A classic travel narrative illustrated with beautiful lithographic plates depicting winter scenes and the general life in the north including how to travel with reindeers. The author is immersed in the mythology of the polar winter and its inhabitants humans as well as animals. The plates captures the feel of the landscape and its people in a quite facinating way. Shelf ware original folding map wrinkled with some closed tear repairs. Contents clean. The primary narrative of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-04. original pictorial cloth. First edition with the binding in Rosove's variant 'a'. This is the scarce official account of the ill-financed Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-1904 that nonetheless made important contributions to the scientific exploration of the Antarctic undertaking the first oceanographic exploration of the Weddell Sea and charting the northern part of the Caird Coast. Rudmose Brown was the expedition botanist Mossman was meteorologist and Pirie was surgeon and geologist: the three collaborated to write this popular narrative which proved to be an 'outstanding account. The text substantiates the important events supplies a look at day-to-day life on the expedition and describes many of the most interesting scientific findings' Rosove. This is the first UK edition. Issued (by subscription). Sixty original parts. Complete. Magazine-format. Large 8vo. 195 x 270 mm. Numerous woodcut illustrations. This set is generally in wonderful condition. A great monument to the variety of lands in the British Victorian Empire. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at 6 pence or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. Title page stamped Evangeli Xhosa Bible School P.O. Kentani Transkei. It seems that the term Kaffir originally a Muslim word for unbeliever was applied to Xhosa people in a particular area of Southern Africa and was not taken to be pejorative to the extent it became later in the 20th century. For instance in the early 20th century South African Kaffir missionary John B Radasi refers to Kaffir Zulu and Fingoe people and languages and does not mention the word Xhosa at all. Cloth. Poor.
