals towards the Europeans and reversed, as he shows both. The text is illustrated with numerous wood engravings, showing views, costumes, ceremonies, etc. - Binding slightly worn and discoloured. Soc., 1861, (pp 3-51); Notes of a Visit to the Cinchona Forests on the Western slope of the Quiteian Andes, Linn Journal, 1859, (176-192); On the Mountains of Llanganati in the Eastern Cordillera of the Quitonian Andes, offprint (?, or possibly earlier printing, has a few hand corrections) from Royal Geographical Society of London, 1861 (1-21, with folding engraved map, partly colored showing his routes); On the River Purus, a Tributary of the Amazon, no publisher stated, June 13, 1864 (1-13); Notes on the Valleys of Piura and Chira in Northern Peru and on the Cultivation of Cotton Therein, London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1864 (pp 1-81). In addition there is only part of his paper, Report on the Expedition to Procure Seeds and Plants of the Cinchona Succirubra, or Red Bark Tree, London 1861, pages 85-112 only, the rest being removed but pages 104-111 being a note by Spruce on Cinchona Succirubra, Pavon and allied species, dated 1861 and pages 111-112 being a note by Clements R. Markham , respected author who wrote two books on obtaining Cinchona seeds and plants for planting in India to develop a cure for malaria. There is also a paper by Daniel Oliver, 'Descriptions of New Species of Utricularia from South America, 1859 (pp 169-176). Mark Honigsbaum in his book Valverde's Gold, 2004, on the exploration in eastern Ecuador for Incan gold, refers extensively to Spruce's work, especially that on Llanganati Mountains and he reproduced Spruce's map described above in his book but in much reduced size. The manuscript notes in parts of this work may be in Spruce's hand but this is not verified. Spruce was one of the great plant hunters of the Amazon region, collecting over seven thousand botanical specimens, many of which were previously unknown. Spruce was in the Amazon region at the same time as Bates and Wallace, and all three lived on the earnings from specimens sent back to England. In 1860, Spruce collected some 600 cinchona plants and thousands of seeds in Ecuador for raising in India for the production of quinine as a cure for malaria. The Royal Geographical Society elected him an honorary fellow in 1866 for his fine work. The Linnaean Society also made him an associate. Spruce was a great influence on the work of Darwin, Wallace, Richard Schultes and others. The author's 'Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes; being records of travel on the Amazon and its Tributaries, the Trombeta, Rio Negro, Uapes, etc. . to the Orinoco, the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador and the shores of the Pacific during 1849-1864' was published in 1908 after his death, by Alfred Russell Wallace, and remains a classic work of travels in South America and especially Amazonia.

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author, a former Charge d'Affaires of the US to Central America, was the most knowledgeable traveller in the area and gives a detailed description of all aspects of the countries including the political and social but with much on the geography, the towns, the native peoples, etc. The attractive plates include Island of Tigre, Comayagua, Intibucat, Tegucigalpa, River Ulua, Puertos Caballos, Port of La Union, Rio Lempa, Jiboa and volcano of San Vicente, Depilto. This copy has ink signature of Frederick A. Schley on front pastedown and a 1958 pencil signature of subsequent owner Charles E. Trail. Schley was a direct descendent of the first settler at what became Frederick, Maryland, and was a noted lawyer. Trail was also a member of longtime Frederick County family and ran for state senator in 1864. His great grandson was Charles McCurdy Mathias, US senator from Maryland for several terms in the late 20th century.

The author, a former Charge d'Affaires of the US to Central America, was the most knowledgeable traveller in the area and gives a detailed description of all aspects of the countries including the political and social but with much on the geography, the towns, the native peoples, etc. The attractive plates include Island of Tigre, Comayagua, Intibucat, River Ulua, Puertos Caballos, Port of La Union, Rio Lempa, Jiboa, etc. 'He was honored at home and abroad as one of the most distinguished Americanists of the nineteenth century and is perhaps the best single authority on Central America on the period' [DAB]. Contemporary boards with cover of the original printed wrappers pasted on. First German edition of this important monograph on Nicaragua (first published in 1851). The American engineer, archaeologist, diplomat and travel writer E. G. Squier (1821-88) was made U.S. ambassador to the Central American Republics in 1848; as such, he was principally involved with the negotiations to build a canal through the Isthmus of Panama - a plan that was not to be realized until 1906. "Squier not only excavated many antiquities, but also endeavoured to give a complete picture of the physico-geographical as well as social and ethnographcal conditions of the countries he visited" (cf. Written by a pencil. 1 p. Full. Dated 8-12-1957. He describes his travel route to his mother in Marseilles to Spain by train etc. TRAVEL TO MARSEILLES BY SS TARSUS -EXOCHORDA- Autograph letter signed 'Y. Küm'. S / S Tarsus was launched in 1931 by "New York Shipbuilding Co.1" for "American Export linen New York" and was launched under the name SS Exochorda. The ship which has a capacity of 879 passengers is 140 meters long and 19 meters wide. Its water section was 8.3 meters. It had 7200 HP steam turbine machine weighing 9298 Groston. Exochorda previously carrying passengers and cargo was placed under the order of the United States Land Forces as "Harry E. Lee-AP17" as of 27 December 1940. After being used in logistics services during the Second World War it was connected to the Toothshipyard in Baltimore on May 9 1946 and taken out of service. In April 16 1948 after it's purchased by Turkey it was named Tarsus by Turkish politician Kasim Gürlek. <br/> <br/> S. S. Tarsus., 8-12-1957 paperback
