‎HERAKLEIDES A Portrait Mummy from Roman Egypt‎

‎Very light shelfwear else fine. ; Herakleides was a young man who lived and died in Roman Egypt almost two thousand years ago. This multidisciplinary study of his mummy, which is in the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection and on view at the Getty Villa, highlights the funerary practices and religious beliefs of his world. Through state-of-the-art technology Getty conservators, working with professionals from various other disciplines, sought to determine if the portrait over the mummy's face actually depicted the mummified remains, if precious jewels or amulets were present within the wrappings, and if the age of the mummy could be determined. The investigation was carried out without unwrapping the mummy. The iconographic symbols decorating the red-painted shroud of Herakleides depict gods and goddesses as well as express a desire for an eternal afterlife. Such concepts, popularly associated with ancient Egypt, remained influential into the time of the Roman Empire. The book concludes by comparing the data from the mummy of Herakleides to similarly decorated red-shrouded portrait mummies in collections worldwide; Getty Publications; 112 pages‎

‎CLEOPATRA‎

‎DJ in mylar; Cleopatra was intimately involved in the critical years that saw the Roman Republic transformed into the Roman Empire. How this transition appeared to the Queen of Egypt - and the part she played in it - is the subject of Pat Southern's engrossing new biography. Descended from the first Ptolemy, one of the companions of Alexander the Great, Cleopatra was the last in a long line of Macedonian rulers of Egypt. It was Julius Caesar's involvement in an Alexandrian civil war that led to her being set up as Queen of Egypt. She also had an affair with Caesar, by whom she produced a son Ptolemy Caesar, better known as Caesarion. A good linguist, intelligent and shrewd, she soon proved herself an able administrator - and ruthless when necessary. For two years she was a guest of Caesar's in Rome, but on his assassination she returned to Alexandria - where in turn Mark Antony was to become her geust and lover. Over the years of their acquaintance they produced three children. However, Roman sensibilities were greatly disturbed by the Donations of Alexandria whereby Antony distributed vast areas of the east to Cleopatra and their children, and their behavior allowed Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) to brand the Egyptian Queen as the arch enemy, worse than Hannibal, nearer than the Parthians and powerful because she had access to Antony's legions. ; 160 pages‎

‎LIFE IN EGYPT UNDER ROMAN RULE‎

‎Small dents and tiny tear to front board else book is fine. Small scratches and tears to front panel of DJ. Dustjacket spine is sunned. ; The 25,000 perfectly preserved papyri unearthed from the dry sands of Egypt in the past 100 years yield insights into the life of ancient Egypt that are unequalled for any other ancient civilization. Piecing together the stories and historical information contained in these documents, Naphtali Lewis has written a rich, descriptive social history of Egypt, 30 B. C. To A. D. 285. Replete with stories of individuals--such as Kronion, the 2nd-century farmer whose late life was disrupted by debt, domestic strife, and divorce--this book describes the class structure, means of livelihood, and ways of doing business in Roman Egypt. Here is the fascinating story of how the middle and lower classes lived in the towns and peasant villages, of their religion, their personal affairs, their laws, their allegiances. Lewis explores the Egyptians' growing discontent with Roman rule and the ways they voiced their discontent. In many cases, he lets them speak for themselves, in choice quotes from the papyri. To provide a context for reading Life in Egypt Under Roman Rule, Lewis includes a brief history of Roman-Egyptian relations before occupation as well as notes on the spelling of names and Roman imperial titles. Unique among the histories of the ancient world, this book describes everyday life in Roman-Egypt--and the thoughts and fears of the people who lived there.; 250 pages‎

‎Cotterell, Arthur‎

‎CHARIOT The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine‎

‎Narrating the development and disappearance of the world's first war machine, this book reminds readers that much of the power of ancient empires was two-wheeled and horse-driven. Harnessed to other historians' broad-spectrum research on the causes of the end of the Bronze Age, Cotterell argues that, much like the later introduction of the stirrup, chariot technology dramatically recast battlefield strategy across the ancient world. Egyptians employed chariots as all-purpose fighting machines, while Roman chariots were more ceremonial, and Indian troops used theirs as archery platforms; Chinese engineers developed more efficient harnesses, permitting heavier cars. The author's comparative approach broadens the appeal of what would otherwise seem a narrow topic, but this account nevertheless behaves as a detailed military history. Particularly interesting for such scholarship, the author also discusses the chariot as a vehicle for modern popular culture; it aims to dispel the notion that chariots were simply horse-pulled tanks. Scholarly yet accessible, ; 344 pages‎

‎MUMMIES, DISEASE AND ANCIENT CULTURES‎

‎DJ shows some wear at extremities, front board has cup ring - text is clean and unmarked. Overall in VERY GOOD+ condition; To look upon a mummy is to come face to face with our past. This book presents the story of mummification as a practice worldwide. Mummies have been found on every continent, some deliberately preserved by use of a variety of complex techniques (as with the ancient Egyptians) , others accidentally by dry baking heat, intense cold and ice, or by tanning in peat bogs. By examining these preserved humans, we can get profound insights into the lives, health, culture and deaths of individuals and populations long gone. The first edition of this book was acclaimed as a classic. This readable new edition builds on these foundations, investigating the fantastic new findings in South America, Europe and the Far East. It will be a must-have volume for anyone working in paleopathology and a fascinating read for all those interested in anthropology, archaeology, and the history of medicine. ; 360 pages‎

‎SPOILING THE EGYPTIANS‎

‎Dustjacket has wear but no tears. ; This is the story of the technical, financial and economic colonisation of Egypt by Western Europe between Napoleon's invasion in 1798 and the British occupation in 1882. During this period a country which remained, formally, a province of the Ottoman Empire enjoying a considerable measure of autonomy, in fact fell almost entirely under the control of European foreigners. John Marlowe begins by describing how the French invasion opened up Egypt to Western influences, and how British involvement derived principally from anxiety over communications with India. He goes on to demonstrate how the economic and financial invasion of Egypt which started after the defeat and diminution of Mohamed Ali in 1840 was facilitated by the extraterritorial privileges and immunities conferred on Europeans by the Capitulations; and how this invasion was accelerated and complicated by rivalry and suspicion between the Powers, and was made lethal to Egypt by the folly of her rulers. Under Mohamet Said (1854-63) and Ismail (1853 until his deposition in 1879) the key word in Egyptian affairs was 'loan'. A defenceless country which offered rich prizes to European investors and adventurers was steered into bankruptcy by men governing in a despotic tradition who regarded the country's wealth as their own and whose only remedy for debt was to borrow more. ; 280 pages‎

‎GREAT PYRAMID PROOF OF GOD‎

‎Dustjacket is protected in mylar. DJ is missing a small piece at spine. Bookplates of former owner; According to Riffert, the Great Pyramid was built by the biblical king Enoch, as 'God's Bible in stone'. As such, its measurements and construction are supposed to represent various messages about the nature of god and to prophesy key occurrences in the history of the world. I present a few of the events supposedly foretold (by an arcane and contrived method of taking dates from measurements of the turnings in the internal passageways of the pyramid) : * 4000 BC. The year of man's creation. Any evidence of man before this date must obviously be wrong, as unbiblical. * 2344 BC. The Great Flood. * Saturday October 6, 4 BC. Birth of Christ. * Friday April 7, AD 30. Death of Christ. * AD 1558. Start of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. * 25 January, 1844. Amongst other items, the passing of the Bank Charter Act. * August 2, 1909. Czar of Russia met King Edward and inspected the Great Fleet at Clowes. * December 2, 1924. 'On this date the new English Parliament met for the first time, after the Labour Party Parliament, which resigned, had been in power only 286 days'. You would be entitled to think it a little odd that good King Enoch went to all that trouble to forecast a relatively minor date in British political history, but in Riffert's loopy worldview this is perfectly natural. For Riffert was one of the British-Israelites, who believed that the British were in fact the ten lost tribes of Israel, and hence God's Chosen People. Contents include: Great Pyramid and Modern Thought; World's Greatest Wonder; God's Bible in Stone; Modern Science of the Great Pyramid; Christ and Salvation of the Great Pyramid; Astronomical Timing of Man's Creation; Great Pyramid Versus Evolution; Great Pyramid and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel; What the Great Pyramid Proves etc.. ; 233 pages‎

‎THE POLITICS OF PLUNDER Aitolians and Their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era, 279-217 B. C.‎

‎Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Between 279 and 229 B. C. , the Aitolian koinon, a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece, expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances, the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition, which views them as backward, semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion, synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography, epigraphy, and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political, economic, and social history of the Hellenistic Era, this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories, particularly federalism. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages‎

‎Book has minor rubbing to extremities. ; Aramaic Documents published here for the first time came from an unknown site in Egypt and consist of 13 or 14 more or less complete letters and the fragments of others from the Archives of Arsham, satrap of Egypt in the time of Darius II, and may be dated c. 410 B. C. They deal with the administrative problems confronting the satrap's subordinate officers, and with those arising from the relations of these officers with the native population, especially in the matter of their fiefs; one is concerned with the making of an equestrian statue for the writer, one is a letter of thanks for the safe transport of certain goods for personal use, and one is a safe-conduct for a Persian officer proceeding by way of Syria to Egypt.‎

‎ANGLO-SAXON PERCEPTIONS OF THE ISLAMIC WORLD‎

‎Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Cambridge Studies in Anglo-Saxon England; 1 x 9 x 5.8 Inches; 284 pages; Katherine Scarfe Beckett is concerned with representations of the Islamic world in Anglo-Saxon England. Using a variety of literary, historical and archaeological evidence, Beckett argues that the first perceptions of Arabs, Ismaelites and Saracens were derived from Christian exegesis. These perceptions preconditioned Western expressions of hostility and superiority towards peoples of the Islamic world, and these received ideas prevailed over actual experience.‎

‎ROYAL PERSONS Patriarchal Monarchy and the Feminine Principle‎

‎Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Book has minor shelfwear. ; Inscription on ffep by author. ; 1 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 342 pages; It is the thesis of this book that the birth of the state, usually associated with the emergence of the Greek "polis", can in fact be traced in the foundation myths and practices of the ancient Egyptian monarchy to which the feminine principle is crucial. The central significance of women is demonstrated through exploration of Egyptian, Hittite, Babylonian and other myths, in which we have an account of the creation as a birth struggle. Creation ends with the enthronement of kings and, and although from the beginning there is no doubt that the first monarchies were patriarchal, the processes of empowerment were female. The powers of Hathor and Tiamat, Ishtar and Anath reside in their reproductive capacities, as powers of creativity of which the social power of kings is merely imitative. The form in which the institutional longevity of political office was first expressed was that of "twinning". This notion that the king had two bodies - one his mortal body and one his immortal "other" - can be seen in the concept of Greek "daimon", in the "genius" of the Roman Emperor and the "mystical body" of European Kings. It has its prototype in the pharaoh and his "ka". The "ka" as an imperishable "double" designated the corporate life of all social collectivities in ancient Egypt, the basis perhaps for the "corporation" and its institutional "representative" in Roman Law and early modern political theory. It seems, that the ancient monarchy may have represented a real altenative to the hegemonic male warrior "polis" to which we owe so many of our political institutions, and legitimating myths. The modern welfare state itself, which grew up under the wings of Kings, owes more to the conception of divine bounty dispensed through beneficent monarchs than to the assertive individualism of classical republicanism. ; Signed by Author‎
