The Ugly in Russian Literature: Dostoevsky's Influence on Iurii Mamleev, Liudmila Petrushevskaia, and Tatiana Tolstaia
8vo, br. ed. 219pp. Yurii Mamleev’s “necrophiliac variant” of the Underground is the starting-point for Tigountsova’s “third way” in Russian prose. This is an a-Soviet way (neither pro- nor dissident), connected to the paradox of Russian space – which goes on forever, even though every human being seems cramped and stuck away in corners or prison cells. Tigountsova is good with this parameter. As she notes, “even the metaphysical is cramped.” Mind, house, homeland are analogues of one another. Why do walls constructed to contain space in the mind /house /homeland of Russia and Russian literature so rarely lead to coziness, manageability, efficiency, but instead to demonic possession through crevices and shabby yellow wallpaper? In Tolstaia and Petrushevskaia, this focus on distorted, deprivatized yellow space creates a sense of vulnerability and terror. Full of observations on color and insect symbolism, her study ends with provocative inquiries into Dostoevskian post-modernism as the physically ugly brought about by distortion and juxtaposition of fragments. DESCRIZIONE: New Compton Ed. Vicenza 1975, br. ed. ill. pp. 152 in 8°. Babel' combatté nella Guerra Civile Russa, lavorò per la ?eka come traduttore per il servizio di controspionaggio, nel Gubkom (comitato regionale del partito bolscevico) di Odessa, nell'unità di requisizione viveri, al Narkompros (Commissariato per l'Istruzione), in un istituto tipografico e fu corrispondente di giornali da San Pietroburgo e Tbilisi. Si sposò con Evgenija Gronfejn il 9 agosto 1919, a Odessa. Nel 1920, nel corso della sanguinosa guerra civile, Babel' fu assegnato, come giornalista, alla prima armata a cavallo del Feldmaresciallo Semën Michajlovi? Budënnyj, essendo così testimone diretto della campagna di Polonia che cercava di portare la rivoluzione comunista fuori dalla Russia. L'Armata Rossa penetrò fin quasi a Varsavia ma fu infine respinta nella battaglia di Varsavia del 1920. Babel' scrisse nell'autobiografia: "Soltanto nel 1923 imparai a esprimere i miei pensieri in modo chiaro e non troppo prolisso. Allora ripresi a scrivere." Diversi racconti che vennero successivamente inclusi in L'armata a cavallo (titolo originale: La cavalleria rossa), vennero pubblicati sulla famosa rivista LEF ("???"), di Majakovskij, nel 1924. L'onesta descrizione di Babel' delle brutalità della guerra, lontana dal romanticismo rivoluzionario, gli procurò alcuni nemici potenti, tra cui Budënnyj, ma l'intervento di Gorkij lo aiutò a salvare il libro, che presto venne tradotto in molte lingue. Through his unique and exceptional work on the emblem, logo and corporate identity designs of Koç Holding and various other Koç companies, he has made it possible for the names of these institutions, and by extension Turkey, to be acknowledged by the world of design. Since its founding in 1957, Chermayeff & Geismar has pioneered a transformation in the practice of graphic design. He saves the envelopes received from friends and colleagues, who send him abandoned gloves, discarded candy wrappers and other visual delights to add to those he has picked up on the streets of the world. Since the mid 1950s, Chermayeff has been practicing as a graphic designer, in New York with his partner Tom Geismar. His collages have been exhibited and published in the United States, Europe and Japan.
