All edges sprinkled red. First edition, rare. - The first grammar of the Icelandic language, and indeed the first complete grammar of any Scandinavian language. Jonsson's seminal work promotes the wealth and elegance of his native tongue, utterly "insisting on the precedence of Icelandic over the other nordic languages" (Jauman). Composing what is essentially an invitation to study Icelandic, Jonsson systematically applied to his mother tongue the insights he had gained studying other languages including Hebrew, Greek, Latin, English, and German. - Title-page a little stained and spotted, lightly browned throughout. Large tears to a4 and b4 torn, repaired with loss to text. Larger traces of worming to most leaves to circa D1, thereafter diminishing to one or two small holes within text, disappearing entirely from O3 onwards. Signatories include Rear Admiral Jorge A. Fraga also an Antarctic author and Alberto Padilla commanding officer of the San Martin. A rare signed copy of Moneta's account of four winters spent on the South Orkney Islands between 1923 and 1929. To date this remains the only published work on life the South Orkneys. From the private collection of Eric Kenneth Prentice 'Kenn' Back meteorologist who worked with the British Antarctic Survey for nearly 40 years recipient of both the Fuchs Medal and the Polar Medal and a descendent of Sir George Back the Arctic explorer. With Back's bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Kenn Back co-authored the first English translation of this work issued as 'Four Antarctic Years in the South Orkney Islands. An Annotated Translation of Cuatro Anos en las Orcadas del Sur' in 2017. For his research Back assembled a collection of all Spanish editions of this work we also have most of these still in stock. Joseph Kessel pose un éclairage cru et impitoyable sur Hollywood. En 1936, Joseph Kessel débarque aux États-Unis. Hollywood ville mirage, publié en 1937, est le récit de son voyage au sein de l'industrie florissante du cinéma. Malgré les trois quarts de siècle écoulés depuis, nombre d'aspects dépeints par le reporter-romancier n'ont en rien changé. Dans une langue limpide et précise, Joseph Kessel dépeint le lieu comme une cité ouvrière, semblable, malgré son luxe, aux villes minières. Les habitants d'Hollywood, producteurs, techniciens ou stars, sont tous, selon Kessel, des ouvriers ficelés à leur travail par une drogue puissante : le cinéma. Ils en sont tous arrivés " au dernier stade : celui où l'on considère l'intoxication comme un état naturel ". Hollywood fascine et rebute l'auteur qui a pourtant déjà arpenté la moitié de la planète ; il l'appelle le " lieu le plus artificiel de la terre, qui convertit en industrie colossale les visages et les sentiments, qui les débite pour le monde entier comme des conserves ". Tentant de comprendre la société américaine, il croit saisir comment Hollywood parvient à tenir l'Amérique entière sous hypnose : " Le peuple des États-Unis est un peuple qui s'ennuie. " Hollywood s'adresse selon lui aux " déshérités du plaisir, aux damnés de l'ennui ". Kessel ne fait donc pas de quartier. Il pose sur Hollywood un éclairage cru et impitoyable. Les colons - Le pouvoir de la femme Non loin de Samarang, au fond d’un golfe que la mer s’est creusé en face de la petite île de Madura, s’étend une plaine où la végétation puissante des zones tropicales, une végétation de jungles, disparaissait, à l’époque de notre récit, sous les efforts intelligents de quelques colons européens. Ceux-ci avaient choisi ce lieu isolé pour s’y livrer à des cultures qui payèrent au centuple leurs peines et leurs sueurs. Hommes infatigables, anciens marins, dégoûtés de l’Océan, sur lequel quelques-uns d’entre eux avaient navigué plus souvent comme forbans que comme amateurs, ils s’étaient réunis au nombre de cinq, pour défricher, à l’aide d’un travail dont le chant du coq donnait chaque matin le signal, une terre où les eaux vaseuses et croupissantes, sur lesquelles des plantes aux larges feuilles étendaient leur éventail, où une forêt serrée comme les mailles d’un corselet de fer, opposaient aux labeurs des cinq colons des obstacles dont leur infatigable activité et leur santé robuste finirent par triompher.
