Paris.: Panckouke. No date. Ca. 1820. Copper plate engraving uncolored image approximately 29 x 23 inches on sheet size 43 x 27 1/2 inches centerfold as issued. Very good condition: light scattered foxing mainly outside plate area a few tears to upper and lower edge well outside plate area. Publisher's blindstamp at top right. A beautiful engraved map showing the island of Philae with temples and other edifices and its situation in the Nile. This very large finely engraved image is plate 1 from Volume I of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte" which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt 1798-1801. The full title translated into English reads "Description of Egypt or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition uncolored as issued. . Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty May 1885. C.-4385. London: Printed for Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1885 Wrpps Fcap. folio. 42pp. ".some representation might be made to the French Government on the subject of the French press in Egypt. Not only does the tone they adopt render it well-nigh impossible to establish friendly relations between the French and English here but the false news they habitually publish about the Soudan causes great pain and anxiety to the numerous friends and relations of those who are serving in the Soudan". - Sir Evelyn Baring's telegram to the Foreign Office.
