« Il faut laisser grande ouverte la porte de l'immigration en répandant la nouvelle que la colonie regorge d'or... Quelques-uns risquent de se faire dévorer ? La belle affaire ! On ne colonise pas avec des enfants de choeur. » Ainsi s'exprimait le capitaine Maximilien Las Cazas en 1855 dans son rapport au ministre de la Marine et des Colonies. La colonisation du « Caillou » ne se fit pas seulement avec des colons-paysans, mais aussi avec des aventuriers, des missionnaires, des santaliers, des chercheurs d'or, des bagnards, des sucriers, des Chinois, des Malabars, des Polynésiens, des communards... Une population hétérogène se constitua, entre les éléments de laquelle une coexistence précaire s'instaura, apparemment solide tant que parvenaient à la cimenter des intérêts communs, mais dangereusement menacée chaque fois que se trouvait remise en cause, comme en 1878 et en 1917, l'appartenance des terres aux colons. Le boom minier des années 1960 sapa cet équilibre fragile en introduisant dans le territoire des formes de consommation dont furent exclus les indigènes. Parallèlement, une élite canaque, formée à l'école des Blancs, prenait conscience d'une inégalité croissante. Frottements sur les plats, mais bel exemplaire au papier d'une parfaite fraîcheur. Amédé jaubert, orientaliste, fut tout d'abord emmené par Napoléon en Egypte où il servait d'interprète, en 1805 lui fut confié une importante mission diplomatique en Iran où il devait négocier avec le Shah afin d'asseoir la position de la France dans cette région. Durant son voyage, il fut emprisonné par le Pacha de Bayazid et jeté dans une citerne durant trois mois. Contents good and tight missing front free end paper from vol I and rear free end paper from vol III title page to vol I somewhat rubbed and worn some general light finger soiling and light staining. A good plus to very good set of this rare early edition. This work was first published in 1804 in the same four volume format as this set the second edition appeared in 1808 followed by this edition in 1813. Later in 1823 a 2 volume edition was published.
