Text in the brochure advises that "the tourist can spend a happy time attending every year the most famous opera and ballet companies and enjoying Sporting clubs which are scattered in all centres"; also "Music-Halls and Cabarets give excellent shows. Tourist map of Egypt. Map title: Communication Map of Arab Republic of Egypt.
Cairo.: Cairo Drafting Office. No date. Ca. mid 1950s. Color map with pictographs 36 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches on sheet size 39 1/4 x 27 1/2 inches folding as issued into color pictorial paper wrappers 8 3/4 x 5 inches. Covers worn with some edge tears; map in very good condition. No date but presume mid 1950s with the establishment of the Arab Republic. The map depicts "Liberation Province" an area west of Cairo. An Egyptian travel website observes: "In the 1950s model villages olive groves and vineyards were planted here to reclaim 25000 hectares of land from the desert a project initially financed by the sale of King Farouk's stamp collection and other valuables." One of the more interesting if not helpful features of the map is the poor registration employed with the color red used to designate roadways and urban centers. The faulty alignment creates numerous topographical curiosities. Scale 1:500000. Index of Towns in lower left of map with an inset map entitled Key Map of the Regions of Egypt and another inset map depicting the course of the Nile to Aswan. . Cairo Drafting Office. unknown

Nightingale Florence
Letters from Egypt: A Journey on the Nile 1849-1850
New York: Grove Press 1988 Florence Nightingale was twenty-nine when she visited Egypt in the winter of 1849-50 with her friends Charles and Selina Bracebridge. A journey to the fabled land of the Arabian Nights was a fantastic adventure at that time and Florence wrote long picturesque letters to her family describing her visit and her views of the country its history and its people. These letters were edited and privately printed by her sister Parthenope in 1854 and were greatly admired by those who read them but they have never before been published. Attractive intelligent and extremely well read Miss Nightingale was one of the earliest women to make such a journey and she researched her subject well. Her letters are a fascinating account of life in a country whose greatest asset its past had only recently been discovered. They are also a valuable record of a way of life that has now vanished. And they are an extraordinary account into the character of a woman who within five years was to become a legend. The brilliant landscapes and unimaginable colors of Egypt also drew artists from all over Europe and Letters from Egypt is illustrated throughout with the glorious paintings and lithographs of David Roberts Theodore Frere Edward Lear and others. 223p. illus.index.
