‎ÉDITION ORIGINALE de cette somme d'histoire antique, véritable modèle d'historiographie critique pour l'époque. Elle contient 9 PLANCHES dépliantes qui représentent toutes des monuments antiques égyptiens et trois tableaux chronologiques dépliants. Elles ont été gravées sous la direction de Pierre PATTE (1723-1814), architecte, graveur et écrivain d'art français, élève de Boffrand, et qui travailla pour Diderot aux planches de l'Encyclopédie. Antoine-Yves GOGUET (Paris, 1716-1758), érudit et jurisconsulte, s'adonna avec passion à l'étude de l'histoire du droit et entreprit, avec son ami Alexandre FUGÈRE, qui partageait ses goûts, la rédaction de ce REMARQUABLE OUVRAGE, plusieurs fois réédité. C'est un livre plein d'érudition, de recherches, et d'une critique aussi judicieuse que profonde. (Grand Larousse du XIXe, Tome VIII, 1350-1). "Divisé en trois parties, l'ouvrage traite séparément du gouvernement, des arts et métiers, des sciences, du commerce et de la navigation, de l'art militaire, et enfin des mœurs et des usages. L'état de chacun de ces objets à différentes époques est présenté d'une manière complète ; des faits discutés avec autant d'érudition que de bonne foi servent toujours de base aux raisonnements" (Michaud). Cette œuvre qui influença GIBBON fut traduite dans plusieurs langues et eut une grande diffusion au début du XIXème siècle, avant d'être oubliée. Chaque volume contient les sous-titres suivants : 1. Depuis le Déluge jusqu'à la mort de Jacob. - 2. Depuis la mort de Jacob, jusqu'à l'établissement de la royauté chez les Hébreux. - 3.
