Braithwaite, Sqd Ldr Denys
Target for Tonight: A Pilot's Memoirs of Flying Long-Range Reconnaissance and Pathfinder Missions in World War Two
UK: Pen & Sword 2005 154 crisp pp a whisker under 500g photo sections. The author was born of a prosperous Yorkshire family and joined the Auxiliary Air Force on his eighteenth birthday in 1939. On the occasion of Chamberlain's speech to the British nation on September 3 the situation changed dramatically and from being a 'super weekend club' his squadron was assigned coastal patrol duties. In October he was posted to Peterborough to learn to fly with the regular RAF. There followed a period of convoy protection flying Blenheims and then flying with the meteorological flight based at Bircham Newington on the Norfolk coast. Here he flew a Gloster Gladiator with a flight that had the reputation of 'flying even when the birds wouldn't'. Now a Squadron Leader Braithwaite became acquainted with the legendary de Havilland Mosquito and flew long-range weather reconnaissance flights PAMPA under the control of Coastal Command. Tropical illness cut short his career & he lived to write this marvellous book - review >> It reads like a good novel in the easy fashion it is written and is one of the finest books of this genre I've read so far. Thoroughly entertaining and packed with stories some funny some sad some boys own adventure the author writes in an understated manner that makes it a joy to read. > Book in giftable condition < Pen & Sword hardcover

The Man Who Ate His Boots: The Tragic History of the search for the Northwest Passage
Knopf Publishing Group New York 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. 1st Edition: xvi 441 pages maps b/w pictures. Includes Chronological list of explorations 1818-1880. Shelf wear appears unread. "In The Man Who Ate His Boots Anthony Brandt tells the whole story of the search for the Northwest Passage from its beginnings early in the age of exploration through its development into a British national obsession to the final sordid terrible descent into scurvy starvation and cannibalism. Sir John Franklin is the focus of the book but it covers all the major expeditions and a number of fascinating characters including Franklins extraordinary wife Lady Jane in vivid detail. The Man Who Ate His Boots is a rich and engaging work of narrative history that captures the glory and the folly of this ultimately tragic enterprise." This is the first USA edition.
